  • Laci, you are my hero. I am so glad that I have avoided those books.

  • COULD NOT AGREE MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you for this

  • sado-masochistic

sadistic - pleasure from causing pain

masochistic - pleasure from receiving pain

  • This was stunning! Thank you so much.

  • Vampire Diaries FTW

  • Honestly everyone is reading way to much into this. Its a fictional book...thats it. I doubt young girls ever think too much about it. I dont see why other people are so upset when there have been so many other popular books with the same thing. Examples: Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw Edward Fairfax Rochester and Jane Eyre Edmond Dantes and Mercédès Edmond Dantes and Haydee Batman and Robin Batman and Catwoman Batman and Bruce Wayne Leto and Jessica Paul and Chani I rest my case.
  • @foreverlily1 The difference is that many fans of Twilight become obsessed with Edward and Jacob, thinking they're the perfect type of man, and start desiring a relationship like the one portrayed in the books/movies.

  • @to the people saying that she's taking it too seriously

The thing is, it's not just a book. Young girls are reading this and thinking that what Edward and Bella has is a perfect relationship. They want to be like Bella and they want a boyfriend like Edward. That's truly scary.

  • Read LOTR.

  • I've noticed a trend, I favorite almost all your videos. Love them, keep it up :)

  • ahhh I didn't mind the books although they truly are "trash." They will never be classics. They do not share any characteristics with literary masterpieces. @BandytaCzasu The films: AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This totally blew my mind. I had not thought of it that way at all....

  • OMG!! They.are.not.real.people...... The book was writen for entertainment purposes .. If you decide to read it ...that's you're choice.. Its fiction and in my opinion one of the best books.

  • Admit:you love this film.

  • I was just talking with my mother about this today. But Bella is, in fact, abusive too. She uses guilt, manipulation, and her sexuality to try to exert control over Jacob and, to a lesser extent, Edward. She seems to want to keep Jacob around because she needs a backup plan. When Edward left her, she used Jacob to fill the void and made him believe she might have feelings for him.

I think that if this series were meant to be satirical, it would be absolutely brilliant.

  • how did i miss that while watching the movies? my eyes have been opened thank you laci

  • there are a bunch of crazy girls and women who think edward cullen is the perfect man, and will get foaming- at- the- mouth angry if you try to debate them on this. they are in so much denial it hurts. they make an excuse for everything. "oh, he's just old- fashioned. oh, that's just how he is. oh, he's just trying to protect her." the same excuses come out the mouths of battered women.

  • As I'm watching this, there's a Twilight Ad right beside the video.

  • This blew my fucking mind! I always resented the character Bella for having low self esteem. And thye control that edward had over her. And this made me angery because I saw that she had no self esteem and no control. But I didn't read into it as all of this! But wow I loved this analysis of Twilight. Amazing!

  • PREACH girl! i've hated twilight for years but never been able to fully articulate why like you have done here. subscriiibed

  • Oh my gosh the Edward and Bella are not real people. Stop believing in fairy tales!!!

  • @magnus56j Fairy tales are better than this Twilight bullshit. Just pointing that out.

  • Interesting vid I agree

  • Wow I love you do much!!!!

People don't get that media has such a big impact but it does as a child I would watch really sexual movies at the age of three before I even knew what was happening it slowly changed the way I thought to think really dirty and crazy thinking that's how it was suppose to be just like with porn for boys or princess movies for girls it sends us off into this world think that's what we are suppose to be searching for and with music it's much worse drives me insane!!!! I

  • ffs its a fantasy book get over it,your all thinking wayyyyy to much into it gawwwddd

  • @Runawayzzz Aaaaaand.... you're a Twihard. What else did I expect? You might want to pay attention to what this chic is saying in this video. She's fucking right.

  • @LilySevShipper Twihard? That's a word?!

Makes me want to shower in battery acid as I claw my eyes out...

  • @Cryptiic6 I didn't make it up. Some people can say that word with a completely straight face. It's impressive.

    I feel the same way.

