You act like it's bad to be referred to a company by another person because they make money. but with all due respect isn't that what you are doing? isn't that what all of us do Make money of each other? I'm so sick and tired of people talking bad about affiliate marketers - their jobs are hard and why not throe them a bone - some of them are noble people making a hard living. Many of the top affiliate PAYING hosts are quite frankly very good! I know because me & my clients have tried them.
@sleepysgr By doing the same thing, I am telling you to use hosts that I never tried while making a buck? Sorry no that is not what I am doing. Yes I have advertising, and if there is anything I recommend I actually try it (like the kindles) I will not recommend hosts or products for the sake of payment when not even using them.. Or get a payout from those that pay for a fake rating. I have no issues with companies running affiliate programs, just those that lie to make a buck.
These are useless reviews. Your better off staying away from them because they will just steer you in the wrong direction. I purchased a product that they said was the Best in the field. Their TOP recommmentdation. Their #1 choice! When I downloaded the program I was immediately frustrated with the simplest of tasks. This led me to investigate and reveal their bias. I called my credit card company to stop payment immediately and then purchased the right program based on my own review.
To the person who decided to post and then delete their youtube.com account. no I am not hosting with godaddy anymore, currently with media temple but in progress of moving to another hosts that I have not tried before.
I dont know why people host with godaddy, I just find them like a domain seller, thats it. Also, nice video man, never realized about those affiliate links. What about free hosting reviews?
Good video and nicely put together. I found this video when i started visiting webhost review sites... i was thinking, what's the deal... #1 according to one review site doesn't even feature in the top 25 list of another site, so i was thinking something 'fishy' was going on. And it seems that there are just about as many hosting review sites as there are webhosts. And I also found some 'customer reviews' on one webhost that was exactly the same on another which clearly marks them as fraudulent!
-Continued- I reported them to my bank for fraudulent activity & my bank ruled in my favor & I recieved all of my money back. If they do this to you also, you should report them to your financial center. They (Fat Cow) are not a conscientious company like they portray.
@therocketgirlchannel if you do a search on my blog for endurance international group you will find that fat cow is just one of the many hosts they own that appear in top 10 lists.
Continuation- Then I went on the Fat Cow website & the FIRST thing it asks for is your credit card number. I input it because I figured they would need it for the "monthly billing" that they advertise for1 Well their system had glitches & i could not even build my site, and when I called thier c/s the same night, I got absoluteley nowhere. AND THEY TOOK MY CREDIT CARD INFORMATION AND WITHOUT MY PERMISSION BILLED IT FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR OF SERVICES!!! I reported them to my bank for fraud.
I'm so glad you put this on you-tube. Just yesterday I was checking out web hosts & saw this "review" SCAM at the top of google's lists. Then I saw that THEY GET PAID FOR THIER "UNBIASED" REVIEWS!! Aagh! Why are soooooooo many people shady & corrupt by greed. Scumbags! And the person who remarked about "Fat Cow" being shady, is TOTALLY CORRECT. When I checked out there Domain I thought, "what a great, green, thoughtful company," and I totally planned on doing business with them.
i found this video very helpful. I happened to come across quite a few of these "review" websites, and I saw right through them. One thing that gave it away was all the sites had very different lists for the top 10.
so now that we know not to trust any- who DO you trust? I want to start a small ecommerce website, so i need the shopping cart capabilities. any suggestions on who to go to? I also was looking into iPage- but after reading yulkwondo below, i don't know now. help!
@seanyboy107 I suggest not trusting any of them. For tips on finding your own host I recommend reading my July 12, 2011 post titled "My Top Ten Host……. tips – How to pick a shared host"
So is GoDaddy a bad place for webhosting to? They have been around for years and I always thought they were on the up and up. Just bought a site from them.
@tcbaqua I used to host with them, but the server I was on became to slow. Support seems to often to deal with someone that has to go through a faq section. Which honestly after 4 years of hosting my site on their servers I did not start using support til last year. In general they may be ok for a start up site where you don't have questions support wise you might be ok,
iPage/Endurance International/Bizland/Fat Cow, whatever you want to call it... they rip you off! Beware! They will charge you at least $40 to cancel. $15 plus whatever they come up with in so-called fees. Their CEO is Thomas Gorny. Their address is 70 Blanchard Rd., Burlington, MA 01803. If you get scammed, this is where you should send the complaint... in case you decide to file a class action lawsuit.
ok, now that you've busted all these sites...what are some good web hosting sites? I'm an amateur website builder (stress on the word "amateur") and I really want to put a website online. I use Dreamweaver CS5 and I just don't have that much money. Also, does anyone know how I can put my website in search engines like Google, Yahoo, & Bing so that it shows up in the search results? I've been looking for that but all the results so far have only told me how to put an ad. Thanks.
Why do people have to pay at all to make a website? Why can't I create a server and take a website online without using a host service? I don't see where the cost comes from.. to me, having to pay to put a website online is like having to pay for putting a billboard on your own property, it should be free. Ok, there is infrastructure cost (you have to pay the ISP), but as long as you don't go over your data limit it should make no difference what you use it for.
@reviewsexposed You can host at home, but I dislike fact you have to pay a registrar to get a .com or .co.uk domain. Everyone on the planet should be entitled to at least one free .com domain or country of origin related domain. Who decided we have to pay for nothing? Ok, I can make a .tk or .co.cc or have one with a stupid (e.g. mobileme) domain before sub domain, but they come with hidden costs like advertising. More stuff should be free IMHO, internet and telephone included.
@jimmimak If domain was the only thing I had to worry about I would be a very rich man. How do you propose we have the satellites, the copper wires, and other parts of service paid for if those things you wished were free?
@reviewsexposed The government should pay for these things! If the government wants to help its economy, they should provide the means to do business, and communication is the key. It's also possible to use the electricity grid as a network, but thats another story. I'm fairly sure internet is connected by underwater cables, there is a transatlantic fibre optic bundle and also one in Asia that was damaged when the tsunami hit. Satellites for internet exist but are not mainstream.
@jimmimak Unfortunately there is not enough room for a counter argument here. The first of which is we pay the government, hence more free stuff means more taxes. Given the current finical situation I don't think thats something most governments would be willing to pay for. Some 20 years the internet has been available to the general paying public, which has pushed new technology. Not to mention there are a lot of corporations out there that don't deserve more hand outs at tax payer expense.
@alliax Yes and taxes are paid by whom? Seriously I see people put more into a website when they actually pay for it then when they get it for free. Honestly at around $10 a year for a domain, and a few bucks a month for hosting, the burden should be on the people who want a site, not the tax payer.
@jimmimak Uh, ok. This "billboard on your own property" is quite possible - get a sub-domain name through dyndns and point it to your home computer. Your home internet is designed to give you less bandwidth for sending out as opposed to bringing the data to you, so that's a bottleneck- one of the many reasons you'd want a real host environment in an actual datacenter..
Do you have a diesel generator and fuel for a week?
Do you have UPS systems?
Do you have the ability to maintain your server 24/7- These are what a good hosting provider should provide... Alot of them don't :(
Oh yeah and domains are owned by ICONN (or something) its just a system of servers to help people find stuff that has become very popular thus everything is built to work with it.
@jimmimak You certainly can create your own server(s) and put a website online. Not nearly as cheap as webhosting. You could compare needing to pay for hosting to run your website just like you need to pay for gas to run your car. Of course, you could always get your own fuel....but not nearly as cheap as just paying for it at a gas station.
@jimmimak because the bandwith you will get will be significantly lower than the one you would get with a hosting service. at 24mbps adsl connection you get 1 mbps upload That's like 256kbytes per second. That is almost nothing! Lets not forget also that you may want to put media (video streaming) and that would be impossible with a personal line. You will have to get a really expensive buisness line and those start at 300-400$ per month compared to the 10$ of the hosting service.
It's a common sense, but some people (newbies) don't have a clue. Thank you for educating them. The only honest and unbiased place that I know is webhostingtalk
@VistaCerralvo you missed the point, its not that the hosts are a scam. Its the review sites, who do this only to get paid. They do not actually see if the hosts they recommend actually live up to their claims. In most cases they don't even host with them.
Hmm I was reading a few "Web host review" sites and they did seem a bit false, anyway found this video and cant believe I actually considered them to be true. Any idea of any good forums that discuss web hosting and domains, im guessing thats the best place I could go to find good unbiased reviews?
@ArchitekOGP I wish I could say that I knew good places to look. Not all hosts are listed in the same areas. For that matter while reviewing some hosts, I find that their listings are not in the so called hosting review sites. The best thing I can recommend is just typing in a hosts name into a search engine. This is part of what I do look up dirt on a host. Did I mention that I am biased against unlimited space packages?
I've just spent 3 hours trying to find a good web host. I can't say that this video has helped much. I KNOW many or most host review sites are undependable -- how about telling us some that ARE (IF there are any)? Yes, I see you mention CNET, but they're not a site dedicated to comprehensive reviews. What about the ones that "claim" to be based on customer reviews... do you know if those are from real customers?? This is getting surprisingly frustrating... PLEASE: SOME REAL ANSWERS!!!
