Oh man, right around 2:52 Fleck & Wooten lock in for some killer triplets! In 1998 I got to see Bela join DMB at a show in Nashville, TN during their tour for "Before These Crowded Streets." It was quite awesome!
i guess that 1 hater to this video does not had enough capacity to learn how to quit being hater. how in the world he gave a dislike to such a beautiful thing like this.
vic is doing the popping. if you watch, you'll see that when coffin starts, vic stops and dmb's bass player continues, then the screen moves and vic comes in with the popping. durr. haha
My good friend was at this show and insisted I had to hear this #41. She gave me the discs that she got from Vernal's source (people still did it old school" using bubble mailers) trusting me to return them unharmed ;-). #41 is always going to be a favorite, especially with Sojourn Of Arjuna interpolated! Great show (IDI in the middle kind of sucked), completely awesome #41! I was fortunate enough to see it live in '00 with Bela / Flecktones and again in '09 with Jeff playing Arjuna. RIP 'Roi...
Anybody else find it strange to see Jeff tearing it up like that with Leroi standing in the shadows behind him, smiling? In light of Leroi's death, it's a powerful image. Maybe it's just me. Rest in peace, Leroi.
I definitely noticed that and then scrolled down to comment on that and this is the first comment i come upon. that is amazing! if there is anybody to play in the place of leroi, it is jeff, but nobody will ever take his place in the band and he will never ever be forgotten.
Yeah... that is something, like a proud teacher looking amongst his student awarding him the spotlight in one of dmbs greatest songs. I'm not gonna appolgize for sounding a little soap oprah-ish but you pointed it out, so Cheers! and R.I.P. Leroi. I don't think any dmb fan can say that #41 ISN"T a favorite, yet it will never be the same without Leroi
This is my favorite version of my favorite song by my favorite band. Jeff and Rashawn tore this apart last tour (meaning they played it really well and took it to a high, energetic level). You're probably going to hear Sojourn of Arjuna a lot more bc everyone loves it. PS I miss Butch (and Leroi but that's obvious).
Futureman is on SYNTHAXE! Kind of secondary percussion like the guy in Umphrey's. and the Bela - Vic is awesome but Jeff on the Saxaphone, DAMN! Blows your mind.
I like Leroi's playing, but he's half the player Jeff is. I've seen both of them live. Leroi feels the groove and has a smooth, lyrical style, and he's versatile, but Coffin is MUCH more technically proficient, he's a top-level studio musician. The level of tone control, speed, and melodic complexity are way beyond Leroi. Most faster stuff I hear Leroi play are actually gimmicks that sound more impressive than they really are. He would get lost if you threw him into the mix in a Flecktones song.
I understand your perspective and agree with what you said about jeff's proficiency. The thing about jeff is that in most of the songs i heard him play sound all similar and he doesnt really change too much, as for leroi I like him because of the way he has no problem with having originality in every different song.
Totally agree zaga ! Jeff's solo was incredible and I loved every minute of it... Yet I have almost never heard the same solo from Leroi twice... I love the soul he brings to every song time and time again. Think we should just agree to say that they are both AMAZING musicians !
This clip is from a much longer 32+ minute rendition of this tune with Dave Matthews Band and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones in Ottawa April 2002. This is a good chunk of "Sojourn of Arjuna" the BF&FT tune that slides right into the middle of #41.

GEEZ US!! ?get it?
Coffin's solo was INTENSE!!
I didn't like DMB's bass player, with the obnoxious funk popping at the start of the solo though...

Uh, Victor's doing that...

Not sure what your talking about, but @ 5:03 DMB's bass player starts the popping....
onehipdawg 2 years ago
no, victor is the one who is popping while dmb's bass player is playing the regular bass line to the song.

@onehipdawg That's definitely Vic playing, mate
