Penelope Cruz was hilariously funny in 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona'. She was amazing. She had like 18 minutes of screen time? And she was the highlight in all of these minutes. She was sexy, funny, crazy and neurotic. All in less than 20 minutes. Now that's an achievement in acting. Though I think that her best performance remains 'Volver' where she was nominated for an Academy Award, I'm glad she was honored for VCB as well. :-)
I downloaded and watched VCB about a month ago and thought the movie was boring shit as was everyone in the stupid movie. How anyone could give this woman an award for her work in VCB is beyond me. Nothing in the movie was award worthy.

the funniest performance she gave was in "gothica" where she proposes that traumatized mental patients have a playful look in their eye. the effect was to make it look as if the actress couldn't keep a straight face while saying her lines.
it reminded me of jerry seinfeld's "acting" which to his credit, he nor anyone else ever took seriously.

This is probably the most biased and in denial comment I've ever read, it was Winslet's to lose if she had stayed in supporting, Tomei and Henson were battling it out for the last spot and most people know that it would've gone to Henson, Tomei couldn't keep up with Mickey Rourke, she was just lucky to catch the train and go along for the ride.
Tomei is the one with the least chance to win, it will go to Penelope, if not, it will go to Viola, the other three are fighting for second place.

He's entitled to his own opinion as are you! You thought Penelope was better and he thought Marisa was better! I personally think Marisa deserved to win but I also appreciate that Penelope's performance was great too, as were all the women nominated in that category, it was a close call!

Why exactly does Marisa Tomei deserve to win? For getting naked and giving Mickey Rourke lap dances? She wouldn't have been nominated had Winslet stayed in supporting for The Reader and that is a FACT, Penelope has been winning almost all the critics awards, it is obvious that with Winslet out of the way, she's 100% assured the win.

you can't call something that is your opinion a "FACT"! Have you seen 'The Wrestler' ? Or have you read someone's synopsis of it? I saw the film and saw Marisa portray a very complex character in a very touching and efortless way! And Penelope hasn't been winning most of the Critics awards; she didn't win a Golden globe award, SAG award etc. What has she won except this BAFTA? Marisa Tomei has been nominated as far as I can see in all but the SAG awards! ...

... So to suggest that Marisa wouldn't have been nominated if it wasn't for Kate Winslet being nominated in that category is ridiculous! And let me reiterate again, I thought Penelope's performance was great and I think she is a wonderful actress in general but my OPINION (something you don't seem to grasp) having watched these films is that Marisa's performance was the best out of an incredible bunch! That is my opinion and I'll stick by it!

I saw The Wrestler and aside from one scene where she argues with Mickey Rourke, her role was nothing but her being the cliché of the whore with the heart of gold and please, I could bet money that Marisa Tomei would not have been nominated had Winslet stayed, because the Oscar nominations in acting mirror the SAG ones almost perfectly and I'm sorry to break it to you, but the SAG and the Golden Globe are not critics awards, so do you mind checking your facts before posting? This is probably the most biased and in denial comment I've ever read, it was Winslet's to lose if she had stayed in supporting, Tomei and Henson were battling it out for the last spot and most people know that it would've gone to Henson, Tomei couldn't keep up with Mickey Rourke, she was just lucky to catch the train and go along for the ride.
Tomei is the one with the least chance to win, it will go to Penelope, if not, it will go to Viola, the other three are fighting for second place.

Believe it or not, just because someone wasn't blown away by Tomei's performance in doesn't mean he didn't see the film, it was nothing out of the ordinary, I'm sorry that I'm not blown away by clichés like you, Tomei's just playing the whore with the heart of gold and yes, all she did was dance around naked, minus a couple of scenes, I doubt her screentime with clothes on surpasses her screentime naked, she's just getting nominated for learning how to strip.
