Why is it that Asian horror movies all seem to think a pale girl with hair that covers one eye that shambles and then teleports is the scariest thing ever? Say what you will about generic western slasher movies but at least they change what the killer looks like movie to movie.

@note4note It's not the pale girl with black hair that's scary. The difference between Asian horror flicks and Hollywood horror flicks is the tension that builds up during the scary parts. Hollywood flicks are looking for cheap scares and pop ups while Asian horror flicks are building up the suspense with slow camera movements and a nice setting with creepy sound effects. Asian horror films also have these small details such as in the video above where her head is tilting on one side.

There are however some scary Hollywood films such as The Others, Insidious and a bunch more. However, when it comes to horror movies, asians are the masters! An example of one of the scariest scenes I've seen in my life is from Ju-On (2000) NOT JU-ON: THE GRUDGE FROM 2003 but Ju-On the TV version. The stair scene is 5x creepier than Ju-On: The Grudge.

Shutter from 2004 is also one of the scariest! And A Tale of Two sisters is more of a psychological movie but heck... the scary parts in this movie are really scary! Try watching the movie in Full HD on a big TV instead of a low quality youtube video on a 15 inch monitor.

I do believe asians do make the best horror films. But then again... what makes a movie scary? I don't find serial killers scary nor demonic monsters etc. I find the supernatural scary, the unknown. I'm never afraid while watching ghost movies and I don't get nightmares, but the atmosphere in these movies scares me

However, if you are looking for a couple good scary movies from North America, I'd recommend Jacob's Ladder, Haunting in Connecticut, and Videodrome. They stay far away from the serial killer/monster tropes and play a lot of their scares off subtlety and atmosphere.

@SaltNPeppuh ...Secondly, the biggest problem with most of the films you did mention in addition to Ringu, the Japanese Dark Water and countless other Asian horror films is how often they use the trope villain of the long haired silent ghost woman that exists because of a tragedy in their past. It fails to be creepy because aside from little tweaks to the way they kill or how they are seen it's exact same basic creature.

And yes, some of the ways the pale ghost girls are killing people are actually quite comical. Like in Ju-On 2 from 2003, althought a pretty scary movie but the scene where the ghost girl comes out of a dead woman's vagina is pure comedy.
