  • What has happened to this breed? This is horrible--they all look as bad as the Big Lick TWHs. Spurring the horse at every stride, rides completely crooked, the horse clearly strung out & struggling--THAT is what wins a championship? I've also heard they're now soring these horses. I am sickened by the gaited horse industry in general. The lack of education and proper horsemanship astounds me. Thanks, Miller Ranch--I've been to your ranch many times, & I have seen how TRUE MFTs should ride.

  • I'll admit I've been out of the foxtrotter showring for awhile, but this video alarmed me. I havent seen hunched up poor equitation like that since the monkeys rode the dinosaurs on The Flintstones........the first place horse was obviously miserable, nice pinning of the ears, and gotta love the spurring he got every stride. The cantering made me cringe. Way to ruin a great breed.

  • And Grand Central's rider looks like he is mentally retarded or a cripple that was pulled out of a wheelchair. or maybe he is talking on the phone without hands

  • This whole video makes me cringe...........

  • Its really sad how absolutley fantastic all these horses are, but the riders look like frogs straddling horses. WERE IS THE EQUATION?!?! Honestly. You're at the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP!! Could you please present your horse? Please sit up, stop flopping your legs about like kangaroos, quit throwing your hands around, roll your shoulders back and RIDE. I swear to you. Its people like this that make people say "Gaited horse people can't ride...." Fabulous horses.... Terrible riding.....

  • @FavoriteLilFoxtrot, agreed. How pathetic, how painful for the horses, especially the first placed horse??? WTf was that!

  • @AnimalLeftist I've ridden MFTs and TWH all my life and never once have I rode with such poor equitation. People watch my videos of me on my foxtrot mare and they're like "Who knew gaited horse people could ride!" Because I present a horse. Isn't that the point of a horse show? To SHOW your horse? These people are ruining the reputation of the gaited horse world. People need to learn to ride correctly before they ever put on a pair of spurs, touch the staff of a whip, or show a horse.

  • Grand central is the ONLY horse getting the spurred sh*t of him...watch it. Everytime the rider hits his l-o-n-g spurs into his side Grand Central's head jolts up. I'd like to see how he rides without spurs. In fact spurs should be banned in this one. Horse with the natural and spirit ability should win.

  • grand central obviously had something done to him to make him bob his head like that. i cant believe he won! thats an outrage!

  • @painthorselover101 Probably a mint in his mouth!

  • Sorry. that poor horse ( grand central) is NOT relaxed.. its OBVIOUS.

I feel sorry for him. And you can plainly see that he would not be a comfortable ride. Are we forgetting what thesehorses were bred for? For comfort.. NOT to please the whims of the human ego. We are having a harder time finding GOOD riding horses these days.. in part due to this show ring "circus"

  • your lying if you say that is what it’s all about cause I know for fact as a 2 year old in the field or just under saddle with a little refining he did not move that stiff with a head shake that’s not even in rhythm with his step and a uncollected head. That was rode into him. I think this video is a sad display of potential breeders as well as riders need to remember the “celebration” is about the horse not the garland and doing anything to get it.

  • had he not been force into overzealous head shake with nose sticking out and pushed out stiff rhythm I have nothing against this stallion in fact I think very much of the art of his breeders creating such a fine display of breeding. But you cannot honestly look at him compared to every other horse in the ring that night as well and the past few decades of champions and tell me the gait he displayed was the natural foxtrot. I don’t care if you’ve been to every show since the beginning,

  • I think that grand central has all the rights to represent the mft breed, from far superior breeding and flawless conformation and natural rhythm. That stallion on his own I believe could and did deserve a grand championship but I do think it’s rather sad the amount of hours and training that went in to altering his natural movement to over accentuated what he clearly has naturally. it would have been much more deserved

  • In my opinion, Grand Central has a subtle lameness in the left, hind hock. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't have a bone chip floating around in there. Look at the flexion of the right hind hock vs the left. He also swings his left under him and resists moving it. The exaggeration of the head nod, coupled with him resisting being on the bit also suggests pain. As for the rider, you would never catch me riding like that. I also wouldn't let the guy ride my horses like that, or ever.

  • My comment is about the video production itself. Very nicely done. I was able to see the gait in detail especially when it was set to slow motion. I was impressed with the different angles of the gait that were captured. Too bad the photographer and video producer wasn't credited. Only suggestion is next time I would like to see it in HD.