@TroyOi personally I am in the progress of finding a good host, all the hosts I am currently using are adequate but have flaws that don't justify me recommending them.
@reviewsexposed That would be great but it's not what I'm asking. What I'd like to know is which sources of information about web hosts (besides yourself) can be considered reliable. I've seen some that CLAIM independence (ie, accept no money), others that CLAIM to be based on customer reviews. Even then I'm still not wholly convinced.
I see ArchitekOGP just made a similar request in his comment. You've shown us the dark side of host reviews -- thanks! Now is there a side of truth and light?
@TroyOi The best I can do is warn about the bad ones at this time. My advice (what little I can squeeze into a YouTube comment) is to look for reviews with more detail. The biggest flaw I find in many hosting review sites is they don't give a lot of details as to why you should pick a host. Also try and see if they host with their so call top 10, most do not. Why should you host with a company they do not use? The reason is they only list the hosts based on high payouts.
@TroyOi I am not sure Alexa points where someone is hosted. I use domain dossier to do my whois searches because I like to look at network info an such. webhostingtalk is questionable. I have seen them attack people that give negative feed back and side with the host in many complaints. Not to mention I have seen moderators side with webhostingstuff in regards to negative post being deleted. There are no forums at this time that I can say I approve of that are just hosting related.
@StickyIky are you asking should you cancel them? I don't know much about webfusion. But I do know that Justhost and 1and like to spend a lot on referrals. I will soon be doing a blog post on whom of the Endurance International Group (justhost is a part of) of who is the cheapest. So perhaps maybe you might want to leave justhost for a cheaper alternative from the same company.
Ok, fair enough. But there are actually many affiliates out there that are working really hard to earn their cash by trying to provide excellent products to a given market! If your looking for a good host.. research it! It doesn't take a brain surgeon to distinguish for themselves whats hot and whats not, and if they are diligent enough they will be able to.. "Separate the wheat from the chaff."
@kiwigirl2007online Those "working really hard" affiliates are drowned out by a sea of so called "unbiased" review sites. Most people do not know how to research "it". If it was easy I would not have a website thats growing in traffic every day in regards to this particular subject. This would just be another video with a few hits, on an account thats not maintained.
@reviewsexposed With respect you have done an awesome job here and the video rocks! Unfortunately there are a lot of shady affiliate marketers out there making the rest look kind of suspect. But thanks to people like yourself... those, that maybe unfamiliar to the world of internet marketing may be able to get a bit of insight into how these things work and not get sucked in so easily by some of these led-by-greed and unethical shady marketers!
@MultiBrados *blush* no smarter then anyone else. I was just tired of getting burned by bad review companies, I am sure someone else would have done the same thing.
Right keep up with this work ye, coz Im and so many other ppl are so pissed off with this and shit like it, it really needs exposing, its always about the coin, bust other crap too, all the shitty con things, you really are doing a service to the the internet. community
@MonSwon I am working on the webhosting companies right now, just put my site in blog mode. Problem is the first 10 hosts I reviewed have a lot of dirt.
You may or may not be right about the scam, I don't know. But think of it like this. If you ran a site that listed the best host sites with links to each, wouldn't you join the affiliation with every site on that list? You could run the list 100% genuinely, and still accept the click-through revenue from whichever link a user visited. I know I would. The incriminating evidence would be if they were Only affiliated with the top few.
@94dgrif First I ask you what defines a scam? Perhaps something along the lines of fabricating information to lead to high payout, could that be a scam? Because that is what these sites are doing. Yes they could run legitimately with affiliate links, but that is not how these companies work. They work on a high affiliate payout, if you don't believe me go to these "top" hosts and look at their affiliate programs. Some run secondary affiliate programs with companies like cj.com.
@reviewsexposed I agree with you that a lot of list sites are biased, and I'd probably go as far as to say that most are. But I don't believe that being an affiliate of a company in the list is evidence of bias. In the same way I recommend AVG to everyone that needs an anti-virus program because it's my personal favorite. I became an affiliate of AVG so that if people follow my advice I get a commission.
@94dgrif Why would an affiliate not be biased? For that matter when you promote your virus program do you compare it to others? I actually have, and I have had better results from nod32, but then again AVG is better then Norton. Most host affiliates do not even try the hosts they recommend. One example is a affiliate I did a post on recently called whybluehost, who are not even hosted on bluehost but hostgator servers. Big difference between promoting what use and what you don't use.
@bearwoodbrown Those "awards" are nothing more then affiliates, there not real companies. They award whomever pays the most on commissions. They don't bother to try the hosts to create real reviews.
@1996quique It's a link that company that host the reviews get paid for every time someone clicks on it. So essentially that means whichever affiliate pays more per click, they will be a higher rank.
Hey, nice video.. great job with exposing these frauds... what do you think about INMOTION hosting ?? i have read a lot of customers, like real customers comments about INMOTION, and they say its good... what about hostgator too ???
@heightboosting inmotion is number 6 on webhostingstuff's top 25 list, so I have to say there not a company to consider, especially since they have a over the top affiliate payout. I will actually doing a blog post about them tomorrow.
In my opinion Just host is the best web hosting company. I don't have any problems with them. and the live support is good when you need answer for your problems or your qestions
@alexandrubalaci33 Just host is number 2 on webhostingstuff's top 25, they have a a really huge affiliate payout. I am sorry but they use fake reviews. I am happy your having no problems at this time. But if I were you once the problems start happening I would migrate to a host that does not use fake reviews and does not pay out extremely high payments to affiliates.
I made the mistake of going with Dreamhost, and they've been down 3 times in the last month, and for 4 hours today, which is why I'm here looking for a new site.
@BarbieRetiree CNET is a great source for tech information and articles, but beware of their forums. They are poorly moderated and moderators seldom respond when inaccurate or flame/hate speech is reported nor do they seem proactive when it comes to removing obviously false posts.
Anyone can post a review on CNET, but there is very little oversight. Get your tech info from CNET, but if you want honest hosting reviews CNET is not the place (in my opinion).
@sgtpete1 I have not done any research on hostmonster yet, but I can tell you that I would not go to hostgator since they have a extremely high affiliate payout. Plust hostgator at this time is number 5 on webhostingstuff's top 25 list.
Affiliate links don't seem sinister to me. They're providing traffic to these sites, they should get a kickback.
The ones with the pre-paid placement seem much more scammy. I'm looking for a free host , but there's too much junk out there, was hoping this would clear it up some, but it doesn't much. I already suspected paid placement.
Oh, and re:web design, if you can write an ebay ad, you can make a web page. Don't get scammed into paying for it.
@llwyth Wait you're saying people who pay for web hosting are getting scammed? Free hosting is unreliable and slow. Paid hosting is the way to go but make sure you don't choose a host that oversells. For example godaddy.
@llwyth The problem is not so much that they are affiliates, its the pretending to review and give a positive spin to mislead people into believing they are getting a good deal. The other problem is that more focus in spending on affiliates and advertising then actual spending on customer care.
biggest scammer - talking about hosting company - is Inmotion Hosting. We paid them $500 for 1 year of service. 1/2 year later when their server cannot handle our site, they send a "final notice". We canceled their service, and they keep the money - NO REFUND! this is the worst web hosting company we have used. They actually get paid for their incompetence. WOW!
I've been trying to find a new host for a long time but the net is so flooded with those sites and hosts in general trying to hustle you. (For example, was just reading JustHost's terms saw the "guaranteed" refund if service sucks, will cost $20!)
Great idea, people are so cheap. Great way to expose. Morality all the way, at least be more unique in the way reviews are done. It's getting old, and as mentioned in this video, all about money. Mission ComPleted
Sad truth of the matter is that this is, for the most part, likely to continue. 00.00.00.00 ( IPv4) is a loony circus of spoofing but no one is likely to move forward. This person's work is remarkable and commendable but even though Comcast put up a free-help for transition to IPv6 ( much, much stronger and spoof-proof ) no one, including the majors ( who should have the technical talent ) has even bothered to obtain an IPv6 - let alone move away from IPv4
I made my own hosting company and work local... Screw you hosting companies killing the little man... stop doing unlimited hosting.. PPL DONT NEED UNLIMITED.. let the small fish eat!!! ahem justhost, host gator/ i hate u lol
Great video, so true. Begs the question why aren't there any community based host review sites where the best hosts are calculated by democratic user-review?
Thank you, I've just fallen fowl from a recommendation in hostgeeks amongst many others. Just assigned a new hoster as a result of their 'independent ranking'
So be warned, InMotion don't have great support or a great service but they do have a great SMM team posting how wonderful they are!
Unlimited resources or big amount of resources for ridiculous prices are symptoms of overselling and overloading. Which means you will NOT get anything unlimited and your website(s) will end up in an overloaded server with another 2 thousands clients fighting for the server resources provoking server crashes and unstability.
Big hosting companies are full of marketing tricks and gimmicks. Just remember, there is no such thing as UNLMITED. Everything has a limit and you should know yours when buying hosting. If they do not inform you about those limits then you're up for a big surprise.
I'm glad someone finally did this, I run a small family webhosting company and instead of buying reseller accounts we bought our own machines, got into it at webhostingtalk and got my head handed to me by these kind of people, all it takes is money, all I want to do is offer a good service
