Smoking hot arrangement from Duke....The grand dame at her best...Brecht's drama...This is the pinnacle of 20th Century culture right here. Thanks for posting, srsly.
I never cared much for this song until I heard -- of all people -- Jimmie Dale Gilmour do a slowed-down version which brought out the sinister side of Mack. Ella's up tempo with the Duke makes it swing, Louis Armstrong adds something special because no mere vocalist can add what Satchmo's horn did. Sinatra made it a Sinatra song and Darrin made it a top-40 type hit.
@Elmo409 "Mere vocalist?" Are you suggesting that Ella Fitzgerald is a "mere" vocalist, or that the human voice, man's FIRST and greatest tuneful instrument is somehow inferior to a horn? Singers can't hit all the notes you can on an instrument, but an instrument can't get words across either. The things Ella did with her voice NO one else could do and they haven't done since, the lady was an improvisational genius of the highest order.
This is undoubtedly the greatest version ever by anyone of this classic. It will never be equalled. Breathtaking performance. Robbie Williams? Are u 'avin' a laff?
From the Cote d'azur. Classic big band crescendo w/ the greatest jazz singer of the all. This gets me moving on the stationary bike at the gym like no other tune.
This is my favorite song of all time, ever, anywhere. I listen to everything from Slipknot to Muse to African djembe players to Yanni to Sinatra to hardcore rap. But this is my #1.
It's originally Mackie Messer and is really neat. But the way she sings it gives it more of a jazzy flair
