  • I answered my own question. Allmusic.com is helpful. This came from a compilation called Best of Mountain Stage Live Volume 3. I wonder if there is more Zevon live from this venue. The sound is amazing.

  • Hey, this is a completely different version than what's on Mr. Bad Example. That one was all guitars, this one's just piano and strings, neither of which were on the CD, I believe. Where did this come from?

  • Ghad dammnit! I just love Warren Z. & all his work!!!

  • @huntingdogowner I hope so,but I won't be holding my breath....be thankful for the inspiring music he wrote ;)

  • it's songs like this that make life beautiful. thanks warren, you just made my day... and not for the first time

  • "Man I wanna see that deal....."

  • Warren wrote the most beautiful tunes in rock. He was a rebel, a cynic, a genius, and best of all a great musician and performer. LIke my buddy who was taken at 44, way too early, so were you. The "Real Deal".

  • Amazing version, can't decide whether it's better than the album version or not, but it moved me to tears. With songs like these you'll never grow old.

  • Wikipedia says he died of cancer Bullsh**t I knew him he died of having to much fun.

  • Don't ever remove this song. That's all I can think of writing now....

I wish i could find susie lightning on youtube :)

  • Warren is to this day one of the greatest songwriters and singers ever to grace this earth..his songs have followed me for 30 years and I will never ever stop listening to this giant

  • Next time I would rather break than bend Great line for all the Jobs

  • What album is this from?

  • Anybody who has'nt realized Warren's amazing talent just simply has not gotten off the mainstream music and listened to his other work, RIP Warren

  • outstanding. thank you for this treasure.

  • Yah. Wonderful Bunch of Strangeness. Now My Eyes Are Open.

  • @612franklin Does That Make Sensishness? What Was He Talikin'..... Eyes Open, Grateful for the Strangeness.....

  • @612franklin Complicit: Mohammeds Radio, Accidentally, Like a Martyr.

  • Love this song. RIP Warren..love ya

  • lmao. this song was actually written by warren for the rugby team that i now play for (the renegades) the bugle call actually refers to a player on our team who is a major in the army, and he plays the bugle before every game

  • @expulsor thats really cool.Hold your head high and kick ass in Warrens honor! Go Renegades! That makes this song even more awesome for me now! Thanks man!

  • This guy was, most certainly, a Genius.

  • Damn. Warren always moves me.

  • yes

  • The song was on Warren's 1991 album, Mr. Bad Example.

As for the meaning, it depends on the person listening, same as weith most of his songs. For me, this song is similar to my own life story, I want to hold true to my beliefs in life. That's the impression I got from it, and it makes me wonder if that's what Warren wanted to say when he wrote it.

And that sometimes, the best sources of inspriation are people you'll never meet, but you feel you know them as though they were part of your soul.

  • I don't listen to warren everyday, but I'm so glad the days that I do.

  • kid rocks a fake he practically stole warrens song and changed the lyrics. seriously warrens the best

  • in light of recent events within our country does this song not touch you even deeper than it ever has before. what a classic peice of brilliance.

  • What album is this from? I've never heard it live before. Is that David Lindley on fiddle?

  • 'And the high school band played Dixieland, while they tore our tattered flags and banners down.'

  • Nice, very nice!!!!

  • rebel here too warren...just not as good as you

  • I miss you, Mr. Zevon.

  • I say we take it upon ourselves as true fans of the man to spread his music to the world. Do whatever you can to make sure everyone you know knows that a man named Warren Zevon was one of the greatest songwriters who ever lived!

  • Hey just be lucky we can have warren as our own and we don't heve to share with Brittinay nation

  • I like the original version of this song. But listening to this version is a truly moving experience.I would have loved to have been in the audience that night to witness this performance.Trully brilliant.

  • Wonderful song - fits me well!

  • Kid Rock sampled "Werewolves of London," which is the most-recognized of Warren's songs, but ironically one of his lesser songs. Look at the body of work, Accidentally Llke a Martyr, Desperadoes Under the Eaves, Muhammed's Radio, Mutineer, Lawyers Guns and Money....all were great songs, and that scratches surface.