Ok, I thought this as well. Not shocking really. Follow the money trail to find out business's (in this case, web hosting reviewers) motives. So pertinent question : What are some good unbiased/unlobbied sites for considering a good web host provider?
eye opener .... THANK YOU ... im looking to launch a e store soon and ive been searching for a good host which provides good cart and additional features like multiple currencies, tax options and international shipping options plus preferably with a shared SSL certificate ...
who would you recommend for a good hosting plan or do you think network solutions, ebaym yahoo stores or amazon webstores are a better option ... thanks for the video and any help.
I'm with you! I am looking for a good web host to get companines to advertise on my site. I tried justhost. Its a bate and switch and misleading. You ask for one package and they give you another. and the say you get your money back, but they keep some. Even if you never used there site. They play with your sanity. Don't go there. Please help.
Thank you, you saved me from paying money to an unethical company and probably saved me from a slew of headaches. I almost went with the advice of one of the "top 10" web hosting reviews.
im a newbie but SOOON to be a pro lol..but i was wondering if someone could answer this question "what is an affiliate link is it the same thing as a backlink?....like if u put a link on your site saying come over to there site is it that kind of deal??????
Excellent video. I always thought there was something fishy whenever I saw all of the same "ratings" for each hosting company. Thanks for the enlightenment.
In the interests of objectivity, I don't make web hosting recommendations... but after you watch the video, you will have a better idea as to what to look for. Bottom-line: Who would you rather host with? A company that puts 70 cents out of every dollar into marketing? Or a company that puts 70 cents out of every dollar into service and better equipment? :) Marketing grows a business, but superior service keeps clients :)
Dot5 just caused me a great headache by shutting down my site because my podcast had "too much out-bound traffic"--this wasn't even CLOSE to the 15,000 GB bandwidth they claimed to offer me. What is a good service, folks! ...sigh. Okay. I got suckered by those sites, too.
I suspected this. Nice way by the way. Is there any place you can go to get an unbiased review because I am looking for a web host. I used one of these and ended up with Lunar pages and they are god awful.
Thanks for your comments. Sorry to hear about your experience with Lunar Pages. The best bet for hosting is to research well and avoid the so-called TOP 10 Hosts.
That "reasearch well" is where I need help-How? I don't know anyone personally that has a web site. Where should I look-anything you can point me to that gives a good unbiased review and/or summary?
I've used lp for about 3 years now, and I must say that I have not had a reason to complain yet. My site has never been down, I've never had a problem with various payment methods, my band width is admiral, the panel is solid also. For me, it's perfect. I have yet to have a problem with any site that I have designed on their servers...so, I dont know, maybe it's just my luck.
Hello!?? LOL Go to hosting-reviews-exposed (dot) com and you'll see that the #1 spot can be bought for $2,000. The #9 spot can be purchased for $600. Visit the site and look at the proof.
I agree, I tried Office Live. Wasn't impressed. No FTP. You have to use their website builder... and you're stuck. Support took 24+ hours to get back to me. IF you're looking for a good host, then try one that offers cPanel Web Hosting. Then Google their name and add the word "sucks". Generally when people complain about a host, they use that word... and the results can be found on Google easily.
How do we know that the more they pay the better the placement? Pointing out aff. links and advertising space does not prove this is how the site owner operates his website. I first posted because I found a site like this and the admin was very helpful in providing info and help when I was new to hosting. I knew he was making money but he was very helpful. I guess some sites might operate like how you are saying. I just don't think we should throw them all under the bus though.
""How do we know that the more they pay the better the placement?"" To answer your question, visit this site: (hosting-reviews-exposed (dot) com. The site URL is at the end of the video. The site has copies of emails from one of these so-called ratings sites. If you pay $2,000 you get #1 placement.... $1,000 for #2 placement, etc.... all the way down to the #9 spot for $600.
I don't get it? Every website has affiliate links. You have shorted these sites the service they are providing. Shopping for a host can be a big task when looking for what you want. They have created a place to search and compare different hosting plans and features in one easy interface. Some have databases with thousands. It's EASIER! But if you want to try and criminalize them with your police lights and big exposed sign go ahead. Spin on spin doctor. Spin on
Thanks for the feedback, but you've missed the obvious question: Should the truth be for sale? Host ratings currently *are* FOR SALE and these so-called top-10 sites are misleading. "Ratings" are not based on objective information, nor are they based on the consumer experience; they are financially motivated. The hosting company that can pay the most, gets the best rating. That's the spin and that's the fact.
Jsurej, if you don't get it, I'll explain. The video shows how hosting company ratings are not based on facts, but instead based on dollars. The more you pay, the better your rating.
What if Rosie O'Donnell won the Miss America Pageant because she bribed her way to the top. Can you honestly say that would be acceptable results? Cheating is cheating no matter how you want to "spin" it.
Thank you for doing this. Most people believe what anyone writes, and if Google lists it, then it must be real. WRONG. Exposed is perfect. Most of these companies on the top 10 are affiliates of each other, and therefore have thousands upon thousands of links. Yes it is true, if you have the money, you can get to the top of anything, even get a president elected, but on Google, you also need thousands of links to get to the top of these indexes.
Most hosting companies are now offering 1000 GB of space + 2000 GB of transfer for 3 bucks a month. This makes me wonder when they are going to offer webhosting in datacenter packages...like:
1 datacenter: $3.95/m
5 datacenters: $6.95/m
10 datacenters: $9.95/m
LOL ! The webhosting industry is like a "all you can stuff in a 40 ton truck" restaurant now...it's all fucked up. The problem is that most customers are stupidly looking for extreme numbers.
Hostmonster and BlueHost are the *same* company. They sell the same essential product (hosting) -- but one is more expensive than the other (the support is the same, too, ie same group of people.) Personally, I would stay away any company that plays that sort of game. I would wager to say that ALL of the reviews you've seen about HostMonster are affiliate-oriented (or the review/rating is on a site that caters to the hosting industry).
Had a hosting with hostmonster - apparently our 15mb mysql database took up too much cpu - even though it was a standard openx install... they shut down the site without warning or contact until after the fact on a Sunday night at 6pm and after 40 minutes on hold said there was no way to get it back online until 8am the next morning... i begged to get the cpanel and ftp back which they did so i could go somewhere else.
the size of your database in MB has nothing to do with CPU use. You could have 1000mb database that is never queried and uses no CPU. or you could have a 1mb database that get 1 million queries a day.
I'm looking for shared linux hosting. I was with a UK host and they were crap.
USA hosting seems to offer so much more for less. In fact i was looking at Host Monster, Lunar Pages and Siteground. So, what do i do? Go with a UK host and pay ridiculous monthly fees for 1 Mysql database etc.Now i an confused
Generally speaking, US-based hosts advertise more simply due to competition, but seldom can they actually deliver on their promises over the long run. They've all crafted their offerings to be similar to the competition -- thus the same prices, same resources, etc. In my experience, you'll be much happier paying more for a quality U.K. host if the majority of your visitors are expected to be U.K. based. There is perceptible speed degradation with U.S.-based sites when accessed offshore.
It's one thing to produce info about companies and make money, but it's an all new low if you are not only bias, but try to fool people to build you business.
You're absolutely right about that. Incidentally, a lot of hosting companies get into legal trouble by not adequately disclosing the relationip between their host ratings site and their hosting company: Point in case: FeaturePrice hosting (now defunct) used Google adwords to promote themselves in a "top 10" format. FeaturePrice is no longer in existance, but the owner now runs IXWebhosting (based out of Hopkinsville, KY).
Excellent video. Well done. Could use a sound track, but other than that the material is A+. People need to be aware that most reviews sites are little more than paid advertisements and in sum the very definition of fraud. Again, well done.
Right -- excellent point. When you go to a reviews site, you really only see one-side of a web hosting company: the view from the affiliate who runs/owns the review site. Keep in mind however, that hosting reviews sites that contain affiliate links + reviwes from actual customers often censor and edit the reviews; they have tendency to keep the negative reviews and delete the positive reviews -- unless they are in reference to the companies the hosting reviews site is promoting.
I think it foolish to use these sites as a method of finding hosting when they do not have the best interests of those that visit their site in mind, but rather the interest in modifying individual's responses on the basis of what will get them affiliate fees. The tobacco company had lots of advertising, but that did not mean they had consumer interests in mind.
Wow. What an eye-opener. I always thought it was weird that web host review sits promote the same companies over and over. I always though it was because they were the best hosts. I didn't know it was because the hosting companies were just paying more.
I've been through a lot of hosting by reviews, forums & surfing. Though what you say is quite true the best way is still to look at what are being offered whether they are on the list or not. Remember, a hosting that is capable of paying money to advertise would also happen to be a more stable and more well developed.
I know because me & my clients have tried them.
sleepysgr 1 month ago
@sleepysgr By doing the same thing, I am telling you to use hosts that I never tried while making a buck? Sorry no that is not what I am doing. Yes I have advertising, and if there is anything I recommend I actually try it (like the kindles) I will not recommend hosts or products for the sake of payment when not even using them.. Or get a payout from those that pay for a fake rating. I have no issues with companies running affiliate programs, just those that lie to make a buck.
reviewsexposed 1 month ago

