  • It is easy to find one's house IP, only thing left to do is adding the right port, that is ease. A piece of securety is needed here :P But verry nice. It is easy, though nice, I would like my whole house to be like this :P

  • excellent!

  • Keep up the great job, with your inhouse automation

    It has huge potential

  • Two words: packet capturing

  • why waste your time when you can just get your remote and open your garage door

  • At 3:36 THAT SPIDER SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF ME!!!

  • If you're planning to use the laptop all the time you can probably use a USB to Parralel port cable and get 10-12 GPIO outputs of it. in that case you can completely take out arduino from the circuit. it just complicates the system. but if you're planning to take out the laptop then what youre doing is great.

  • You've either already figured it out (2 years later) or someone has already mentioned it but why not cat 5/6 from the basement to the garrage, keeping the audrino board near the server so you don't have to run USB.

  • I think it's on a private switch, so it's not possiable to open anywhere in the world, just in the range of the router

  • WHY is there not yet a COMPLETED app and finished kit for this? I just want to buy a home automation kit, and hook it up to my home network, and simply get alerts while i'm in the Caymans that my garage door is open and then check the status and close it if i need to. WHY

  • How did you keep the arduino from reseting from serial communications?

  • 3:38 WTF! You have a big spider on your garage!

  • @Cybercreeps heh, yeah. that lived there for about a year, but stil scared the Mother-in-law weekly :)

  • That's pimp

  • Nice stuff, I'd done a similar thing with a door lock. Though it was running quite different. My biggest issue was safety, because it was safe on a iphone, but we could pretty easilly bypass the entrance with a laptop. What did you do for security?

  • @DiederikYBaan In the most recent iteration, which I'll do a new updated video on soon, I have employed a simple php password authentication page. that, combined with obscurity, is what keeps me feeling better. The wife lost her phone (actually lost 2) with the link. Both times we were worried about the app, but just changing the path/page rendered the old link useless.

  • you want to extend your usb cord? get usb over cat 5 adaptors. I love em. up to around 100 feet you can extend your usb with ethernet cords. relatively cheap too.

  • @6476Mike He's not wasting his life, he's using his knowledge and applying it to a concept, and getting in return a working project. You're the one hating on other's accomplishments...

  • @6476Mike Actually, I don't even keep a car in the garage typically, it's really the main point of entry for the house that we use. Funny, I just don't watch videos that I don't like, and I sure don't waste my time writing comments for them. Who's wasting what here?

  • Why go thru all that trouble to open an garage door thru a phone? Most cars have door remote controls built in the sun visors or mirror.

  • @Benzfever actual scenarios (of many more): My sister needed to borrow a carpet cleaner. That morning, before leaving for work, I left it in the garage. Later she went to the house and called me, I flipped over to the app and opened the door. (take that, Verizon).

    2) our truck has the opener in the overhead console, but we had a rental while it was in the shop. Need I say more.

    3) Went on vacation, but had a friend check mail/papers. Gave him guest access on his phone. No need for keys.

  • @Benzfever @6476Mike the only answer for this, please let me paraphrase TBBT ....

    BECAUSE HE CAN !!!!

  • everybody now, the iphone's connected to the-laptop--the laptop's connected to the-arduino--the larduino's connected to the--garage door--and then it opens

  • Get the WiShield and connect it up wirelessly. Then just send the commands over a socket in lieu of serial.

What kind of garage door opener do you have that has status?

  • door needs oil

  • nerd

  • SWEET project!!

  • Some ideas regarding your "next step" comments at the end of the video.

The arduino does have the capability to broadcast it's own web server (same resulting page, bypassing the computer and serial communications). However, if you want to stick with this setup, you can use 2 arduinos and xbee radios to communicate between them. You may only need 1 arduino board by using an ftdi cable/ breakout with xbee at the computer and an xbee connected to arduino's serial pins in the garage. Good luck!

  • Now you can open your garage door from any part of the world. WOW man you really inspire me.

  • hi i want to control a circuit by wifi directly, you can help me?, with a list of items to start looking, and I have no experience with wifi, or if you give me anything tutorials addresses will welcome this interesting your project Thanks

  • u got too much time on your hands.........

  • waiting for more Arduino videos... #please [;)]

  • #thankU

  • whats that rele call?

  • Thanks for the upload man. It gave me lost of inspiration for my project. Thank you!

  • Very nicely done!

You can use the limit switch wires of your Genie to transmit status reports. T-tap the grey and brown wires, and their common would be a chassis ground wire.

If you bought a Genie multi-function wall console, you could also wire in a momentary relay to control the light, and a latchig relay to lock out the remotes. Just make solder connections from the wall console's PCB.

  • Why don't you use the ethernet shield and write a simple iPhone app that uses a different protocol? You could send your device id as a sort of identification. And with a proximity sensor you could check wether your door is closed or not ..

  • Nice! I have a friend who is using the Arduino ethernet shield and another router. That way the only things in the garage are the Arduino, shield, and the router. My garage door unit can't tell me the state it is in, I would have to add external sensors. I have some PHP and Arduino code that will send data from the Arduino and the PHP will query it on a page refresh. Let me know if you'd like me to send that to you

  • As for the code, I'd love to take a look. And as for the garage not telling the state, all garages *should* have an "open" and "closed" trigger switch on the track that tell the motor when to stop. If I can drop the voltage coming off of there, I could feed that directly to the Arduino, but I don't want to fry it (another relay needed). With that feed to a relay, sending signal to the Arduino, and the code you mention, that could do the open/closed status.

  • That toy spider on your wall freaked me out for a sec.

  • How do you go about the whole PHP thing. I just got my arduino yesterday. I am pretty good at programing but I never used .php before. Can anyone point in the direction to start. I just want to start with something simple like I push a button on pc or ipod and the LED turns on. Any help?

  • You can put the Arduino and everything in the basement and then have an electrician run a line from your basement to your garage so everything is nice and clean looking and you won't have the project box on the wall, only two extra wires. Better yet, you can have him run the wires directly to the opener motor head (the pushbutton connections) and you can screw the button back to the wall.

  • Already did from the button. 2-wires up to the opener and 2 wires down to the basement, all along the frame of the door, just haven't updated. I have a "conduit" of sorts that is running to the basement. 20 feet of doorbell wire is running to the project board down there (still not in a box) then jumped to the arduino.

  • how far away can you be from your iphone to the computer?

  • Right now, I can do it from anywhere, literally. The issue is as of yet I don't know what the status of the door is (haven't had time to do that yet) so I get nervous that I'm accidentally opening the door when I'm at work. The page is on an obscure link, but it's on my public page served by apache over SSL. Only issue is every time I load the page I have to accept the cert warning on the phone.

  • FYI, I just did it from Ukraine 2 weeks ago. Freaked the wife out :) She was home in the states.

  • @geoffmerck Use a limit switch. They have limit switches with a retractable arm/wheel. Position the limit switch to close whenever the door is physically open. Run some leads from the switch to the arduino board and write some code :). Great video by the way.

  • Pretty neat, I made a door unlock/lock pretty simple, made arduino a Ethernet shield it controls my dog feed and door public ip but incase someone finds it you have to enter the password in the input box ie 1234 and it will allow the button to work.. its hard coded in string so if b1 is pressed and pass = 1234 then you know :) then a servo opens the lock. the RFID is neat but I got a iphone! if power fails, battery backup on router/pc so can connect locally! Good luck !

  • Dude you wouldnt be able to do that with the keypad because its wireless
