Actually, that plane almost did crash. I imagine that the pilot had to think quickly and give hard rudder or it would have hit wing first or he could have buckled the landing gear.
let me guess, Kai Tak International (Hong Kong), yeah anything was possible in that airport, this crosswind is just part of a normal day landing, and therefore that is why it got shut down, not to mention the almost 90* turn pilots had to do to line up with runway in such a short time
I recently had a crosswind landing in Colombo (Sri Lanka) and it was a scary thing to see when looking at the front facing video screen. I thought it was the pilot making a mess of things until I looked into it and found out he was compensating for the crosswind. These guys can really fly.
Stop the vid at 0:08 and you can see the windsock coming into view on the right side. Crosswind is at about 5-10kts. Windsock gets picked by the dissipating wake of the MD11.
So the problem wasn't the crosswind, but an overshoot of the centerline, which was not a rare occasion; the approach did not leave much room for error.
So all in all, this should have been a clear go around. Especially when you realize that you will touch down significantly off centerline.
crosswind landings happen all the time...meh he missed the runway should have gone around thats about it; "any landing you can walk away from is a good landing!"
@zarniize I'm no pilot or aviator, but I'm pretty sure that a crosswind isn't a mistake, haha. It's just a strong wind, part of nature. But I'm also sure that they can be dangerous and either make or break a landing. I assume that landing an aircraft is something that requires 100 percent precision and accuracy; every level of altitude must be planned and executed precisely. I'm sure that a crosswind could really mess that up, not to mention possibly make the plane miss the runway.
@Koeker You're right. If it fly's I like it. I'm just going by my research into all of the incidences that the MD-11 has had it it's relatively short history. Love the way they takeoff.
@DrMongoose12 Until, I have the proof, I won't especially because of the fact your running around looking for a clan for MW2 on the 360, or you have a video of you playing GTAIV, Makes sense I'm not going to lie, I'm 14, and I've never flown an aircraft (It's my dream), even though my Dad works for American :) You don't have to lie about your profession, unless you work in a drain.
@DrMongoose12 dude just cause hes right doesnt mean you have to argue... it was fine... it just want on centerline... he cleaned up his strut movement to the middle so there was no damage and got on the runway centered fine... if you WERE i pilot you would know that landing off the side but ON the runway is normal... just stupid because the FAA and JAA invented something called a go around... do me a favor and get over yourself
@billyfarcetboy any mainstream commericial plane has pretty much the same resistance to crosswind (they need to hand speeds of at least 51ft/s (15.5 m/s) and their ability to handle them is irrelevant of size if your a commercial size aircraft.
Unusual! Usually, at least during my crosswindlandings, the plane reacts much earlier then on the actual moment of the touchdown, so that there´s plenty of time to straighten the plane again before touching down. Normally the heaviest crosswinds are higher up about some 300 ft. I would have guessed this was trickfilmed!
@amatorynumber well not that normal^^ he must have been drunken.... sorry - correction: they must have been drunken... every normal pilot would go around......
@bruchpilot747 Kai tak was a very complicated airport to land at. There is a few videos here of planes landing pretty much the same way. It was a normal landing routine there. L1J2D3 got it right a few comments below. ;-)
Actually, you can see the wind socket and it does not look like there´s strong crosswind. It´s lifted by the wake of the plane. So, I think it´s just a very bad landing.

@cun7us It is an MD11 not a DC-10. If you look carefully, you will notice the wingtips that are found in MD11.

Actually it was a hard crosswind landing. The plane was not on the centerline but the pilot reacted well. It was just fine.