CaptCamping 4 months ago
Good video and nicely put together. I found this video when i started visiting webhost review sites... i was thinking, what's the deal... #1 according to one review site doesn't even feature in the top 25 list of another site, so i was thinking something 'fishy' was going on. And it seems that there are just about as many hosting review sites as there are webhosts. And I also found some 'customer reviews' on one webhost that was exactly the same on another which clearly marks them as fraudulent!
zillionz 5 months ago
-Continued- I reported them to my bank for fraudulent activity & my bank ruled in my favor & I recieved all of my money back. If they do this to you also, you should report them to your financial center. They (Fat Cow) are not a conscientious company like they portray.
therocketgirlchannel 5 months ago
@therocketgirlchannel if you do a search on my blog for endurance international group you will find that fat cow is just one of the many hosts they own that appear in top 10 lists.
reviewsexposed 5 months ago

I also was looking into iPage- but after reading yulkwondo below, i don't know now. help!

tcbaqua 8 months ago
@tcbaqua I used to host with them, but the server I was on became to slow. Support seems to often to deal with someone that has to go through a faq section. Which honestly after 4 years of hosting my site on their servers I did not start using support til last year. In general they may be ok for a start up site where you don't have questions support wise you might be ok,
reviewsexposed 5 months ago
iPage/Endurance International/Bizland/Fat Cow, whatever you want to call it... they rip you off!