  • He is slumped forward with toes down and constantly spurring someone needs to give him a sobriety check before he enters the show ring next year he IS NOT a horseman but the horse is great just needs a better rider

  • foxtrot@mfthba.com

  • This is why I have let my membership lapse. I don't want to be associated with something that is so horribly wrong and looks just plain stupid. I have my horse boarded where there are no other gaited horses and people always comment on how cool my horse looks and how they can't believe I don't bounce all over the place when he trots while I ride bareback. That is what is all about people. We have a great breed here and stuff like this will ruin it

  • Grand Central is the only horse that i know of that is as good as what Travelin' Suzie was. He wasn't as good but he was REALLY close. The people on here that said Tom Williams keeps his head down. That is becuase he looks between Grand Central's ears that a true rider. Also, he bounces because thats the way he rides and if you have a problem with that then take it up with the rider not with the internet. Happy Riding

  • @TravelinSuzie117 Nice comment from one he was not born when Suzzi was in the ring. What more you can say, look between the ears and bounce around. You better ride a bike and stay away from riding a horse.

  • @TravelinSuzie117 Phillips, I thought you were on the list the other day stating that you liked to see riders with good equitation??? I'm confused. I don't think that a good rider would have no equitation like TW has. And bounce all over the saddle like a sack of taters. And I never seen Suzie but if she looked like GC she was not foxtrotting!!! As GC is not foxtrotting! He is too ROUGH!

  • @TravelinSuzie117

I do think the argument that Grand Central is doing a long trot is not a strong case for the criticsl. Thanks to the slo mo provided it is doubtful Grand Central has three feet off the ground which can certainly be one element of a long trot. It's borderline at best but I'd go with the judges here who don't have the benefit of slow motion. it's disappointing so few points are placed on equitation. Can ignoring poor equitation be acceptable in a World Championship?

  • Why does Tom Williams keep his head down and never look up or ahead during his entire ride? And why doesn't he sit up straight in the saddle? At least Geno was sitting up straight, and looking ahead straight. And it looks pretty evident that Tom was getting a rough ride.Look at him bouncing, that says it,IMO.

Not every "show" foxtrot is smooth, however perfect. We own a long striding wonderful well -bred MFT gelding, and,I'll tell you: his foxtrot, although executed well,is ROUGH.

  • I have two foxtrotter and I love them! I've never been into showing because of what I see in that video. The rider's posture is terrible and I don't know how a horse can preform well when his rider is so impeding him. He appears to be continually spurring his horse and I don't know how that makes the gait a "natural foxtrot". I though the other horse and rider pairs looked more relaxed, natural and comfortalbe and if that's not what a foxtrotter is about, I don't know what it is about.

  • unable to watch all the video, but noticed horse's shown in slow motion were mostly in some kind of fox trot gait. The excessive speed and poor equitation make the ride look rough. Would like to see the owner or poster of this video show some shots that show the horse with ALL 4 feet completely suspended, without a foot touching the ground, during the fox trot gait. That, indeed, proves the horse is hard or long trotting! The pulling the horse up in the air at the canter looks silly.

  • okay, from reading all of these comments, sounds like you're all on the same page as me! Let's get something started! BACK to a SMOOTH GAIT! ENOUGH OF THIS NONSENSE! BOYCOT this CRAP!

  • I've had the pleasure to see number 571 in person. He is a beautiful mover. He shows what a true foxtrotter is about.

  • Ok I may be speaking out of turn, however when I first moved to the ozarks 7 years ago I wasn't at all impressed with the MFT now I have 2 of them and love them but the association needs to better police the breed standard if they are supposed to be smooth gaited then judge accordingly let's not have two separate breed standards one for show and one for trail and everything else.

  • This horse is putting on a show, listen to the crowd. To bad the rider makes the horse look bad. It is a shame the rider never learnd to sit on a horse properly. Very poor equitation. Watch were his boots are in the stirups. way to far forward and he is having to continue spuring the horse as he is riding. His heels are up and not down. He is hunched over the saddle horn like he is drunk or dead. I bet if you were to put someone who had better equitation the horse wouldn't look as bad.

  • There are 2 people whom will always be remembered at any event whether it be at a horse show, the nascar race or what ever they are the winner and the one who makes a ass out of themselves.

  • Actually, I do, lol. If you only knew. Grand Central is not my favorite, but I believed he deserved to win. I'm just saying there are a lot of horses that have won the last few years that long trot. The 2009 WGC class pissed me off a hell of a lot worse than the 2010 WGC class.

  • @elaine0033 You know what elaine It also does us to, but what can you do about it. I had druther be pissed off as pissed on.

