@Granada777 fool that's not god or whatever crying, paul's music has the power to control nature, you did'nt know that? all those natural disasters you hear about is when he writes a riff so good that it instantly cause shit to happen.
Plus it's hard to compare Jame's Labrie's and this dude's vocal style. Considering Cynic uses a vocoder in alot of songs. And Dream Theater has no effects on the vocals.
this was the first song i heard from them and i didnt listen to too much death metal at the time. i think the first thing isaid was "what the fuck is this amazingness?"
Same here dude, hopefully it won't be as disappointing as the first time I saw them. About a year back when I saw them on their tour w/ Meshuggah, whoever the hell did the sound setup for their set completely screwed up. Rob's bass was blaring over-top everything and it was about the only thing I could hear. Couldn't hear any growls, and half the guitar parts weren't coming through. Pretty sure it wasn't their fault though, videos like this are testament to their ability to actually play live.
Heh, was almost disappointing as being in a pseudo crush/mosh pit when Meshuggah was playing their set. I was trying to actually enjoy the music, but I was too preoccupied with trying to keep my head up above the mass of people, and trying to not suffocate.
Mosh pits are great and all, but that's when it's an actual mosh pit, not just a bunch of drunken idiots trying to crowd surf and get to the up to the front of the section.
Agreed. At that particular show, though, I had listened to very little Meshuggah, so it was hard for me to concentrate on it anyway. The moshing was tons of fun regardless.
I dunno. Cynic doesn't really seem that much like a headbanging/moshing kinda band. Maybe that's just me, but I see them kind of more like Dream Theater, where they'd be better off in a place with more seats than open space, so that people could just sit and enjoy/trip balls.
jfac sux bawls anyway, only band i ever saw in my life, where i was like..."Jesus fucking christ....get off teh stage." usually live music ...if played well ..is fun to liten to...for some reason...not them
The thing about Cynic is, you either listen to it and absolutely love it, or you don't listen to it. There's no one who just listens to them and thinks they're ok lol
EXACTLY! I said the same thing to my friend Amanda the other day. Either you love CYNIC or you don't there is no in between. Same thing goes for DREAM THEATER.
@heavymetalgod345 some people like him and some don't, but you can't say he's bad. Just listen to Change of Seasons, he was better in the old days; I still like him personally, but I know alot of people like the older songs he sang on better than the newer stuff.
@mooch666 I haven't listened to much of their old stuff, but I'm sure you're right. He just seems a little dried out now. He's definitely not bad; He can hold pitches perfectly fine. He just can't hold my attention.
@heavymetalgod345 yeah, and if you get the chance to see them live you should. James Labrie is a phenomal live singer; compared to the album songs. I prefer his live performances personally
@mooch666 I hear they're touring with Maiden this summer? So I guess I'll have the chance to see that. Hopefully it'll change my opinion. Concerts usually do.
@heavymetalgod345 It's because of the demos that his vocals are so wiry now, he overdid the death growls; even though they were awesome. Listen to Unorboric Forms Demo and you will know otherwise.
I was indeed talking about Dream Theater. Someone brought it up, so I responded. Thus, my comment starts with "Dream Theater:"
Paul Masvidal is perfect in every way, shape, and form in my mind. Yes, pure musical genius. I love everything he's ever done, and I can't wait for the next Cynic album to come out.
@heavymetalgod345 Yeah, but it was just...detached from the original point, it's like someone asked you what another progressive metal band was called.
@heavymetalgod345 Wait, are you talking about Cynic? Why are you talking about Dream Theater?
The vocalist of Cynic is in the integral (heheh, geddit?) part of the band. He's the prime member of the band. Not to be sycophantic but he is a straight-up musical genius. Sure, his vocoder isn't to everyone's taste, but you can't deny his talent.
@LessthanJake14 I saw them in New York City last Friday, got all of their autographs, and got to talk with Paul for like 5 minutes....real down to Earth guy, he is fucking awesome...I couldn't stop thanking him for reuniting (I was born 9 days before Focus was released...) and he couldn't stop thanking me for coming out to the show haha
Actually that seems to be true about most really progressive metal bands. Take Opeth for an example: I know a lot of people who don't really like them, but almost everyone who does seems to be a fucking fanatic. (I belong to the latter category)
Yes, it seems to appeal to pretty much everyone. For metalheads and Opeth fans it has that melancholic feeling. For musicians it has some interesting composition, like Windowpane for example. For other people it has catchy melodies and it's easy to listen compared to other Opeth albums. Now, I am sure there are people who don't like it though.
I saw Cynic supporting Opeth in Manchester in England (You might not know where Manchester is if I didnt put England) anyway, even though I love Opeth. I mainly went there for Cynic. And tbh Opeth should of been supporting Cynic that gig as they just kicked ass.