Ok, there is infrastructure cost (you have to pay the ISP), but as long as you don't go over your data limit it should make no difference what you use it for.
jimmimak 11 months ago
@jimmimak You can, you just need to know how to do it.
reviewsexposed 11 months ago
@reviewsexposed You can host at home, but I dislike fact you have to pay a registrar to get a .com or .co.uk domain. Everyone on the planet should be entitled to at least one free .com domain or country of origin related domain. Who decided we have to pay for nothing? Ok, I can make a .tk or .co.cc or have one with a stupid (e.g. mobileme) domain before sub domain, but they come with hidden costs like advertising. More stuff should be free IMHO, internet and telephone included.
jimmimak 11 months ago
@jimmimak If domain was the only thing I had to worry about I would be a very rich man. How do you propose we have the satellites, the copper wires, and other parts of service paid for if those things you wished were free?
reviewsexposed 11 months ago 3
@reviewsexposed The government should pay for these things! If the government wants to help its economy, they should provide the means to do business, and communication is the key. It's also possible to use the electricity grid as a network, but thats another story. I'm fairly sure internet is connected by underwater cables, there is a transatlantic fibre optic bundle and also one in Asia that was damaged when the tsunami hit. Satellites for internet exist but are not mainstream.
jimmimak 11 months ago
@jimmimak Unfortunately there is not enough room for a counter argument here. The first of which is we pay the government, hence more free stuff means more taxes. Given the current finical situation I don't think thats something most governments would be willing to pay for. Some 20 years the internet has been available to the general paying public, which has pushed new technology. Not to mention there are a lot of corporations out there that don't deserve more hand outs at tax payer expense.
reviewsexposed 11 months ago
@reviewsexposed that's what taxes are for!
alliax 8 months ago
@alliax Yes and taxes are paid by whom? Seriously I see people put more into a website when they actually pay for it then when they get it for free. Honestly at around $10 a year for a domain, and a few bucks a month for hosting, the burden should be on the people who want a site, not the tax payer.
reviewsexposed 5 months ago
@jimmimak invent your own internet and you can have as many domains as you want. no one is entitled to anything.
LordJummy 10 months ago
@jimmimak Uh, ok. This "billboard on your own property" is quite possible - get a sub-domain name through dyndns and point it to your home computer. Your home internet is designed to give you less bandwidth for sending out as opposed to bringing the data to you, so that's a bottleneck- one of the many reasons you'd want a real host environment in an actual datacenter..
bjornborg 9 months ago
@jimmimak
Generally:
Do you have a diesel generator and fuel for a week?
Do you have UPS systems?
Do you have the ability to maintain your server 24/7- These are what a good hosting provider should provide... Alot of them don't :(
Oh yeah and domains are owned by ICONN (or something) its just a system of servers to help people find stuff that has become very popular thus everything is built to work with it.
BBQTeach 9 months ago
@jimmimak You certainly can create your own server(s) and put a website online. Not nearly as cheap as webhosting. You could compare needing to pay for hosting to run your website just like you need to pay for gas to run your car. Of course, you could always get your own fuel....but not nearly as cheap as just paying for it at a gas station.
tonbert 9 months ago
@jimmimak because the bandwith you will get will be significantly lower than the one you would get with a hosting service. at 24mbps adsl connection you get 1 mbps upload That's like 256kbytes per second. That is almost nothing! Lets not forget also that you may want to put media (video streaming) and that would be impossible with a personal line. You will have to get a really expensive buisness line and those start at 300-400$ per month compared to the 10$ of the hosting service.