  • Please people. evidentially some of you don't know a foxtrotting horse. Grand Central is one of the best. If you all are needing a horse to win. Take your mares have them bred to Grand Central or Prince Jester maybe you will get a winner if you can get the right person to train it or Tomas J Williams.

  • @gofoxtrot1 I would rather my mare be snake bit than bred to Grand Central. A pony that isn't even gaited. What a waste! Yes let Tom J Williams train and flop all over your horse. Thats a way to break it out they would be used to everything then. Dead man riding and all. The colt my cow trot like sire but would never foxtrot.

  • Standards of The breed,MFTHBA -Site (origin)

    Overview:

The exhibition of the horse in the show ring should present the Missouri Fox Trotting Horse performing the gaits in the proper manner. While a degree of latitude may be given in the show arena, the correctness of the gaits and the equitation and comfort of the rider is necessary to showcase our great horse to its best advantage.

IMO- that is not the way to promote this breed.

  • I'm a confused newbie. On the "About The Breed" section of the MFTHBA site the first thing they say is "THE MISSOURI FOX TROTTING HORSE IS KNOWN BEST FOR THE COMFORT IT AFFORDS IT RIDER" If this is true, how in the world did the judges place this horse first, especially at their premier show? The poor rider looked like a sack of potato's bouncing around up there. His equitation made it appear he had trouble staying on. I'll take the COMFORT of my steady old trail horse over a rough show winner

  • @confusedFTowner Just because they place certain horses in performance classes of any breed doesn't mean that horse is considered the standard or the best representative of that breed, happens all of the time, haven't you ever attended any other major breed World shows and seen it for yourself?

  • @confusedFTowner

It's a shame this is the example that newcomers to the breed are first exposed to.

Please dont discount the Missouri Foxtrotter! There are GOOD smooth gaited riding horses out there.. you just have to look a little harder these days. I would like to see the current "show" standards challenged. A horse can be knocked off the top placing BECAUSE he is too smooth!

  • @confusedFTowner .....this is a smooth breed but there are two things to consider when watching this video: One, the show standard causes the horse to be trained to do a harder trot in back (MFTs walk in front and trot in back when fox trotting) and there is a bit of a bounce with a "show" gait, Two, some of the professional riders attempt to exaggerate the hard trot by purposefully bouncing up and down in the saddle and bobbing their own heads along with the horses.

  • I SHARE THE CONCERN OVER THE CURRENT TREND OF PLACING HORSES THAT DO NOT FOX TROT, BUT RATHER LONG TROT. IT IS A REAL PROBLEM, AND THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE TO THE TRAINED EYE. THE HEADSHAKE IS BEING VALUED OVER THE GAIT. I DON'T THINK THAT GRAND CENTRAL LONG TROTS. THERE ARE SEVERAL HORSES THE LAST FEW YEARS THAT HAVE WON WITH A HEADSHAKE AND NO RHYTHM. THIS IS A LEGITIMATE CONCERN, AND FAR LESS-DESERVING HORSES HAVE WON THAN GRAND CENTRAL IN RECENT YEARS. OF THIS CAN WE AGREE?

  • What an outstanding performance made by Tom Williams and Grand Central. I think that is is amazing that by watching a video that so many of you can make so many assumptions, when you know nothing about the horse or the rider how can you say that the horse has been tortured? How can you assume that he has been gingered, we'll guess what, no ginger. I'm certain if the horse was yours or your son was riding him you would have a different opinion.

  • @cheetah2010ish no one could have said it any better.

  • I hate to tell you but Grand Central was never tortured. He is natural. Tom is a talented enough to bring him to his full potential. I come to the WGC to watch a HORSE SHOW. Not a trail ride. Those who post negative comments seem jealous. They would sing a different tune if Grand Central was in their barn. If he was that bad, why did he win the 2, 3, 4, & 5 year old WGC plus the Breeder's Cup? By different judges!! Obviously the entire crowd enjoyed the show that the pair put on. Good job Tom!

  • @lazydayfarms I too come to see a horse show. NOT a circus as performed by GC and his rider. NO jealousy here why take a non-gaited horse over a smooth gaited horse. If that is natural I would hate to brag on it. As he is not performing a foxtrot. Especially the fake shake that he has not to mention the ginger up his behind. Yes way to go GC and Rider ruining the breed one hard trot at a time!