  • yea thats what kind of sucks that werewolves is the only song u get to hear on the radio and its not even one of his top ten songs

  • Warren Zevon is a treasure !!!!!!!!!!

  • I'll admit.. I've heard a lot of his songs, but until a couple weeks ago, I had no idea who Warren Zevon was.

That being said, this is the video I listen to the most on YouTube these days. This song is just so bittersweet. You can hear his soul in this song.

  • Do yourself a big favor and listen to Life Will Kill You, one of the best albums ever. Zevon is a real rock and roll hero, he went down writing and recording. Most of the punks out there today have no idea what a real rebel is.

  • lost him 6 years ago today...go gracefully warren

  • Amen.

  • Just Beautiful !Deep tune.Thanks a bunch !

  • Love this song

  • What a renegade - how I miss the man. His music has been with me for so many years - what a gifted story teller.

  • I am with you, I grew up with Zevon in my home on the stereo. Tragic loss of another great, great poet.

  • What a great talent. I think he saved his best for the last. He's a hero of mine along with one of his cronies HST but Zevon chose a classier way out.

  • Wow what a tune. This guy was wired to do things his own way with a real knack for unconventional style and melody. Thanks Warren, for leaving those of us still living with your legacy. You have made the world a better place.

  • I love this song. :')

  • You want to hear a funny, true story?: My manager was at a party and wound up having a threesome with two lesbians, and in the process earned the nicname "the sandwich" so i told him "Well, enjoy every sandwich" he looked at me and laughed.

  • haha

  • I have listened to this brilliant performance by Warren and the unknown violin player who is also very talented,at least 100 times over the past few days.I wan't to get the CD that this performance was taken from.Any advice please.

  • Oops, meant hit reply, not downvote ! lol

I believe the song is on "Best of Mountain stage Vol. 14". Check amazon

  • A late reply, so you might already have found what you were looking for, but it is also featured on the CD "Mr Bad Example".

  • That is incurrect. Mr. Bad Example has the STUDIO version.

    This is a live version.

  • I meant "Best of Mountain Stage Vol. 3" not Vol. 14. LOL

  • I have that! It's a great compilation from a great radio show.

  • What a beautiful song.Warren was an amazingly talented man.He deserved a better fate.

  • He knew what his fate was. He partied ALL the time, and he loved it. I think Warren Knew how he was gonna' die from day one - He'll sleep when he's dead.

  • He marched to a different beat. What an amazing talent this man was. God only made one for this lifetime. We miss you Warren

  • Zevon wrote this for our rugby Club in Atlanta. Email me is you would like the story told by an old teamate.

We will sleep when we are dead.

Chris Clark, Renegade Rugby Football Club.

  • last friday i knew one zevon song, on saturday i heard roland ..., now i am searching and can't believe i've missed this talented man. awesome reflective music. god bless.

  • Yeah, this guy is WAY under-recognized, and it's a shame that all anyone remembers him for is 'Werewolves of London'.

(Not that there's anything wrong with that song, it's just that he wrote so much other great stuff)

  • Songs like "Accidentally Like A Martyr" and "Desperadoes Under the Eaves" should be played every day. Once you hear them you just can't stop. Warren's CD Anthology goes everywhere with me.

  • @BullRun1861 I'd add The Indifference of Heaven, MY Rides Here, Hasten Down the Wind and now with the destruction of the Gulf Run Straight Down with David Gilmore on lead.

  • @BullRun1861 I know I listened to The Indifference of Heaven every day for at least a month and all during the BP oil spill I listened to Run Straight Down with David Gilmore backing Zevon. Zevon was such a full package writer sing guitar and piano player and a wicked sense of humor. I miss him and Hunter Thompson alot.

  • @BullRun1861 Interesting choice of songs. They might be the first two I'd cite when arguing (as I often have) that Zevon's song titles were more interesting and inspired than most artist's song lyrics. "The Indifference of Heaven" is up there too.