Hmm I was reading a few "Web host review" sites and they did seem a bit false, anyway found this video and cant believe I actually considered them to be true. Any idea of any good forums that discuss web hosting and domains, im guessing thats the best place I could go to find good unbiased reviews?
ArchitekOGP 1 year ago
@ArchitekOGP I wish I could say that I knew good places to look. Not all hosts are listed in the same areas. For that matter while reviewing some hosts, I find that their listings are not in the so called hosting review sites. The best thing I can recommend is just typing in a hosts name into a search engine. This is part of what I do look up dirt on a host. Did I mention that I am biased against unlimited space packages?
reviewsexposed 1 year ago
I've just spent 3 hours trying to find a good web host. I can't say that this video has helped much. I KNOW many or most host review sites are undependable -- how about telling us some that ARE (IF there are any)? Yes, I see you mention CNET, but they're not a site dedicated to comprehensive reviews. What about the ones that "claim" to be based on customer reviews... do you know if those are from real customers?? This is getting surprisingly frustrating... PLEASE: SOME REAL ANSWERS!!!
TroyOi 1 year ago
@TroyOi personally I am in the progress of finding a good host, all the hosts I am currently using are adequate but have flaws that don't justify me recommending them.
reviewsexposed 1 year ago
@reviewsexposed That would be great but it's not what I'm asking. What I'd like to know is which sources of information about web hosts (besides yourself) can be considered reliable. I've seen some that CLAIM independence (ie, accept no money), others that CLAIM to be based on customer reviews. Even then I'm still not wholly convinced.
I see ArchitekOGP just made a similar request in his comment. You've shown us the dark side of host reviews -- thanks! Now is there a side of truth and light?
TroyOi 1 year ago
@TroyOi The best I can do is warn about the bad ones at this time. My advice (what little I can squeeze into a YouTube comment) is to look for reviews with more detail. The biggest flaw I find in many hosting review sites is they don't give a lot of details as to why you should pick a host. Also try and see if they host with their so call top 10, most do not. Why should you host with a company they do not use? The reason is they only list the hosts based on high payouts.
reviewsexposed 1 year ago
@reviewsexposed "Also try and see if they host with their so call top 10, most do not."
That's an interesting point. Would you get that info from a Whois, or maybe Alexa?
What about web hosting forums - any recommendations there? I see webhostingtalkDOTcom seems to be popular. Do you have a favorite?
TroyOi 1 year ago
@TroyOi I am not sure Alexa points where someone is hosted. I use domain dossier to do my whois searches because I like to look at network info an such. webhostingtalk is questionable. I have seen them attack people that give negative feed back and side with the host in many complaints. Not to mention I have seen moderators side with webhostingstuff in regards to negative post being deleted. There are no forums at this time that I can say I approve of that are just hosting related.

reviewsexposed 1 year ago
Ok, fair enough. But there are actually many affiliates out there that are working really hard to earn their cash by trying to provide excellent products to a given market! If your looking for a good host.. research it! It doesn't take a brain surgeon to distinguish for themselves whats hot and whats not, and if they are diligent enough they will be able to.. "Separate the wheat from the chaff."
kiwigirl2007online 1 year ago
@kiwigirl2007online Those "working really hard" affiliates are drowned out by a sea of so called "unbiased" review sites. Most people do not know how to research "it". If it was easy I would not have a website thats growing in traffic every day in regards to this particular subject. This would just be another video with a few hits, on an account thats not maintained.

