@posthastey I wouldnt wanna slip on an approach like this. especially because of the length of runway to play with is nil. a slip at the point he aborted on the first landing would have left him floating down the runway which is obviously not favorable here.
Ok, stupid question alert. I am not a pilot so I dont know how it all works but it looks to me like you would have more room for approach coming in from over the water. Why dont they land coming from that direction rather than coming in over that hill?
that windsock was fat and pointing his direction. i think he was too scared to slow down. kudos though for being a smart pilot. the dumbest ones are the one who wouldn't go around in that first try.
of course never fear the go around. in my opinion you should plan for it and land only if your in check. noway 10/10... puddle jumpers like that dont need much space, but landing that far in would be pilot error had anything gone wrong all the arm chair experts would be calling for his head on a plate. you're only looking at the result here if you call it a wise decision to land on that approach. glad he got in safe.
St Barts is imfamous for it's nasty x-winds and unless you have reverse thrust, touch down has to on the 1 st threshold to keep you from braking hard. Not for first timers. okay for addrenalin junkies.
The best thing for this pilot to do is get into open airspace and practice a lot of slow-speed flight: near-stall, turns, etc. This will help him develop the feel for his aircraft at slow-speeds and help develop confidence for landing at this airport.
@inbound1000 every video i see of this airport shows pilots coming in step and fast with a big float. I think the hill in-front gives a visual illusion of the angle of the glide path. I bet the under run is short for the obstacle clearance too. anyhoo if i ever have the opportunity would like to do this one myself, will try to come in not so steep.
THAT MAN STRUGGLING WITH THAT PLANE! I BET HIS AZZ WAS ALL SWEATING AND STUFF.....AND WHEN HE KNEW HE TOUCKED THE GROUND HE SAID TO HIMSELF "AMEN!!" LOL
@stealhty1 Wrong again....safe because he TOGA yes...but smart...no...did you see where he touched down.....um halfway down.....more than half of the usable length. Obviously a beginner.
@cameronwick well ffrom my point of view he dump the first approach, and tryed again ,yes he touch down far away but safe enough to apply brakes and get the plane to an safe stop,he could be an noob but surely he will come back and get better and better approaches
@stealhty1 Yes for sure most ppl wouldnt even TOGA, but i've seen a twin otter land right at about the same spot and run off, and they have fantastic STOL, so just looked sketchy lol
@FSProfissional because if you have to abort your landing you wont run into a mountain. They take off facing the ocean as well. The flight itself gets your adrenaline pumping, especially when you realize if you fly to low you can take out a car.
You can't usually land the other way due to the prevailing wind. I flew in there about 100 times and only landed the other way twice. The pilot did exactly the right thing by doing a go-around if it wasn't looking good.
this is one amazing airport you really have to get it down early to ensure lots of stopping space. Nicely done here.

@offroadram95 You need to land into the wind, so if the winds are favoring that approach, that's the direction you need to land.

touchdown halfway down? i'll stick to my 8000' runway without landing over an obstacle

There is No shame in a go around. Thankfully he realized he was coming in too fast and made the right call.
Bravo21 2 months ago
If he floated any longer he'd require floats to land. 10/10 is he was out of fuel, 5/10 for any other case.

question 1: why runway with mountain on a runway threshhold ?
question 2: why landing there anyways ?

are you sure the first try was an abort?
I think it was a low pass to check out the landing strip. It was a prudent approach.

@MetaView7 you dont simply do a pass at this airport.