  • @LilySevShipper Oh humanity, what will you come up with next? *Sigh*

  • @Cryptiic6 A very scary question to ask. *Sighs along with*

  • the world has far more obvious and immediate problems than twilight... I liked all your videos, but this one is an exception. People should not be stupid enough to obsess over movies anyway. and always criticize them before and after (if they find it worth seeing)

  • half of it is about saving her from bleeding to death.Jacob is forceful and a jerk to her.Edward seems constipated ect.Haha I don't know what's left.Sounds fun as eating rotten prunes, to me.

  • Yes I agree with everything you said..thank you for pointing that out.I read the books, and liked them, but when I got a little older I saw the movie and didn't really enjoy it.I guess because I was older and over the ''OMG these boys are hot!'' phase. Then I started to see how fucked up the entire relationship really was.I guess you could say ''It's just entertainment.'' But for me..I just don't fine it appealing even as a something just for fun.Edward is no fun,Bella is no fun..

  • I wouldn't exactly say shame on Meyers for writting such a story. Isn't it free speech? Why can't an author write a story about a character accepting an abusive relationship? I know the novels are targeted towards teens but I don't think any author is legally bound to putting out a good message. But I do agree with your analysis. I never saw the book in that light.

  • @adramafanatic but the books aren't marketed or talked about like this in the media. edward isn't seen as abusive, but cute and endearing. bella isn't seen as submissive, but "clumsy" and cute again. edward "has" to overprotect her so much because of her clumsiness (...really?) What's scary is that so many girls WANT to be bella and WANT an edward in their life. It's a bad message wrapped up in a good one, if that makes sense. So people will buy into it. people wouldn't accept a "bad" message.

  • i mean looks....like

  • why i haven't i watch your videos before, think ive seen one or two couple of years ago!

and..i have thought about all of this actually,Girls are twi hard fans and wanna BE a Bella

and.. wanna have a guy who behaves and acts like Edward!

he's not a what you call it "gentleman" imo either.

    not a fan of that!

  • @kungfoolai If you listened in the beginning, she's going in depth because the book focuses on negative relationship traits that people do have problems with in real life, and glamorizes them to make them appear ok. Believe it or not, lots of girls are and even think it's perfectly fine to be like Bella; clingy, irrational, and dependent. It's unhealthy and the sad truth is, it's the fans that take it this seriously.

  • ...I completely disagree with this...you're going to in depth, its only a film thats not ment to be taken this heavily.. just watch/ read it and enjoy..

  • @kungfoolai i could never "enjoy" twilight anymore. it grabs young minds like mine, but it didn't have me for long. the leads are so boring and lifeless. i don't know how this stuff even got famous. i'm about out of my twilight phase and in a year everyone else will be too after that goofy breaking dawn part 2 comes out. everyone will see how stupid it really is and laugh.

  • As usual great points!

  • its just a book/movie you think to much about it im 15 and i dont let boys control me or abuse me and i dont think i need a man to complete me..

  • read Nightshade by Andrea Cremer! its WAY better (I just read the last one so i would know xD )

  • wow...didnt even make the connections lol. btw ur eyes look awesome in this lighting!!!^^

  • Agreed- shame on her.

  • I could never take this book seriously , it has sparkly vampiers enough said

  • I totally disagree on this whole thing.

  • but... i like twilight ive read all the extas tht she wrote for fans and im on my 5th round of the books and it makes me cry in some parts ... wow im a total twihard.....

  • ....just read Harry Potter.

  • I agree with this video on twilight but something more controversial I think true blood promotes many of the same unhealthy stereotypes and relationship patterns, possibly even more so allthough my perspective is skewed since I can't bring myself to read or watch twilight fully. I am also not judging the sookie stackhouse novels, just the series true blood. I feel it's like twilight for teenagers and with more violence,

  • Force the kids to read Romeo and Juliet.

  • What the author said: "The curtains are blue." What the teacher thinks the author meant: "The curtains were a symbol of depression in the characters life." What the author fucking meant: "The curtains are fucking blue!" This is not true in the case of Twilight.

  • THANK YOU. I teach high school English and, at one point, I had a professor get up and say that Twilight is actually a good thing because "at least the kids are reading SOMETHING." I took so much issue with that because she completely denied how problematic the book is. I've had so much issue with the book and I still can't seem to figure out how to grapple with it in the classroom (esp. when I can run the risk of censorship). Regardless, it's nice to hear someone agree with me!

