He's got everything in there--funk, country, blues, vaudeville, rock, chitlin circuit showmanship, just damned great musicianship and the ability to SWING!
i had crawfish boil at my home and gate was there and being polite as i am i offerd him a tooth pick and he said no thanks i dont have any teeth i was so embarrassed that was the firt of many times of hanging out
no he passed away after Hurricane Katrina 2005 in his hone town of Orange Texas he lived in Slidell LA just 25 min. from NEW ORLEANS we had hung out several times he was and alway will be GREAT !!
Clarence could pick up anything and play the hell out of it. He always had kickass horns with him too. Tried to give him a check for a signed cd and he looked at me and said, "Ya know I don't take no checks" I had no cash and I understand why he wouldn't but damn......I will listen to him til I die.
Soooooooooooooo! Funky! & natural! Swingin' lettin' it loose.......gotta love that. You can't fake this spirit. Folks we're certainly gettin' their money's worth on this night.
i knew him, but i'm ashamed, i've really been sleeping on him. great original guitar player! chicken plucking tones, and so many more in a effortless tight groove. The band is tight for sure, but tight like compact, dense. comic and serious at the same time he should be raised up and praised. Damn, it's just so funky!
"Dollar Got The Blues" Is as relevant today as it was then, I knew "Gatemouth" was a virtuoso musician playing several instruments,
but a political song writer. A candidate should use this song as their theme. Check out his Song called "sometimes i slip" on iTunes, TOO COOL FOR WORDS!!!!!!!!

Wow this is Good when Im High yall, Gatemouth got me llistening deep and my mind transform, I was raised Houston born 12th Ward New Orleans, so you got a prblm wit dat I suggest you get at me
The man loved this song and all the jazz lick that go with it. What great touch on the guitar. True Gatemouth style. Great Performer. Louisiana Born...Texas Raised. The best of blues...one of the first artist to use the capo. Thanks for sharing this video. Gatemouth a class act on and off stage. Port Arthur, TX Loves you man. RIP
That tone! I love the pinched notes -- I guess only bare fingers can do it. Love the voice too. -- He was hilarious as an old man -- you should have heard him rip on hip-hop -- he called it "a bunch of damn fools jump'n around like chickens with their heads cut off -- it's like a disease!!!"
Got his autograph right infront of me above my desk. Spent the day with him whilst assisting a photographer during early nineties blues festival in New Orleans. Hung out at his house, played his guitar, great guy. Best live show at the festival. No one could touch him. Even BB.
I "discovered" Clarence at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar in Jackson Hole, WY in 1975. A co-worker in the Teton Park said that he was packin' 'em in, so we all piled in the station wagon and had to stand up. They were even standing out on the sidewalk. Before, after and between, even in the afternoon- Clarence would be selling cassette tapes. We hung on his every phrase, every move. You could see how he was very firm and business-like with his band, too.
the reason people dont remember him being this good is because he changed his style in weird directions as he got older, you should all get the album "original peacock recordings", its even better then this
Son of a bitch, I didn't remember him being this good. I should have payed attention more to him growing up. This is some of the best groove I've heard. And that tone he got from using his fingers. Man!!!!
Fantastic! Thank you.

Caught him again in late '79 at Dooleys in Tempe, still selling his own tapes and vinyl.
(yeah, I got my LP autographed, Yeah, I'm cool)
The man's stature is legendary; our grief and loss can barely be imagined.