@reviewsexposed With respect you have done an awesome job here and the video rocks! Unfortunately there are a lot of shady affiliate marketers out there making the rest look kind of suspect. @MonSwon I am working on the webhosting companies right now, just put my site in blog mode. Problem is the first 10 hosts I reviewed have a lot of dirt.
reviewsexposed 1 year ago
You may or may not be right about the scam, I don't know. But think of it like this. If you ran a site that listed the best host sites with links to each, wouldn't you join the affiliation with every site on that list? You could run the list 100% genuinely, and still accept the click-through revenue from whichever link a user visited. I know I would. The incriminating evidence would be if they were Only affiliated with the top few.
94dgrif 1 year ago
@94dgrif First I ask you what defines a scam? Perhaps something along the lines of fabricating information to lead to high payout, could that be a scam? Because that is what these sites are doing. Yes they could run legitimately with affiliate links, but that is not how these companies work. They work on a high affiliate payout, if you don't believe me go to these "top" hosts and look at their affiliate programs. Some run secondary affiliate programs with companies like cj.com.
reviewsexposed 1 year ago
@reviewsexposed I agree with you that a lot of list sites are biased, and I'd probably go as far as to say that most are. But I don't believe that being an affiliate of a company in the list is evidence of bias. In the same way I recommend AVG to everyone that needs an anti-virus program because it's my personal favorite. I became an affiliate of AVG so that if people follow my advice I get a commission.
94dgrif 1 year ago
@94dgrif Why would an affiliate not be biased? For that matter when you promote your virus program do you compare it to others? I actually have, and I have had better results from nod32, but then again AVG is better then Norton. Most host affiliates do not even try the hosts they recommend. One example is a affiliate I did a post on recently called whybluehost, who are not even hosted on bluehost but hostgator servers. Big difference between promoting what use and what you don't use.

What do you think about CNET's hosting reviews? It seems like they might be, at least, partially honest?? What's your opinion?
BarbieRetiree 1 year ago
@BarbieRetiree CNET is a great source for tech information and articles, but beware of their forums. They are poorly moderated and moderators seldom respond when inaccurate or flame/hate speech is reported nor do they seem proactive when it comes to removing obviously false posts.
Anyone can post a review on CNET, but there is very little oversight. Get your tech info from CNET, but if you want honest hosting reviews CNET is not the place (in my opinion).

Hmm.
Don't get scammed into paying for it.
llwyth 1 year ago
@llwyth Wait you're saying people who pay for web hosting are getting scammed? Free hosting is unreliable and slow. Paid hosting is the way to go but make sure you don't choose a host that oversells. For example godaddy.
Conceptskatemedia 1 year ago
@llwyth The problem is not so much that they are affiliates, its the pretending to review and give a positive spin to mislead people into believing they are getting a good deal. The other problem is that more focus in spending on affiliates and advertising then actual spending on customer care.

biggest scammer - talking about hosting company - is Inmotion Hosting. We paid them $500 for 1 year of service. 1/2 year later when their server cannot handle our site, they send a "final notice". We canceled their service, and they keep the money - NO REFUND! this is the worst web hosting company we have used. They actually get paid for their incompetence. WOW!

1 Inmotion has a fake support forum where your posts never published if the question uncovers problems
2. They don't give you direct access to your WhoIs info.
3. their Joomla! script in Fantastico produces MySQL db with wrong collation
tritongre 1 year ago
@tritongre 3) That would probably be an issue with Fantastico and not the host. They have no control over how the script works.

Unlimited resources or big amount of resources for ridiculous prices are symptoms of overselling and overloading. Which means you will NOT get anything unlimited and your website(s) will end up in an overloaded server with another 2 thousands clients fighting for the server resources provoking server crashes and unstability.
Better search for virtualsplits

NinjaRunningWild 2 years ago 8
I suspected this 10 years ago when these kind of site started to flourish.
BTW, Could you give me a favor by telling me what's the soundtrack please ?

I'm with you! I am looking for a good web host to get companines to advertise on my site. I tried justhost. Its a bate and switch and misleading. You ask for one package and they give you another. and the say you get your money back, but they keep some. Even if you never used there site. They play with your sanity. Don't go there. Please help.

Thank you, you saved me from paying money to an unethical company and probably saved me from a slew of headaches. I almost went with the advice of one of the "top 10" web hosting reviews.

One of these days someone will think of a great way to put together a search engine that will search out sites that give good true information.
angelmarauder 3 years ago
im a newbie but SOOON to be a pro lol..but i was wondering if someone could answer this question "what is an affiliate link is it the same thing as a backlink?....like if u put a link on your site saying come over to there site is it that kind of deal??????
PotentialMarketing 3 years ago
Excellent video. I always thought there was something fishy whenever I saw all of the same "ratings" for each hosting company. Thanks for the enlightenment.
SpirtualGuide 3 years ago
hahaah u owned them with the affiliate links.

Very sad and very true! Thank you for posting this video! I'm in the process of trying to find a good website host.

Sad but true.
scammedby takes care of it.

Thanks 4 the video! I've went through searching for a good web host but...You are right !
JaimeMigMendoza 3 years ago
In the interests of objectivity, I don't make web hosting recommendations... but after you watch the video, you will have a better idea as to what to look for. Bottom-line: Who would you rather host with? A company that puts 70 cents out of every dollar into marketing? Or a company that puts 70 cents out of every dollar into service and better equipment? :) Marketing grows a business, but superior service keeps clients :)

Arrrgh!
Dot5 just caused me a great headache by shutting down my site because my podcast had "too much out-bound traffic"--this wasn't even CLOSE to the 15,000 GB bandwidth they claimed to offer me. What is a good service, folks! ...sigh. Okay. I got suckered by those sites, too.
l2xdog 3 years ago
Very sorry to hear about your experience with Dot5. Yikes. Best of luck to you. Would like to learn more about your pod cast. Email me plz.

I suspected this. Nice way by the way. Is there any place you can go to get an unbiased review because I am looking for a web host. I used one of these and ended up with Lunar pages and they are god awful.
brewcitybroker 3 years ago
Thanks for your comments. Sorry to hear about your experience with Lunar Pages. The best bet for hosting is to research well and avoid the so-called TOP 10 Hosts.
reviewsexposed 3 years ago
That "reasearch well" is where I need help-How? I don't know anyone personally that has a web site. Where should I look-anything you can point me to that gives a good unbiased review and/or summary?
brewcitybroker 3 years ago
I've used lp for about 3 years now, and I must say that I have not had a reason to complain yet. My site has never been down, I've never had a problem with various payment methods, my band width is admiral, the panel is solid also. For me, it's perfect. I have yet to have a problem with any site that I have designed on their servers...so, I dont know, maybe it's just my luck.
sunntzu 3 years ago
Use of affiliate links means nothing unless you can prove they are in the top10 only because of the affiliate link.
Theres nothing wrong with selling banner space on a site. You stil have to prove that its the top 10 / reviews that are $bought.
All youve done is speculate that these reviewers may be corrupt because they sell banner space or use affiliate links. Theres no proof.
By your logic, any site that sells banner space, or uses affiliate links, yet also has a top 10 list, is corrupt.
gravossupream 4 years ago
Hello!?? LOL Go to hosting-reviews-exposed (dot) com and you'll see that the #1 spot can be bought for $2,000. The #9 spot can be purchased for $600. Visit the site and look at the proof.
SO yes.... the top 10 spots can be bought!
Thanks for posting! I appreciate your comments!

