jko3139: that water tasting like metal, didn't just taste like it. It most probably was waste from y'er chemical and nuclear plants upstream. Aahh, halcyon days......
Note the spelling. If you can find this in an old pharmacopia, it will be spelled 'Poke Sallet'. And will note that the root has medicinal properties as well as the berries (yes, the pizen part).
Mustard Gas comes from Mustard Greens and Bamboo is poison unless it is boiled twice in sperate water. Being a Navy Brat who lived mainly in the city, every day I miss my Grandma who grew up in the Ouachita Mountains dragging me along, lto show me how she did when she was coming up. I even miss the very cool iron tasting well water we would drink after going for walks in the woods.
@LocoRico89 No noo noooo. The berries are mildly toxic, as is the stem when it starts turning purple. My great-grandma lived well into her 80's and during spring and early summer, she'd pick the tenderest, greenest tops and eat it as a salad green. And if you have to parboil it twice to get the pizen out, you're picking the wrong leaves!
heard this on 810 am wkcn from crozet,va(out of business in the mid1990s)in 1987 and liked it.found 45 in 1989.it could of been lost forever if nobody kept this great song going.thanks for posting it.
I was listening to a Blues show on Jazz 88.3FM out of Newark, NJ, one day in the car when I heard this wonder.. Kudos for a great song and much thanks for the post and for the station for playing this.
It's not throat-clearing. I can make that noise, and it does the opposite of clearing your throat. Do it a few times and you will need to clear your throat.
I can't pin the month but I'm sure it was well before July '69 when Jimmy Rabbitt jumped all over this record over KRLA. He was probably the deejay who broke it in the Los Angeles market.
all i can say is, ain't nothin sexier than a damn southern man - i could listen to him read the want ads and just want to tear it up? damn, darlin. whooooo
does a very good couple'a Howlin' Wolf ahwooo's too (in a very natural way to this song) ..show's the influence.. This is a great song ... Elvis did some good efforts (early on) to cover original blues artists, said he "goosed it up" and always gave credit (especially to his main influence Arthur Crudup) but his fine voice often lacked the soul felt and heard within the originals.
I was looking for the song Groupie Girl by Tony Joe White, can't find it here on YT. Only covers, wich are oké, but I do prefer the original, wich is awesome. Would or could anyone upload it please? Would make me a happy dutch lady ;-)
... This is NOT Motown , and I don't think anyone ever shoved Frank Sinatra in the dirt or anywhere for that matter ... Tony Joe White is a swamp KING , he is GREAT !
Just to clarify--: He SOUNDS like he's clearing his throat, after drinking too much or smoking too much, etc., at certain points, but, whatever he's doing it's a raw and cool sound, is what I meant!! He did it rhythmically//musically, whatever he was doing.
:o) ....But, he didn't do it before every verse. I was exaggerating, just a bit,
@maryspinker WELL, THANKFULLY, I, have no MEN in My life, since, I am a dude and totally straight!! :o)
But, since, you brought it up, 'Cheese and Rice', Eh!? Really!? Is that some kind of kinky sexual reference that I am missing and//or is that some kind of Louisiana humor!? :o) "Awww, Tony's got that 'Cheese and Rice' Syndrome". That sounds like a guy that might've got a yeast infection of the mouth from "eating" from the wrong women!! :o)
This is a very cool upload, for people not familiar with Tony. This version of his song, is severely superior to Elvis' cover (that most have probably heard, who know Elvis).
You can't improve on this version of Tony's song. This is Pure Tony!!
Pure Gold!! This is probably My favorite performance
Tony Joe White wrote Polk Salad Annie and Rainy Night in Georgia, both in the same week. He was driving a dump truck here in Louisiana and was rained out for the week, so he spent the whole time in a motel room, where he wrote both songs. Check your copyrights on these song. Jerry Reed didn't write Polk Salad Annie. Sorry.
Great stereo sound...Being an Elvis. fan thats when i first heard the song..I then tracked down the original by T J White.but my old 45 has now passed its sell by date.
You just can't sit still to music like this!
Good stuff! Thanks Tony, YOU ROCK!

@VEVOElvisPresley LOL, I should hope it wasn't "bad" since had Tony Joe White never made a hit out of it, you never would have heard Elvis sing it.

i'll take the elvis version over this anyday!
JAARNO88 1 year ago
@JAARNO88 When Elvis covers a song, usually, he immediately claims it as his own (like 'My Way')
He shoved Frank Sinatra into the dirt with HIS more emotional, faster version), but, on a song like this,
it's just, I think Tony's dirtier/rougher version, fits the lyrics much better. Most times, Elvis nailed
and claimed any song he covered. But rare times, he missed the mark and added
nothing to the song, really. This was one of those times. He also missed the
mark on Tony's 'For Ol' Times Sake'.