  • Wow. How chilling....very perceptive.

  • You forgot the part where her former love interest falls in love with her daughter.

  • Bella's a fucking idiot. Edward is fucking fucked up and lonely haha.

  • I totally agree with this. Another point to make is that many teenage girls who read these books project themselves onto Bella's character, essentailly becoming her as they read the books and therefore reinforcing these harmful ideas in their minds.

  • well that was a wake up call, i use to like twilight, not anymore. :$

  • you make twilight so depressing lol

  • Laci, what do you think of Elena from The Vampire Diaries?

  • I officially love you <3. Rock on: Shai S. I am happy that someone finally agrees with how I feels aka you lol.

  • the only reason i watch the movies is because when i was reading the books i seemed to have been going through a similar situation with having to fight over two guys and just the recipe for disaster was there. one being jealous, one being protective i care for both of them... etc.

  • I recently wondered why I watch Twilight movies. Am I a masochist? Do I hate myself? Then I realized: Watching the dismal, empty lives of these characters makes my own life seem interesting and fulfilling by comparison. There isn't a single character whose life I could inhabit for more than an hour without eating a bullet. Most movies offer an escape from reality. With twilight movies I am eager to return to reality, which seems oh so sweeter by comparison.

  • I agree, I couldn't read the books. Passive female protagonists make me angry. Women are not weak and hopeless, willing to obey men without questions. why do some writers continue to portray females like this? aren't they females too? The Vampire Academy novels by Richelle Mead are way better, the protagonist is those books is more active and not a push over.

  • Twilight. Written by a moron for morons. Oh and the actress who plays her has no right calling herself an actress. And don't get me started on Rob Pattycake.

  • I don't know... I feel really conflisted right now. I like Twilight (yep, I LIKE it).You made some really good points. But this doesn't change that I see different things in the book than you do. Maybe my opinion will change in a few years but I think about different perspectives and different parts of the book that make it empowering to me.

  • meyer is/was mormon....no? explains a lot

  • Meyer wasnt thinking, the whole series was probably just her sexual fantasies rolled into one.

  • I love what you just said. And to people who think you're reading too much into it, that's what you're supposed to do. It's ok reading/watching it and enjoying it, but without criticism and reading into it's message (what we all do in english literature lessons and film studies for example) nothing is going to progress or improve. So I think it's good that people are analysing it and voicing their opinion, especially when it's one like this, which I feel is important, and also correct.

  • good thing they made the movies or else more chicks would take it to heart....them movies are goofy as hell

  • suck on this twi-freaks

  • Good looking rich guys abusive ... who would have thought ?

  • Get real ... Money & Looks are the MOST desirable attitudes of men.

  • this is so true and we all know the book was written by a mormon, nothing against mormons but how the see life is differantely from how a modern woman sees it.

  • you read to much into things.... please be quiet

  • @RoSeBeRrY49 that is dangerous thinking right there

  • The only thing I do not agree with in this video is that Edward setting the rules on the sexual part of their relationship is not controlling. If a girl said she didn't want to have sex that would be the end of it. Is that controlling? No. If someone, guy or girl, is not comfortable with having sex then their decision needs to be respected or they need to move on and date other people.

  • While I agree that some of the plot points of the series are disturbing, the fact of the matter is that it is a story meant to be ENTERTAINING. Which it is - hence its success. If I had a teenage daughter, I would not forbid her from watching or reading Twilight. I would, however, expect that I had was a good enough parent to raise a girl who does not think that she needs a boyfriend to make her life meaningful, and trust that she will not change that thinking based on a vampire love story...

  • Outstanding commentary!!!

  • Thank God for you! I've been telling people that this story is terrible (and that the menfolk in it are abusive) for ages. I am so glad that there are other people who get it too.

  • Well said, and nice job doing your homework. I'm subscribing. Keep up the great work!

  • In the popular young adult literature genre, "The Hunger Games" provides a much better example of relationships - even though Katniss is somewhat annoyingly irrational at times in her reasoning and decision making regarding the relationships with Peeta and Gale. But there's no harmful controlling or abusive aspects that I remember.