  • Pick up "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead," his anthology. An enormous but underpublicized talent.

  • One of his best songs, in my opinion, is Studebaker. it was unreleased up until last year when his son Jordan covere it for the tribute album enjoy every sandwhich and then Zevon;s vrsion was released on preludes, a cd of unreleased songs and alternate versions of songs. check it out it's awesome

  • One of my favourite Zevon songs. Thanks so much for uploading it!

  • He shal be ZEVON !!!

  • after listening to this song i hereby declare a new genre of music undefinable by another means..zevony or zevonish

  • The greatest artist of my life time, may all the blind scumbags of the rock and roll hall of fame rot in hell and yet they induct scumbag rappers and leave out this Great talent, Warren will and always be the greatest Genius of our time !!!!!!!!!

  • I'm a Rengade i've been a Rebel all my days. Warren you picked a great woman when you married Crystal Wildage may be gone but you live in my heart forever, thank you Crystal for telling the story.

  • They still say someday the south will rise... man, I want to see that deal... Genius

  • Check out "Frank & Jesse James."

  • This makes me cry when I listen to it.

  • wow, what a song pure quality mrof a master writer

  • Does James Lee Burke know about this? Something tells me he probably does, if not, he would love it!1

  • Man, he was great...Awesome words in EVERY song. Every song with meaning. Listen to Mohammeds radio- he's talking about the price of gasoline in the 70's...so wise...

  • Hail to the Gladiator or the heart, he shal be ZEVON !

  • rip warren, paul n passed a couple days ago. he had a pretty good run, you were stolen from our lives too early. love you

  • "We ain't seen no reconstruction here,

Just the scorched earth all around,

And the high school band played dixieland,

While they tore our tattered flags and banners down."

Wow. Such an amazing master of words. RIP great one.

  • this is a very sad song, but that is what makes it absolutly god-like

  • Rst in piece WArren Zevon!

  • Hate that fukking cancer Rest in piece

  • Warren, Jerry, Johnny die & the world goes completly insane. Coincidence? I think not.

  • I don't know if all is lost with Warren's passing as has been suggested, but we sure lost a master trubidor that's a fact.

    R.I.P. Warren

  • That was wonderful, you did a great job, gave Warren Zevon some respect that he deserves

  • I have only one thing to say about Warren Zevon. THe world is done we lost it all. RIP Oh Master Trubidor. Rest well and know we cry for you.

  • what a great song i knew warren zevon for the fantastic werewolves of london but this song is different gravey i need to hear more of this mana sad loss

  • Kneeling down in the dust by the side of the interstate...I am a renegade...I've been a rebel all my days...

    RIP Warren

  • That is probably my all time favorite line from Warren. "Kneeling down in the dust by the side of the interstate.." and I don't know why. I think it is because of the way it flows. And it is so descriptive. The best.

  • yeh, its sad isnt it, it sort of makes me cry

  • this is too beautiful. EES!

  • Thank you so much for this! It's hard to pick one favorite Warren song, but this is definitely in the top 10!

  • I happened to come across a copy of the song, and I knew it wasn't on YouTube. I'm glad to help other Zevon enjoy this beautiful song!

  • I love this guy.

  • "I don't wanna grow old gracefully,

I don't wanna go till it's too late,

I'll be some old man in the road somewhere,

Kneeling down in the dust by the side of the interstate,

    i am a renegade,

I've been a rebel all of my days"

The greatest lyricist ever; no one can hold a candle to him.

  • "I'm no linguist, but I belive Warren Zevon may be the only man in the history of human communication to use the word brucellosis in a song."-David Letterman

  • Whatta' voice!!!

  • Zevon wrote this for our rugby Club in Atlanta. Email me is you would like the story told by an old teamate.

We will sleep when we are dead.

Chris Clark, Renegade Rugby Football Club.

  • Beautiful stripped-down version. Nice one Warren. RIP

  • Great performance of one of my favorite songs. Thanx! Any idea of the performance date or place?

  • from the show Mountain Stage in 1991, I believe.