Id did, I came a bit. It was that good. Met Paul Masvidal aswell :D got him to sign Traced in air! Opeth ruled aswell. Big fan of them aswell. a band called The Ocean were supporting aswell. They were really good tbh aswell. But that was my first ever like show i been to. And probably the best.
This album is great, but seems almost more prog rock than metal some of the time. i wish they had been just a little heavier, not much, but just a bit
yo recuerdo que esta banda no le gustaba al metalero promedio pero ahora no se. la sofisticacion llevo a la masificacion, yo prefiero Focus pero Traced in air es buenisimo
I still remember buying "Focus" on cassette back in 95'. Everyone I knew hated it, I thought it was amazing. Still do. The new stuff I've heard sounds like the next logical step for them.
And it doesn't matter if you've been a fan from the beginning or just three days ago. The more people that give these guys a listen, the better IMO.
I've listened to their entire discography (which isn't quite big anyway), analyzed and delved deep into their songs. They've got some serious songwriting props and amazing technique, I think it's incredible they can pull in people so quickly. Quite a majestic band.
I was kind of like that, but it was more of a fascination. I started listening in early 2008 and found Focus. After listening to that I was hooked on Cynic.
I heard Integral Birth and was immediately sold. Bought Focus and Traced in Air and dl'd their demos. All their work is amazing. That was with just one song. wtf are you gonna do about it?
Been listening to Traced in Air since it came out non stop - SO awesome - of course Focus ruled too - I lived in South Florida when these guys were just playing straight death metal amazing to see the progression...cheers
You are right divine...unfortunately. These guys deserve way more credit for being so groundbreaking and progressive. Hopefully this album opens them up to some new people.
I think that it's verging on criminal that these guys were made to play on the 3rd Stage- they should've been giving the slot allocated to Nightwish, so that a whole new slew of ppl could discover their unique brand of genius. They also should've had the same turnout as Iron Maiden, were there any justice in this world. Legendary.
traced in air just follows the path of evolution. It´s a great release, maybe not as GROUNDBREAKING as "focus", but it has many interesting new things. Besides, why would you see something bad with beast musicians like them? Have in mind that they left in solitude for 15 years.. it´s a pretty big number. Just imagine all the influences and new ideas that were brought to the making of "traced in air" Personally I really like the new album, it´s a legendary part II of a legendary band.
there is no way cynic have gone mainstream and yes it still has aspects and the style of focus but paul is obviously playing around with different sounds e.g. chords, scales and of course vocoder :P lol even paul himself has sed traced in air is not focus but its still cynic, which it is not like metallica with st. anger lolz it is merely a progression in cynics musical movement and dnt 4get it has been 15 years since focus so thers 15 years of different influences
Traced in Air is a natural progression of Cynic's music style. Yes, it is very different from Focus, but Focus was released in 1993 and now we are in 2008. 15 years, a long time. Many music, many influences, many changes. Portal is more diffrent than Traced in Air. I think is a more mature work but they didn't have left the mainstream.
Dream Theater without James Labrie would´t have achieved the fame that they have now, so shut up and listen to Cynic.

Well, I've been into this band for about 3 days now. And I can say they've replaced my favorite band in that time alone.
I can't wait to see them with Meshuggah and Faceless.

You guys suck. That tour is coming nowhere near me and that pisses me off sooo bad!
disharmoniamundi23 3 years ago
same with me! i'm pissed we get no good bands around here...closest band i went to see was a 3 hour drive to albuquerque for Tool

So? Feel cult. A fan of good music is a fan of good music.
Iron Maiden would lose a hell of a lot of fans if nobody who wasn't around when the first album was released was allowed to enjoy the music.

great song, i just wish they were more into their performances? the bassist is the only one that moves really.

Ye but the music is so complex that it would be hard to concentrate on headbanging and playing well probably

TRACED IN AIR IS AWESOME!!!!

Legendary.

This song gives me the chills, beautiful song.

traced in air just follows the path of evolution.

Actually to all, its an autoharmonizer, its what the TC Helicon device he uses that.

there is no way cynic have gone mainstream and yes it still has aspects and the style of focus but paul is obviously playing around with different sounds e.g. chords, scales and of course vocoder :P lol even paul himself has sed traced in air is not focus but its still cynic, which it is not like metallica with st. anger lolz it is merely a progression in cynics musical movement and dnt 4get it has been 15 years since focus so thers 15 years of different influences
Lewisdennis666 3 years ago
I think so.

I really, really like the new direction Cynic has taken, actually. They've grown up a lot.

Not grown up, you mean evolved.