  • The irony of this movie is that while everything said about the abuse and domination is 110 percent true, this is a movie that is made to appeal to young women. If this movie had been made for guys Edward would have chopped up the valtoury, or what ever the bad vampires were called with a samuri sword, and gunned down the werewolves in a hale of silver bullets. The formulas don't change much, but they don't need to. We keep watching and they keep making money.

  • You're a smart cookie Laci. We need more enlightened and critical voices like yours on YouTube.

  • "watch?v=CoA4goulmMo" <-- my vampiress response to Twilight Libertarian Fascist "Atlas Shrugged" vampire fucktardia.

"I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore" (Divinyls)

  • Laci,

    Note:

"Twilight" is an intentional Libertarian Capitalist twisted, actual authentic Fascist re-interpretation of teenage vampire genre, to brainwash teenagers, with individualistic selfishness, misogynistic patriarchal Ultra-Conservative ideology, to reprogram vulnerable teenage women to become demoralized, obedient subservient sexual product of textbook Fascist Capitalistic commercial society, borrowing Ayn Rand Fascist themes as entertainment vehicle to brainwash teenage women.

  • Laci, thanks so much for this vid! ; D

i've been telling people the same things on Twilight, for yrs.

    Laci, please urgently take note:

"Twilight", is a vampire version of Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" and "Fountainhead", with John Galt, an abusive sadistic Fascistic Libertarian Capitalist Right-wing Conservative individualist asshole. John Galt as Edward the vampire.

Ayn Rand's sadistic fantasy of an abusive violent (actual Fascist), psychotic monster John Galt, packaged in vampire wrapping.

  • 1:23

And that is not true... how?

  • JINGLE BELLS

    TWILIGHT SMELLS

    EDWARD RAN AWAY

    JACOB CRIES

    BELLA DIES

    POTTER ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!

  • Harry Potter > Twilight

  • This shit is deep Lol. Doesn't the Werewolf kid end up going out with Bella's daughter?

  • Take a step back to the 80's with the popularity of those Harlequin "Romance" novels. Every female was a virgin. Every male predatory. These books were insanely popular, regardless. I have to wonder why this is. I enjoyed them as well, but only as an older teen .. and while I was living at home with a physically and mentally abusive father.

  • @Trips1103 And these "romance" novels are not still popular? The best selling genre of books is the standard romance novel TO THIS DAY. But I enjoy your point.

  • "Kindof like when someone blames rape on a woman for looking good!" YES! You forgot to discuss the way the books support pedophilia (man to female child) and explicitly display domestic abuse within the relationships of the wolf pack. But I understand you chose to focus on Edward as the definition of the abuser.

  • @miamystery

MelinaPendulum does a great job critizing Twilight. She's 19 and in college, she does book reviews and more. Just type in Twilight to the search bar of her channel.

  • Btw, I'm pretty sure im in love with you.. =|

  • Hmm, your pretty much bang on right here..

But I don't agree with what you said about Jacob..

If you study his character, you'll see that he's totally against the relationship bella has with Edward, and constantly mentions to bella that he hates how he controls her, and that she has a choice..

He never treats her wrong either..

He only kisses her to try and make her see that edward isn't her only option.. Etc..

    Just my views on that..

Meyer ruins it anyway because she ends up with Edward..

  • @Feizaan

Yeah but he 'falls in love' or imprints or whatever on/with a child. A baby, Bella's baby. He's not cool, he's a pedophile.

  • @Feizaan Actually Meyer ruins it because she made him fall in love with a newborn, fresh from the womb of his former love interest. I don't like Twilight but even if the baby will be fully grown at age 5 that's not right and it's not good writing.

  • @Feizaan He was a good character until he fell in love with a baby. I used to like him then he was turned into a pedophile. There is nothing sexy and romantic about a boy falling in love with a baby.

  • For shame on Stephanie Meyer

  • Also the werewolves are a metaphor for physically abusive men. In the second movie you have a scene that shows a woman with a terrible scar, that came from her husband(?) this was forgiven because the idea that he really is a good guy, that simply has a dark side he can't control (his werewolf form) this is exactly the justification people use when staying in a physically abusive relationship.

(note: I admittidly just saw the one scene but the message was clear as day, context be damned)

  • is popular cause most people are dumb

  • You are just attacking the values that have made the Morman Church the great institution that it is today.

