Arkle and the sadly forgotten Flyingbolt, the greatest two horses that ever jumped a fence.

To many, Flyingbolt is the only horse that could have beaten Arkle and his timeform rating at just 2lbs short of his rival at 210 supports this, no other horse is near them. Saw Flyingbolt win the Irish Grand National as a seven year old giving his main rivals Height of Fashion and the previous years winner Splash an unbelievable 40lbs and 42lbs respectively and still they could not get past him.

The only place Red Rum would beat Arkle is in your dreams. Arkle was simply unique,no horse would get anywhere near him on a park course.

Red Rum was a helluva horse at Liverpool,but pretty ordinary elsewhere. Having said all that there will NEVER be another horse who can win 3 Grand Nationals and be runner-up in another 2.

Red Rum was essentially a good handicapper. Excellent round Aintree's Grand National course.

Arkle ran during the sixties, so younger racing fans can be excused for not knowing how grat he was. A truly supreme champion who had no peers. He never fell during any of his races and was so far in front of all his contemporaries that the handicap system had to be revised because of him - one when he ran and another when he didn't. The best steeplechaser ever.

Has any heard of dawn run? She was the only horse ever to complete the English, Irish and French Champion Hurdle treble? The most successful mare in the national hunt racing? i know its not quite the same but surely thats also another incredible horse in the many aspects of racing? Dawn Run was the only racehorse ever to have completed the Champion Hurdle - Gold Cup double surly THATS an atchievement? I love all the racing greats but i thought i would give dawnrun a mention :)

Few people know that Flyingbolt won the Two Mile Champion Chase at Cheltenham in 1966 and the next day ran a great race to be third in the Champion Hurdle behind Salmon Spray and Sempervivum. There were some truly great chasers around in the 1960's.

Best Mate won three Gold Cups but Thommobuoy has been leaving his dumb message that he did not rate Best Mate with no reasoning for his thoughts.

He may not have been the best but he was by far the best of his generation. Rated 179 at best, he was well above average.

Moscow Flyer was the best quality of his generation but he was a 2-2.5Miler & would have ben beaten a distance over the Gold Cup trip by Matey. In any case, Moscow Flyer spent more time on the floor from what I can rememeber!

Arkle did not run in the National (which is only a handicap) because he was too good.

Firstly the owners would not risk him. Secondly he would have had to carry about 13stone 7 pound as he was about 3stone 7pound better than anything else !!!

Giving any national winner, let alone mighty Rummy 3 & a half stone would have been impossible around Aintree!!

Arkle was sublime - he won a top class Gde.1 King George by a fence & a half - INCOMPARABLE.

Mill house probably comes the closest with the exception of flying bolt.

Arkle is the only horse ever, when he ran the rules changed.

Ok as for Red Rum and Arkle, I REALLY don't understand how they can be compared! When you look at the races both were so triumphant in, they are so different, you really can't say Arkle would have won because the National is so dangerous he wasn't even entered, so you can't really compare them, and I agree with what someone said, I don't think this is fair.

Arkle would beat Red Rum by 2 fences, he was in a completely different league, and anyone who thinks otherwise is showing a complete lack of racing knowledge. I love Red Rum and his exploits around Aintree are legendary, but look what Lescargot did to him at Aintree, look at how Crisp gave Red Rum lumps of weight and just failed to beat him.

Red Rum would beat Arkle? Yes and I would beat Michael Johnson over 400 metres.

Arkle overshadowed Mill House because he was a better horse. Mill house was never asked to carry the kind of punative weight that Arkle was asked to carry and still win races. The same goes for Best Mate who would never have been able to carry that kind of weight and win three gold cups.

Red Rum would have to have started a day before if he had any hope of defeating the mighty Arkle, who was officially rated at least two stones better than the three times grand national winner. Although winning the Scottish National in 1974, Red Run was essentially an Aintre specialist. He could not have matched strides with such a great champion as Akle, let alone defeat him.

Arkle's unique ability persuaded the handicapper to devise two sets of handicaps - one when Arkle was declared, and another when he wasn't. The reason Arkle face few runners during his three Gold Cup victories was due to the fact that the most of the opposition trainers thought it pointless to take on the great horse at levels.

Please don't even attempt to compare BestMate with Arkle because you will show yourself up as a complete idiot. Arkle would have picked Best Mate up and carried him, Best Mate was a very good horse, but don't let his three gold cup wins lead you to think he should be compared with Arkle.

If you have any brains at ally ou wouldn't compare the current British 800 metre champion to Sebastian Coe, so don't compare Best Mate to Arkle, because Arkle would absolutely slaughter Best Mate.

but so were Best Mate and Dessie. For me, they fit the 'thoroughbred' idea in my mind far more than Arkle. Arkle seemed tough, unbreakable, independent. Whereas Best Mate especially, seemed extremely intelligent, proud, careful with jumping as well as graceful, with a huge, huge heart, never finishing out of the first two in his life. That IS a horse and a thoroughbred in my mind, RIP Best Mate, you will be more than just remembered! (2 many characters, sorry!)

Each pound roughly equates to a length so it was like giving a 35 length head start to his rivals and these rivals were the cream of the crop..future gold cup winners. Best mate always ran in conditions races so was always off equal weights give or take a few pounds for allowances. So while Arkle may look to beat horses by a few lengths with the weight he conceded he was really winning by up to 40 lengths.

Also, though Arkle had more weight, in his gold cups he also had less horses to compete with for space over the jumps. If it sounded like I just didn't know anything about Arkle, I do, I KNOW how good he was, but to me its not just the distance that matters. Best Mate didn't have the ability to

run as many races in a season as Arkle, but Arkle wasn't always in the first two (yes I know he won most races), nor was he QUITE as clean with his jumps (I know he didn't fall but was still sometimes careless) and hey, if I want to get petty, Best Mate looked better too! LOL, jk!! All horses have weaknesses and strengths, and Arkle I suppose just didn't seem to have any at the course, but I like personality in a horse, and god did Best Mate have it.

All I'm saying is that I don't base 'the Greatest Steeplechaser' on the same things as everybody else does, its a personal opinion. I HAVE seen Arkle race, but in my eyes I prefer Best Mate/Dessie shearly because of the effects you saw them give people, I know Arkle did the same, but I've always gotten more of a feeling watching them race. With all due respect, a lot of people wont actually let a new horse come anywhere near their favourite, no matter what, in terms of greatness.
