whoooooooweeeeeeeeee! one of my favs...all you younguns should study guys like this...also buddy rich. what ever happened to real technique anyway? its all double bass and screamo now.
My man is Max Roach, his timing is incredible! And also he is soft/sparse on the cymbals, especially on the rivet, which can be annoying tendered wrongly!
All these cats are good, but the best is my cat, Ears.
When you hear my cat Ears jamming, you really know you're listening to something special and wonderful.
All these guys would fail to impress in front of the massive talent of Ears. Ears knows drums and he jams like there's no tomorrow.
What's wrong with you people? How can millions of adoring fans testify to the superior technique of my cat, Ears, and you just sit there doing nothing?
Check out how Elvin watches Max during the solo... Elvin listed Max many times as one of his idoles and influences... Interesting! Thanks for posting this.
The drums are Italian made Meazzi 'Hollywood' President model. I can not tell for sure, but I think his floor tom has a tymp pedal. Billy Cobham also used them and a few others. (I even heard that Art Blakey played them for a while). They were way ahead of their time. Hollywood also put out a Max Roach model as well as a cross over electronic model. Really great sounding drums.
also look on youtube at ' meazzi tronicdrums ' for another set that Max Roach used. The drums have guitar like pick ups in them and lead into an amp and speakers. Italians were great instrument builders in the 60s.
white boiz shut up these catz is were itz at buddy a legend tho i ait sayin shit about him but these cat got soul and style real brathazz ole skool so......digg
They are all monster drummers, each in his own style. I admire Jones' complexity, but as for solo's I really love Max's geometrical style. He can lose you in two bars, playing his magnificent triplets. To me his best solo's are on the two takes of 'Kim', on a Charlie Parker Verve album 'The Genius of Charlie Parker' in 1953. It's so beautifully simple, it beats everything he later did, even with Clifford Brown. It's like a combination of Philip Glass and Mondrian.
there is hundreds of great drummers why even argue over who is better then who just listen enjoy and learn. but in the end the only thing that matters is the music the only thing that matters is for to go out there and make music
Why argue? Buddy could do more things technically, powerfully & speedwise than anybody else; Max had more taste & finesse;Blakey had great presence, groove, and consistency;Elvin was able to come up with the perfect complements; all the greats can do something that nobody else can; look at Zig from the Meters, you can argue that his funk is easier than jazz, but nobody can play funk like that;or look at some of the metal drummers, they can do stuff that none of these jazz greats could do.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
And you are the protector of the divine drum doctrine, aren't you? Don't be silly. Buddy's time, technique, spontaneous phrasings, hit hat, brushes, limb independence, big bang conduction and mastery and overall genius is as high (or higher) than anyone else's. I just laugh at people like you. You're always misleading "great body expressions" to what is REALLY being played. When one stops to consider what is BEING PLAYED, there is no one on Buddy's level. He could play anything and has proven it
Wrong, asswipe. The drum, being the very first non vocal instrument in the history of humankind, was actually invented as a way for people to communicate with each other.
So, if you can't dance to a certain music, it's not valid music?
Also, MANY people did indeed dance to Buddy's early big bands, to Harry James, to Count Basie, all the while Buddy was in the drum chair of these bands.
Tuning has come a long way since then. But, that was the popular sound. Also, mic technology has advanced enough as to allow the observer to hear the full range of the drum.
I said in one of the other videos that I thought Elvin was drunk or high. Then I got to this video and do you see how Elvin looks? He looks like he is gonna pass out! Maybe it's just me, but right when I seen him playing I knew there was something not right. Note to all the young players, stay away from the drugs and if you drink, do it after the gig is done....Max looked great though it was nice to see him using traditional grip.
The standard of excellence set by Buddy Rich has never been acheived from anyone else.Max, Elvin, Philly,Art all had their own wonderful styles and ideas, but lets face it back in the day even the top musicians like Dizzy all KNEW and said Buddy was by FAAAR above everyone else.
listen to his collaborations with Dizzy. His wrists, techniquue speed, power and class was unequaled then and even to this day with super drummers like Thomas Lang, Virgil Donati, Dennis Chambers and Vinnie Coliuta
I can sorta see that. Buddy and Dizzy were the "showiest" in their field. Buddy was the fastest, but any bebop fan could argue that what Elvin or Max did certainly made up for that by having a LOT more taste, and more style and creativity. Same with Dizzy. Clifford or Chet or Donald Byrd could be said to be more creative.
I disagree.Buddy definetly isn't lame.He was musical,he played with soul,he was wery dynamic and he was also creative. He proabably was the greatest. But that doesn't mean he should be the only guy everyone listen's to.I enjoy listening to these three legends and a dozen of other greast drummer's as I enjoy listening to Buddy.
Look at "buddy rich stick tricks." He displays more innovation and playfulness. I have no idea and can't compare these greats. Though your bias is not unjustified, it isn't prime either.
Buddy was a total asshole. He was extremely good, but he was an asshole. His bands normally hated him.
Innovation and playfulness is more like trying to play the audience. It's not real, like these guys. I know for a fact Elvin and Art play from their hearts. Not to act all fancy. ;)
I feel ya. I'm glad any of them were around. It's true, I've seen some performances from Art and another guy... the one max roach dedicated some hi-hat only performance to.. and they make me sweat. Buddy is pretty sweet and I hear his influence in squarepusher and other modern electronic samplists that I like. I'm slowly getting back to the cool shit.
but. innovation and playfulness are signs of playing yourself, you don't need an audience (or rather need an audience not) 2 make such fun.
VideomanSnow- Buddy was not an asshole. He was arrogant, but he had good reason to be. An asshole wouldn't have continued playing in big bands long after big band died out. Buddy played lots of shows at colleges and high schools near the end of his career/life- obviously not the highest paying gigs. Paying a big band isn't cheap and Buddy LOST money trying to introduce young people to jazz. I definitely wouldn't say Buddy was more innovative than these guys but he wasn't an asshole.
Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Art Blakey, Tony Williams, Kenny Clarke, & Philly Jo Jones are THE greatest jazz drummers of ALL-TIMES, but if any brotha in their right mind had to put a crown on the head over all these great masters of the drums, no doubt Fletcher Henderson would be crowned king.
And if I understand correctly, it was Gene Krupa who bowed out in a competition between he and Henderson and conceded defeat at the Apollo Theatre in a Harlem nightclub which Henderson was crowned "king".
You're welcome! Many of the people on here have never heard of Chick Webb, but man, he was an absolute MONSTER. I remember when I first heard him -- I was totally shocked!!
