im getting so sick and tired of this whole "is it worth it" crap. Srsly, america, do me a favor. Skip the next war, and spend that money to fund nasa for the next century...
Once people start asking "how much", they're useless. TARP, the bank bailout program, costs more than the total 50 year budget of NASA. There isn't enough money in space programs.
We dont spend jack shit on exploration and science we spend more on hollywood then we do on what really matters. And no Kim Kardashian doesnt matter at all...
Americans are not spending enough on lip balm. I am greatly in favor of robotic/satellite exploration of space. A lot more bang for the buck compared to human exploration, and the missions can happen decades sooner because the risk is only monetary rather than human life.
@KreatorRage and now that federal law is going to pass to make the growers and dispensaries of medical marijuana illegal. you know, so that america can't easily tax the marijuana but give more power and money to the mexican drug cartels.... fucking smart
@KreatorRage 21 billion? They spend a lot more than that on the war. They spend 20 billion on air conditioning alone in Iraq (no, I'm not being facetious, they literally do... look it up). That air conditioning bill is about 2 or more billion dollars more than NASA's budget all year.
I love how Neil pretty much made the entire monetary argument pointless. The two are comparable. We spend more than 3.3 billion dollars in 1 year on a luxury like lip balm, and people wanna complain when we can spend 3.3billion dollars on a supposed "luxury" mission to SATURN, 930 BILLION MILES from earth, in 1 YEAR for ONLY 3.3 billion dollars... People are so narrow minded. It's more than a century off i'm sure, but eventually we'll realize we cant stay on earth forever.
@FluryofFlames its 3.3 billion divided by 12 years actually, amounting to about 275/300 Million a year to be more precise...but u were completely right concerning the monetary argument.
We seem to enjoy management by crisis here. We spend so much effort on things that are important and urgent, and things that are urgent and not important but give little effort to the things that are important but not urgent. Not giving any energy or care or thought to our future will surely send us spiraling into extinction.
To quote Will Ferrel in Land of the Lost -"Matt Lauer can Suck it".
And so can anyone who thinks science isn't worth investing in...
The fact that Matt even asked whether a monumentous, years-long space exploration mission is worth what we spend in 10 days on war speaks volumes about our messed up priorities in this country.

As odd as it sounds, the cold war pushed humanity into overdrive, now people are satisfied with their static existences. How dull we've become.

It's not just lip balm and Americans that he's referring to. People in general spend far too much money on idle-minded indulgences.
