this song, was when love was still as pure and clean as fresh linens....i sing this to lull my two little girls to sleep...once upon a time....now they are grown ups...lolaleng
Jack Jones, Andy Williams, Johnny Mathis, Al Martino, Vic Damone - what great singers! Let's bring all of their songs back! This current younger generation is missing out on great vocalists (and true love songs). My Barbra -- I miss you! My Barbra -- I love you for all Eternity! ONCE UPON A TIME WILL COME AGAIN FOR US! THE RISEN AND ETERNAL CHRIST HAS SEEN TO THAT!
Thank you Jack Jones and sirpaopao! To My Heavenly-Resplendent Wife and Eternal Soul mate, Barbra. Barbra Jean "Bonnie Rose" Ragan (June 23, 1967 -- November 21/22, 2010). We first met online on November 15, 2008. Cancer stole you away from me on November 21/22, 2010. In the two years we were together, I experienced TRUE HEAVEN on earth! I miss the Divine beauty of your soul -- of your smile -- of your eyes. I miss you more each day. I love you beyond The Western Star -- beyond Space/Time.
I dedicate this version (and Al Martino's and Vic Damone's) to my VERY loving memory of My Darling of My Life -- My Resplendent Wife, Barbra. My Immortal Beloved Barbra, you had stars in your lovely eyes. Every time I gaze up at the night's sky, I see the beauty of your eyes (and smile). Barbra Darling -- you still hold the only key to my heart-of-hearts. Barbra, I pray it is you, and no mere angel, who comes for me, to take me to Heaven with you. ONCE UPON A TIME WILL COME AGAIN FOR US!
@exasperated78 How can you say Tony Bennett's version is "too schmaltzy"?!? I love it!!! Oh yeah, everyone's titled to their opinion, I guess--Hard to remember in these days of extreme divisions, eh?
Actually, I love both versions--a beautiful song, eh?
brings us back to that man or woman who was so special in our lives.special yet so short of time, maybe that is what makes it so sad and sweet.most things happen and turn out for a reason and we must just move on.
A powerfull well sung version. I believe the emotion of Bobby Darin going through a divorce at the time and losing the love of his life, comes through in his voice , expressions and cadence makes it a better version. The live orchestra plays to his beat. Perfect voice and sound pronunciation is'nt needed when exprssing emotion. just my opinion,,,
I don't know if anyone has reported this but the song came from the short run 1962 musical All American written by Mel Brooks. It is quite well known for the original version by Ray Bolger who was the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz. The Bolger version is worth listening to
Agree on John Gary. I have been a fan of his since the sixties, sadly he is no longer with us. His Once upon a Time has to be the best (although I also like Jack Jones) so also hear his Unchained Melody.
Excellent! His voice surpasses most on all the songs I ever heard him sing! The dribble that passes for singing and music today is pathetic and best and ludicrous at most!
John Gary was probably the greatest crooner that nobody knows. Do yourself a favor and look up his version of this song on YouTube. I guarantee you'll be happy you did.
@migitano1 thank you..i must say he is/was?a very good singer..it's a pity he did not get the same attention and fame deserving of such talent..im a fan now..
John Gary was probably the greatest crooner that nobody knows. Do yourself a favor and look up his version of this song on YouTube. I guarantee you'll be happy you did.
this is so close to a time in my own life...sitting on a hill, beneath a tree and saying nothing but feeling everything all jumbled up and near my heart.....sweeter than we knew we know that now....this song will be around for a long time, as long as young lovers it and feel the sweetness.....
The all time top male singers:Jack Jones, Matt Munro,Frank Sinatra, Steve Lawrence, Ed Ames, Andy Williams and John Gary. On any given day, you could change the order. Obviously Sinatra was the most prolific, but Jack Jones had a ton of great songs. John Gary had the broadest range, especially good in the high register. Ed Ames had the best baritone voice ever.
I love Jack Jones and this song - and probably anything that Jack Jones sings, but give the kid Justin Bieber some time. He might surprise you and a lot of people. He is just a teen phenom right now.
My favorite version of one of the most beautiful songs ever! Jack Jones is one of the greatest of the classy crooners. There are few who could match him today ... possibly Donald Braswell or Michael Buble
Jack Jones, Sinatra, John Gary...they ALL beat, by FAR...anything we have recording today. Of the three...Jack is still around, and if you get a chance to see him live...you will be AMAZED!!!...He FAR surpasses the recordings, or what you can 'hear' on small recorders for youtube...Really.
This is a beautifully melodic song with poignant lyrics that capture how precious life and love are, and how suddenly it can all vanish. Jack Jones and Tony Bennett do good versions, but Frank Sinatra sings this song with surpassing brilliance on his September of My Years album. Sinatra's voice is awesomely powerful and beautiful on Once Upon a Time. More than any other singer he captures the deepest meaning of the lyrics. Sinatra's performance of this song is incomparable and magnificent.
One of the most beautiful songs of all time! So many people have recorded it, but Jack Jones is the best. I thank God I am old enough to remember REAL music. And thank God for YouTube!!
Before you finalize your judgment, please check out the rendition of this song by Frank Sinatra. His was the first version I heard, and (after hearing all of the others) I must say that his version is King of the Hill, Top of the List, A-number One. After hearing it, I'm sure you'll agree. BTW: I'm a HUGE Jack Jones fan.
The Sinatra CD the song is on is called "The September of my Years " and it is truly a classic ! "It was a very good year" is on there too! All the songs on the album are gems.
VICTOR LAUREL, I believe, sung the best rendition of this treasured love song. The sentimentality & the harmony by which it was delivered are unparalleled. The rest of the artists who sang this song too are great!:))
What a fantastic singer. So was Jack Jones's father, Allen Jones.
I just watched a TCM movie with his mother, Irene Hervey. Lovely actress, and a real beauty. Jack got wonderful genes from both parents - looks, talent, and and a great voice.
I once met Jack Jones on Catalina Island back in "81" and what a gentleman he was and is. As I recognized him, he came over an spoke with me for a few minutes and then as he was leaving the restaraunt he knocked on the window outside and waved a good-by.
He is very handsome and down to earth.
Something that I never expected from someone with so much exposure.
Real class!
Jack, wherever you are, you found a place in my heart. May God bless you!
what do i say? can;t find the right word to express the feeling that comes with memories of this song -the moonlit nights in my old barrio where life was so very simple. sigh!
Once upon a time, there were wonderful singers like Jack Jones, Sinatra, Tony Bennett and others. Once upon a time, popular music was so beautifully written and preformed. Now we have only the old recordings to remind us of that time--thankfully they still exist.
Don't give in to the artificially manufactured social time-clock that says "Never comes again". Hang in there. It's just lurking beneath the surface, hibernating. (Just kidding though).
It's pretty nostalgic, captivating, enticing. I love it!!! The video images goes pretty well with the song. Beautiful indeed. Two thumbs up. 50k stars.
