I just turned 20, I know im consided a young'n but I still know how to vibe to some ol school musik.....an hell Young Jeezy killed his version of this "Go Crazy" some of you older cats out there check it an respect #salute
Lemme put you up on something young'un...Curtis Mayfield was younger than Young Jeezy was when he wrote, produced, and arranged this track. We're not talking about making a beat. I'm talking about arranging strings, horns, vocals, and writing the lyrics. That's talent, and you'd be hard pressed to find it nowadays with black artists. That aside, i do like "Go Crazy" a lot. And i love it that you have respect for the elders that made this shit possible. A lot of young kids don't. Props to you.
For you young bloods out there... imagine this song is being sung by a Vet, Viet Nam or WWII who's discovered that the world... the whole world does not hate him merely for the color of his skin. This is the tale this song tells to me. Back here, in the mud and blood he reminices on a much sweeter, more beautiful time... when he took a chance on love...
@TheWorfster You know...that's exactly what i thought of when i first heard this song. The man went to foreign places and discovered that others saw the beauty of black people. I often wonder what the Vietnam Vets were singing in their hooches on long nights in combat zones, and i'm sure this song was one of them.
I think the Impressions don't get enough recognition today as some of the artist of their time because they were too real, too politically black and too spiritual. Which is what we still need today in society and music. Ask yourself, when was the last time you heard this kind of substance on the radio from one of today's artist?
@bigchurchs Well stated. I think Common has a lot of substance to many of his songs... but they don't make the radio much... to your point. Although, I doubt that this song or any of Curtis' songs were played on a widespread basis on the radio other than in "urban" markets or black radio stations.
@bigchurchs I could not have said it better. To me, this is an example of a perfect song: it communicates everything the group is about; what the times are about; and pushes a message. At the same time, it's not preachy. It's easy to sing along to The Impressions' music while feeling a sense of spiritual upliftment no matter what your cultural background is. I think most of today's artists have no idea how to write a song like this. Many artists also have no idea what they stand for.
@spideymayne You are exactly right because they don't stand for anything. they are so conformed to what society wants them to be, and that's air heads trying to get air time.
@bigchurchs Word. The Impressions are the greatest of all the vocal groups and Curtis Mayfield is the greatest black singer/songwriter/producer of his generation. These dudes were so far ahead of their time that even then, a lot of people didn't get it. And the thing is, Curtis was just a kid when he was writing and producing all of this wonderful material. Today's artists simply don't have this type of talent anymore.
@desertdetroiter You are right on the money! I was raised in the 80's during the birth of Hip-Hop and still love some Hip-Hop. However, when I heard his music years after it was released, it touched me. He made music for his generation but it will effect many more souls forever.
But theeeeeeeey don't know yet... that I'm not the averaaage nigguuuh
