It represents mans journey through life and offers the chance to meditate and contemplate. The general idea is that every visitor walks the maze before entering the church fully and then gazes upwards to take in the splendor. The unique blue colour in the windows was a secret colour commisioned by the then bishop and the secret of which died with the glaziers, even today that colour has never been replicated.
Yes no one has ever been able to replica it I have family in France, two hrs south of Paris L' Orleans. I hope I didn't mess up the spelling if so I tried
Hi....I've been looking for this labyrinth for years. can you tell me what is going on while people walk around it....do you recite hail marys or our fathers at certain points? thank for any info.....
This labyrinth is only open certain hours because rest of the time chairs are over it... and you are free to say whatever prayer or meditations you want while you walk it. No rules, just what is right for you.
well, thanks, I don't know why it looks like so much fun to ne!! I would like to paint one on a concrete lot here in America, just to walk it out!!!! I thought the pilgrims from the 1500's had to do some kind of penance on it before they went in?????? but thanks for the info....maybe I will actually go some day!
To do your own labyrinth use a long long rope and put it in the pattern used by the Chartres
one or your own design (entrance, paths, end!). It is possible to buy a canvas tarp and paint the pattern on (or with black tape) and you can roll it out to use when you want then.
For a perspective into the history of labyrinths including Chartres watch "Researching the Labyrinth"