Thanks for the video man, what web-host do you think is the best cause office-live sucks and i need a new one lol
matthames3 4 years ago 3

I just don't think we should throw them all under the bus though.
jsurej 4 years ago
""How do we know that the more they pay the better the placement?"" To answer your question, visit this site: (hosting-reviews-exposed (dot) com. The site URL is at the end of the video. The site has copies of emails from one of these so-called ratings sites. If you pay $2,000 you get #1 placement.... $1,000 for #2 placement, etc.... all the way down to the #9 spot for $600.
reviewsexposed 4 years ago
I don't get it? Every website has affiliate links. You have shorted these sites the service they are providing. Shopping for a host can be a big task when looking for what you want. They have created a place to search and compare different hosting plans and features in one easy interface. Some have databases with thousands. It's EASIER! But if you want to try and criminalize them with your police lights and big exposed sign go ahead. Spin on spin doctor. Spin on
jsurej 4 years ago 2
Thanks for the feedback, but you've missed the obvious question: Should the truth be for sale? Host ratings currently *are* FOR SALE and these so-called top-10 sites are misleading. "Ratings" are not based on objective information, nor are they based on the consumer experience; they are financially motivated. The hosting company that can pay the most, gets the best rating. That's the spin and that's the fact.
reviewsexposed 4 years ago
Jsurej, if you don't get it, I'll explain. The video shows how hosting company ratings are not based on facts, but instead based on dollars. The more you pay, the better your rating.
brunogriffin 4 years ago
What if Rosie O'Donnell won the Miss America Pageant because she bribed her way to the top. Can you honestly say that would be acceptable results? Cheating is cheating no matter how you want to "spin" it.
droneant 4 years ago
Thank you for doing this. Most people believe what anyone writes, and if Google lists it, then it must be real. WRONG. Exposed is perfect. Most of these companies on the top 10 are affiliates of each other, and therefore have thousands upon thousands of links. Yes it is true, if you have the money, you can get to the top of anything, even get a president elected, but on Google, you also need thousands of links to get to the top of these indexes.
LynnStrauch 4 years ago 2
Thanks for your positive feedback. You're absolutely correct!

I like hostmonster it seems good I see reviews for it and they seem to be good
would you suggest hostmonster
if not what would you suggest
ktvideomaster 4 years ago
Hostmonster and BlueHost are the *same* company. They sell the same essential product (hosting) -- but one is more expensive than the other (the support is the same, too, ie same group of people.) Personally, I would stay away any company that plays that sort of game. I would wager to say that ALL of the reviews you've seen about HostMonster are affiliate-oriented (or the review/rating is on a site that caters to the hosting industry).
reviewsexposed 4 years ago
Had a hosting with hostmonster - apparently our 15mb mysql database took up too much cpu - even though it was a standard openx install... they shut down the site without warning or contact until after the fact on a Sunday night at 6pm and after 40 minutes on hold said there was no way to get it back online until 8am the next morning... i begged to get the cpanel and ftp back which they did so i could go somewhere else.
insanely unprofessional.
sparau33 3 years ago 4
the size of your database in MB has nothing to do with CPU use.

Go with a UK host and pay ridiculous monthly fees for 1 Mysql database etc.Now i an confused
liquidplastic62 4 years ago
Generally speaking, US-based hosts advertise more simply due to competition, but seldom can they actually deliver on their promises over the long run. They've all crafted their offerings to be similar to the competition -- thus the same prices, same resources, etc. In my experience, you'll be much happier paying more for a quality U.K. host if the majority of your visitors are expected to be U.K. based. There is perceptible speed degradation with U.S.-based sites when accessed offshore.

Hosting-review dot com owns hostpapa dot com.
It's one thing to produce info about companies and make money, but it's an all new low if you are not only bias, but try to fool people to build you business.
New Low
lordweird 4 years ago

Again, well done.
zyonhost 4 years ago
Great video, yeah sadly the keyword "review" and review sites/landing pages generally all work around commission.
tagwelsh 4 years ago 3
It is only logical to go to pearsites that have reviews from actual customers.
F00dTube 4 years ago 5
Right -- excellent point. When you go to a reviews site, you really only see one-side of a web hosting company: the view from the affiliate who runs/owns the review site. Keep in mind however, that hosting reviews sites that contain affiliate links + reviwes from actual customers often censor and edit the reviews; they have tendency to keep the negative reviews and delete the positive reviews -- unless they are in reference to the companies the hosting reviews site is promoting.

Not surprised! Thanks for helping us through the maze of the Internet - your truthful info is so much appreciated! Keep us informed!

Awesome video. I always thought there was something very suspicious about all those "hosting review" sites.
Excellent work. They should do a news program about this.
brunogriffin 4 years ago 2
I think it foolish to use these sites as a method of finding hosting when they do not have the best interests of those that visit their site in mind, but rather the interest in modifying individual's responses on the basis of what will get them affiliate fees. The tobacco company had lots of advertising, but that did not mean they had consumer interests in mind.
droneant 4 years ago 2
Wow. What an eye-opener. I always thought it was weird that web host review sits promote the same companies over and over. I always though it was because they were the best hosts. I didn't know it was because the hosting companies were just paying more.
searchexpert 4 years ago 2
I've been through a lot of hosting by reviews, forums & surfing. Though what you say is quite true the best way is still to look at what are being offered whether they are on the list or not. Remember, a hosting that is capable of paying money to advertise would also happen to be a more stable and more well developed.