  • One girl I know who is a huge fan of these volumes of shit is a child sexual abuse survivor (the piece of shit abusive father STILL LIVES in the home because her worthless as tits on a warthog mother won't kick him out). Great to see that her dependence on the abuser is being fueled by this (she still thinks her cunt father can do no wrong). Sorry for the language but that pisses me off.

  • I haven't even read the damned thing but from your description it sounds like total shit to me. As if most women I knew didn't have shitty enough self-esteem. Now there's a book fueling this idiotic submission? BURN THEM

  • Have you ever heard this quote? --> "If you have two people who you love, choose the second one. Because if you really loved the first, there wouldn't be a second." Thats what I think of when I think of Twilight. Now I don't know much about the books because 700 pages of how some dumb bitch obsesses over some fake ass vampire doesn't quite apeal to me. And if I wanted to watch a bunch of topless guys, I'd watch porn.

  • Aw, Laci... you're awesome.

  • My opinion of Twilight is mixed. Meyer pretty much nails the plot criterion, but there are things that I found disappointing.

    1) Bella accepts Edward back without question. Given how much she resisted him for the first part of Book 1, this seemed out of character. Worse, she actually feels anger at him for attempting suicide.

    2) All that foreshadowing through Book 4, no fight scene at the end. Talk about anticlimax.

    3) Edward is abusive, Bella is submissive, Jacob is pushy. They all suck.

  • this is great! I LOVE twilight, but i've never had my eyes opened to this side of the story.. it makes alot of sense.. i wish i think the way you do! :p

  • ALL twilight fans should see this!

  • Im just going to subscribe your channel thanks to this =) great

  • Meyer's a mormon. Nuff said.

  • Let's just say it's a horrible perversion of literature and leave it at that.

  • Criticize Twilight: Everybody claps.

Criticize Pornography: HOW DARE YOU, ANTISEX PURITANICAL TYRANT SUPPRESSORS.

  • Good point you have

  • i agree completely laci u cud not have said it any better! great job!

  • lol...so this means you actually read the entire series? Poor Laci...

  • The significant thing to keep in mind in the story is that Edward is not human. Bella's relationship is in effect a form of bestiality. Now that we have gotten into the area of more perverse relationships, questions other than the superficial aspects of Bella's behavior come into play. Years of therapy now come into the picture, Bella better have a top ranked health plan.

  • i agree with you lacie, but in twilight the love was always unequal well simply because its a world full of vampires and wearwolfs so the guys kinda some what have to save her a little idk why i would have kicked the shit out of edward and jacob and about charlie she just cooks and cleans for him because she's the only one who can in the house and the sex thing i'm pretty sure he would have killed her if they did it cause her blood and he's a vampire and would have eatten her. idk :)

  • I've been saying this since the series first became popular. Thank you for getting this message out there.

  • I couldn't agree more. Seriously. Way to go, girl!

  • Laci you totally forgot to mention that edward was also 100+ years old and hanging out at a high school. he was 86 when bella was born. if edward was anything other than a vampire that just happens to look 17 every fan would be creeped out.

  • @Avalanche66 I suppose the situation is different when you're an ageless immortal. There are few other girls his age, so what is he to do? obviously, the answer is that he should just kill himself.

  • @Avalanche66

Well, I have to disagree with you on that front. Think about it for a moment (and this is all hypothetical and based on vampire lore), when you become a vampire, everything stops and that includes the brain, you're dead. So if you stop growing why would you be an adult the only 'adult thing' about you is your hypothetical age. I'm not advocating child molestation, but here in New York Bella is of age, she can consent to sex. I hate Twilight,- but vampires are my thing.

  • I wish there was a simulation to put girls through a fake boyfriend like Edward... then they would finally understand his right man syndrome.

  • Those who say 'get over it - it is just a story' should remember it is a story that has sold 116 million copies in 38 languages. The books have broken records for sales and Breaking Dawn was "Children's Book of the Year". Then there are the films and the DVD. This story is aimed at kids, at least teenagers, and is *massively* popular. Obviously it is reasonable to consider the impact and criticise it.

It is a stupid story, I hate it, but it does advocate certain values. Meyer's warped values.

