Hmmm... actually the process is a bit different in 2d compared to 3d. I wouldn't claim to be an expert on the topic but I can't see anything wrong with going straight to 3d.
If you want to start off lightly I've used Blitz3D before and it was very friendly to work with. Soya3D is also nice but lacks documentation. Blitz3d also handles 2d btw.
Gaining some basic knowledge on vectors can be very beneficial too.
