@paintingglass probably had some Martin SP Phosphor Bronze Extra Light Acoustic (MSP4000), as that is what I usually have on there... but at a time I also used John Pearse 80/20 Bronze Acoustic (100XL). Both are great light strings for this small bodied guitar.
Yes indeed, I just brought my Seagull Coastline Grand home and looked it up to see who else has one. You play well, and I agree with you about the tone and the size, but for me, it's the neck. Godin makes outstanding necks. I also have a 5th Ave Kingpin, and it is so well made. I am a Godin fan for life, as this one is my 3rd. My other is an S-6. Great guitars, North American made and the $ is just right.
@MacTolver I remember Ian Anderson saying something to the effect of "I play this tiny little guitar... because it makes me look bigger." Personally, I really enjoy the tight and crisp sound, they body size, and it's good for someone like me with lean fingers. But then, some people hate it for the same reasons I love it. All comes down to personal preference and trying a bunch of instruments out to see what works.
nice guitar eh. i just purchased one today, has the pickup in it though as i play live for a living. i had been looking for a parlour guitar and stumbled on one of these in edmonton, canada on a holiday here. have owned seagull before, but dreadnought size. so glad i bought this, fantastic guitar and so cheap. great value. nice playing, great sound youve got there :)
That model has a sweet tone; Seagull knows how to make good quality sounding guitars. I had not seen nor heard that one before, thx.
Is it built after the form of an old Martin model? Was it Eric Schoenberg or Clarence White who played a small Martin, with a big sound? It also reminds me of Rick Ruskin's Santa Cruz, I think it is he had.
@yupitsdana The two are made of different woods and also extremely different in shape and purpose. The seagull is a purpose-built traditional 'parlour' style guitar with full length fretboard, whereas the Taylor is a shrunken Dreadnought, made for easy traveling.
I would imagine your answer would depend on what you'll use the guitar for. If it's for travel, the Taylor, if it's for playing, the Seagull.
If you can find a shop that has both, give 'em a test and see which one you like!
@yupitsdana Seagull guitars are amazing, hand made in Canada. This model has a solid cedar top. J&R.com has them new for $279 w/ free shipping, they also have open box ones for $237. I think this is the one to get if you want a travel sized parlor guitar which is a slightly different shape than a baby taylor.
love your playing, love the guitar. just a question, i know it has a cedar top..... does the guitar smell like cedar? i'm kind of sensitive to smells and i'm not crazy about the smell of cedar. is it noticeable?
On your question, the top is treated with a semi-gloss, although it's really more like an oil/stain, so the wood is very "natural". Still, I never really noticed the smell and I think I have a pretty sensitive nose!
i have a cedar top maritime cedar seagull gt and if you put your nose right on the sound hole you can really smell it, but i have noticed that it does make my room smell kinda like cedar,i like the smell but the room it's in the door is almost always shut so the smell lingers so even if the door is open for a little bit the smell goes away

Why go with grand instead of folk? or parlour instead of concert size?

Wow, you make that little parlour sing. Awesome original there. Can I ask what type and gauge strings those are?
Hopfrogg 2 years ago
Thanks! I usually have extra light gauge strings on the seagull. I think these ones are Martin SP extra lights...

would you recommend this guitar over a little martin lx1?

Pretty tough to beat a Seagull Grand if you're going to fingerpick!
