  • The questions are not really meant for you! Since you are talking about changing our lives, I am just suggesting ideas to open up our minds to become better human beings.

  • i liked this video a lot, thanks steve. i like to think that reading is just another medium, like social interaction, like movies, even like drugs, to aid in possibly enhancing, or at least rearranging, one's own perspective of the world/their self. i find that, for me personally, if the material feels related to my own experience in one way or another, its much easier to continue reading and enjoy myself doing so. on the other hand, however, if the material feels unrelated to my personal exp...

  • @tonyfalca ...fuckkkk that, and then i put the book back in its place! :)

  • Would you consider traveling to Cuba? Would you try learning a foreign language up to a level where you can actually read what the educated in that language read? or at least up to an intermediate level where you can carry on an intelligent conversation? Would you listen to fundamentalist religion followers as well as atheistic philosophers? Would you travel to a third world country and actually become acquainted with the people and not just the beaches?

  • @martinbeco what made you say that??

  • Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady, Allen Ginsberg, and William S. Burroughs all wrote books that changed my life. Norman Mailer also wrote so many wonderful books, many that are out of print. But many of them can be found from different used bookstore or online stores that offer used books, well worth any price I've found.

  • your the man!

  • hey, I just watched this movie but i could not help myself from feeling like screaming out "we do read!!" :p I think the problem is we have to read too much... every schoolbook, every book we get asigned from school, every test, every lesson on the blackbord... reading is just so connected to school, and school was such a bad part of my life that i that keeps me from wanting to read anny book ever again...I think alot more people would like reading if you did not HAVE TO read in schools..

  • This is beautiful. If only everyone could hear this. Thank you Steve.

  • So true - I've been reading more lately, and it really does open up your world. Thank you for another great video!

  • One more thing I want to add. There is a wonderful video I found on YouTube called "A Conversation with Ray Bradbury". He talks about his life and he goes into detail about how books changed his life. I think it is one of the best videos I have ever seen in my life. I highly recommend it to anyone who reads this comment. Here is the link:

    Peace.

  • Man, I really, really enjoyed this video. I really like what you said about how books can change your whole value system. That really happened to me in my late teens when I first read Wayne Dyer books. That was like a total revolution for me. I think many other things can also have that kind of impact though--things like music, movies, documentaries, traveling, art, and yes, even an occasional good television program. ;P

  • Hi Steve,

is there anywhere on the internet a list of books you would recommend?

If not, could you make such a list of books that did inspire you very much?

It should just take a few minutes to make one, and may be very inspiring for many people. Or maybe you could make a video in which you mention some titles of the most inpiring books you read in your life?

  • @vagabondsteve Thank you very much. :-)

  • -fix their own car, due to a lack of mechanics or lack of money to pay a mechanic. So they learned to do it themselves. Myself, I have NO idea how to fix engines. We're so dependent on each others' skills, we tend to lose track of simple, basic functions. But life goes on.

  • It's quite sad to watch the ending of a function, but at the same time, it's inevitable. Certain things, traits, teachings that are passed down from our fathers/forefathers can get lost lost.

I have this friend who doesnt know how to sew on a button onto her skirt. A button!

So here's me, this guy, who knows how to sew basically, sewing her little button on. Such a simple function which all people should know how to do, yet they dont. You can take it further. Most of out dads know how to fix-

  • Sometimes there are no words~ Such truth.

I wish I could meet you, we would have so much to share~ Have a Great day~Xoxx~:-)

  • Steve, you rock!

  • So true! Thanx Steve!

  • I'm reading a book on my iphone, but I do miss the feel and smell of a real book.

I do look to the internet for learning things. Right now I'm taking piano lessons for free on YT. But, I don't have anyone to be accountable to accept myself. Easy to blow it off...so I need a local teacher if I'm going to stay on course.

Too much time on the internet for me! Library? That also means going outside, lol!!!

    Good video, Steve!

  • Reading opens us up to a different world... once you catch the reading bug life becomes pretty empty without it. The information I have gained from reading has rocked my world and continues to do so. Reading, travel, music are such pleasures of life along with a few other things in moderation.... Great video Steve.

  • This summer: library for me! I've been thinking about how I don't read much now so it was really good to find you've made a video about it. x

  • The loss of reading is arguably the single most debilitating feature of modern culture and means that building blocks which can create futures are absent. We may be entering a timeless present of indecipherable texting where information passes for knowledge and, eventually, thought will disappear. The brain will no longer be surprised into action because it will not understand the black scrawls in front of it.

  • Conformity is correct Steve. I seem to be from another planet when I bring up different ideas that is not of the status quo. People aren't willing to challenge themselves and go to another level that would ASTONISH them if they took the take to take their learning into their own hands. I have nothing against college, as long as it doesn't interfere with my education, I once heard. It took some time for me to grasp that kernel of truth. Less than 3% of the population own a library card. READ!

  • Agreed with byronand5

  • Great video! I didn't enjoy reading in high school and college when I was worrying about turning-in a book report to please a teacher, or passing a test; but now, reading for my own pleasure and interests, reading and literature are wonderful!

  • Ditto on loving your videos and messages within them. Thank you!

  • Reading & music are two of my greatest passions! I love the line of the man in the library " What else am I going to do with my life!"

I just finished reading Brown's "How to live in an unfree world" that you recommended, Steve, What a powerful book! You mentioned once that you have a dozen or so books that are your very favorite. Could you please name a few? Thank you!

    Excellent video, as always.

  • Another phenomenal video Steve! I'm a bit shocked that they don't get more views. I'm really glad that I found your videos through a random search years ago. I believe I looked up "life sucks" and your video came up and I watched it and it really clicked with me and ended up watching all ur Vids and recommending certain ones to some of my friends depending on the situation they are going through. Keep the Vids up man, there may be a small following but we all look forward to them

  • Balance, balance, balance..... When I think about how many books I've read and I realize that a solid hundred ( Yes, a VERY long series) were by the same author and the same "hero" I cringe a little... The number is somewhere over a thousand but...

  • Your a smart guy man, you know what you're talking about.