  • Amen Laci! Hope you're doing well.

  • @xxSoAwesomeItHurtsxx It's not 'just a story'. It's being imprinted in peopls minds that thats a GOOD relationship. And over 116 MILLION copies of the books have been sold.

  • @LuckyLuciano859 You obviously have not watched her other videos. She analyzes all of her subjects this way. Yes, it's a stupid book, but so many people are into it. I think that's why she even talks about it. She always does tons of research in all of her videos. So no, she doesn't sound "dumb", that comment just makes you sound ignorant.

  • Meyer was influenced a lot by her religion, the LDS church. I spent the first 14 years of my life forced to attend church every sunday, the weekday activities, and seminary (every morning at 6am). The parallels between what the church teaches and what the books portray is in many ways spot on.

  • I would like to make a distinction here between control and abuse, because in certain situations, where a power imbalance is consensually created in a relationship, it isn't inherently abusive. HOWEVER, in the context it is presented in Twilight, Edwards possessiveness and intimidation towards Bella is a form of control that, even though she tacitly consents to it, is clearly destructive of them ever having a healthy relationship.

  • The Bella/Jacob relation is really messed up as well; he keeps trying to get to her even when she's married, and she never tells him the truth; instead she keeps egging him on resulting in more conflicts with her other violent abuser, leading to more aggression towards them and to her....

    Teen Romance!

  • ironically vampire stories are often concerned with the same themes, Stephanie Meyers doesn't break the mold as much as reinventing it and glorifying this crazy obsession we have we very dirty/very old men dominating young innocent/virginal girls/women who are naive enough to believe that this monster can love them despite the fact that it is his nature to feed on them

  • Great video, more people should start analys the medias strange behaviour when it comes to these kind of things.

  • ...it's called chamomile tea. it helps one be calm. try some, it'll help your editor skills.

  • ur boobs shake so much in this video...

  • Ugh, I wasn't going to read it or watch it but now i can just hate it without ever doing either!

  • Comment removed

  • Twilight is the evil side of the coin. If you want the equivalent good story in a parallel universe check out True Blood on HBO based on the Southern Vampire Mystery Novels

  • Laci - if you haven't done so already, please type "the oatmeal twilight" into google and read the top result.

  • your boobs are jiggling nicely all through this video

  • Thanks so much for this video! At some point, I thought about the abusive part of their relationship, too, and now that I see it all straight, it's pretty clear to me. I think girls don't realize the implications, they just think it's a sweet love story, they don't realize the impact made on their idea of a "perfect relationship". So, good job!

  • twighlight is written by a woman

  • Stephanie Myer IS Bella

  • Finally! A girl with some sense on youtube!! Subscribed!

  • I love you SO much for this...

then again, I loved you before

  • I agree 100% with you. Many girls "dream" of having a relationship like Bella's because that is what they see on the film. Many people do not realize how powerful the media is in sending messages to our society. Media sets what is acceptable and what is not in our society, and this goes beyond relationships.

  • Boobs.

  • blah blah blah blah.........

  • it's a story....if it influences your own life that much, you shouldn't be reading.

  • @Nocomment119 I remeber reading about 13-year old girls cutting themselves because they wanted "Edward" for themselves. Awesome fiction.

  • @hejpadig11 It doesn't matter if it's fantasy. It still glorifies abuse to its audience. If you like the series that's fine, but at least realize its flaws.

  • @hejpadig11 But young naive girls cannot effectively tell the difference between fantasy and reality. Whether you know it or not, your subconscious is affected by books. Twilight promotes abusive and obsessive relationships, teen pregnancy+marriage, self-destructive behavior, cheating, lying, and much much more. If you had to escape from the real world, at least read something that gives positive messages. This series is telling the future of America that it's ok to do the things I listed before

  • What do you think about relationship portrayal in True Blood? The vampires see Sookie as something to possess, and CONSTANTLY refer to her as being "theirs".

  • Comment removed

  • So true! That's really creepy now that I think about it. :/

  • Hear hear!

  • Isn't the chic in Twilight also abusive?

  • Finally someone who speaks the truth out clearly and from facts regarding real life. Thank you Lacy.

  • Well done, Laci!
