I just learned this song on vocals, guitar, and bass. The bass line weirded me out at first, but I see now he's playing A minor over the C maj 7th chord. It makes sense to me now. I never thought I'd learn more music theory from a song that came out when I was 3 years old!
I was in high school 71 -75. The music and the times were pure magic. At the time it seemed as if those days were going to last forever. It's funny how we see things with so much more clarity as we get older but I feel like I somehow lost something along the way. This music brings back some wonderful memories and feelings.
I'm a 39 year old Black male from the inner city of Detroit -- I remember this song on the radio as a child around 5 years of age --- the melodies from this song used to beautifully haunt me as I long for tunes like this. I thank my mama for itroducing my young ears to not only jazz and Motown soul/funk --but also songs by America, Kansas, and Bread ---my homeboys always trip out on me---they just don't recognize good music-- thanks for the post chissykim- Peace
@tabawk2010 I am also a black male and it sounds as if we grew up quite the same way, musically. I grew up in a household filled with the sounds of jazz,r&b,pop and rock. From the Beatles to The Jackson 5, Elton John,James Brown, Led Zepplin,The Stylistics,America, Kiss, Diana Ross, etc, etc. My musical taste is quite eclectic thanks to my parents and siblings. Much like our parents, all parents should introduce their children to all music [the good/classic stuff]. Music is a wonderful gift.
E viva o pop americano dos anos 70, mas não esqueça: "Oz nunca deu nada para o Homem de Lata que ele já não tivesse feito" Assim é o pop. Mas o grupo América sabia fazer e Tin Man me passa uma alegria contagiante...
One of the best intros ever. This song has it all. Melody, rhythm, bass, piano, acoustic guitar, interesting and deep meaning lyrics. Total package. It makes you reflect and yet it is very cozy.
@greatbigahole you are absolutely right pop music today is total crap. There are hardly any real musicians getting the fame they deserve these days. The majority of the world has definitely lost something unique and creative and I hate that.
Thank you for this brilliant song!, i have the desire when i hear this to ride an Austin Healey 3ltr with wind in my hair down the motorway on a summers day!
I was born in '69, so was a kid when this came out in 1974. I remember hearing it through the late '70s. Can't say I noticed it...just always kinda "knew" it. It's really wild when years later as an adult, you re-discover it, and how beautiful it is.
Pop music changed so much since, it's hard to believe this was a Top 10 hit. We've lost something. It has to do with pop being aimed at a more mature audience back then, and real musicians with real talent using real instruments.
I remember about 5+ years ago my dad always used to play this on the CD in the car eventually it embedded itself in my head and to this day i can appreciate real music for what it is rather than all the crap coming out these days
This song was, and is still cool. I don't really listen to secular stuff anymore. But the dude Peaks converted to CHRISTianity, so, I know I'll see him in heaven soon enough. Peace, guys and gals, and know that believe it or not, there is a person way cooler than even this ubercool song and HIS name is JESUS.
Only if today's generation, generation of baggy pants and rap/hip hop and alternative listeners known as 'Generation Y' know what great and talented music is. Most likely they have heard less of these songs than those who grew up with memories of them.
america always made such beautiful music,,such great harmonies,,too bad we will never hear them do more together, now that dan peak passed away in july,,thank you sooo much dan,,r.i.p.
I don't know who you are chrissykim but I cant begin to tell what this music means to me yesterday today and more . The neat thing about these america songs; I was so in love with their music, kinda worshipped it. I thought I could never play it (guitar). I'm so happy now for the most part I can. Thanks again much
Saw them last night live at the Coach House. Awesome show and floods of memories!

When he sings "And Cos never was the reason for the evening" I completely disagree. I was a big fan of The Cosby Show and I watched it every evening.

Oz never did give nothing to the tinman that he didn't, didn't already have.
It is so weird listening to music where they actually think about their lyrics before they sing them. I was negative fourteen when this song came out.