  • A breed promoted as a smooth-gaited riding horse should not award WGC status to a horse and rider team where daylight shows between the butt and saddle. Also the equitation is good for a laugh, but it is at the breed's expense!! I believe this horse probably can fox trot under reasonable riding conditions, BUT those were absent in this instance. I am an MFTHBA member for now.

  • GRAND CENTRAL IS ONE OF THOSE RARE HORSES THAT HAS IT ALL. HE HAS BEEN CLOSELY SCRUTINIZED BY THE BEST IN THE BREED. THE THREAT TO THE BREED ARE THOSE HORSES THAT ATTEMPT TO REPLICATE HIS HEAD SHAKE WITHOUT THE NATURAL FOX TROT. GRAND CENTRAL AND TOMMY WILLIAMS SHOULD NOT BE PUNISHED FOR THAT. THE GAIT OF THE FOXTROT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE JUDGES COMMITTEE: TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN THE STANDARD AND THE IMITATIONS.

"The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves."

  • @elaine0033 and Grand Central was not foxtrotting. He was hard/square trotting. And his head shake is man made not natural at all. All those other horses had it! He is what is ruining the breed. The rider is making fun of him self by the way he is riding Not the people. But you can tell this horse is rough as the rider is bouncing out of the saddle. Plus the horse isn't foxtrotting he is to square to foxtrot. Not to mention the excessive pumping in all three gaits!

  • @foxtrotlover: elaine did you just wake up yesterday? you don't know a hard/square trot from a foxtrot.

  • foxtrotlover, you should get some armrests, they're really nice, along with some glasses and someone to sit beside you and explain to you what a horse is supposed to do, because whoever is telling you doesn't know. Ive packed a few garlands out of that arena myself, have you? But don't just take my word for it, ask Jerry Middleton, Steve Dampier or Justin Dampier who won the class, they've packed several WGC garlands or the 5 judges and the 9 judges rating the judges who all tied him first.

  • @131rooster, I don't need glasses. So you are saying that the mfthba judges committee doesn't know what a foxtrot is? Sorry I offended you and your horse. How many garlands have you carried out and what horses? I don't get excited about seeing a horse win that is rough. It only hurts this wonderful breed of horse. And a rough horse isn't foxtrotting. Those 5 judges were bribed, it was obvious. Not to mention the pressure from certain people.

  • One more thing. I feel sorry for those who had to compete against this horse. As those judges gave them a HUGE SCREWING! Just because they were bribed!

  • 131rooster, You mean to tell me you have been going since 1978 and still don't know what a horse should look like? A horse thats abused, ruff, and crippled doesn't look like a winner to me or the others who have posted on here. I would never have a horse like that as I humanely treat and train my horses. How can you talk about Flawless when the horse never foxtrotted. It only square/hard trotted. Excessive pumping in all three gaits. This is disgusting. My internet chair doesn't have arm rest.

  • I'm sure if you had one that could do what this horse can do, you could name your own price and it wouldn't be cheap...well not near as cheap as the shots your throwing out at this horse, and rider. Obviously this pair worked hard all year to put on a flawless WORLD CHAMPION PERFORMANCE. Once again if you think hes so horrible, get the best horse that you can beg, borrow or steal and just try to beat him.

  • Grand Central, one of the best Ive seen go around that ring in a long time, and Ive not missed a night of the Celebration since 1978. Any of you armchair, internet, wanna be experts that have been in the breed 5-6 years ever get one half as good as him, then come on the internet and complain, maybe then your complaint will carry somewhat of a hint of merit.

  • Best horse in the ring, maybe with on other rider. Horse show is not a back garden party or Circus. I a World Champion Ship? The Management, the judges have to follow the rules. The MFTHA Rules were brocken: Page 55, section 2 A-4c. Page 56-15, Page 57 section 3 A-4, Page 27 section 1 A, Page 69 section 1 B-4, Page 81 G, Page 21 section 2, Page 81 G Equitation/Horsemanship, Page 81 G.

The horse and the rider is not the point, it just the result.

    More questions?

  • It's hard to watch. Sadly, we have this abuse in every discipline. Watch Grand Prix dressage and it's painful to watch too.

  • What is the answer? I pulled out of the MFTHBA a few years ago. I hoped if enough people would keep their money, they may have to rethink what they're doing, but listening to the crowd tells me they have support. I have people stop me on the trails to ask about my MFTs. It's not because they're pretty (they are), it's because they see the gait and the personality. I direct them to breeders who love their horses and don't make grotesque puppets of them. I don't send them to the MFTHBA.

  • I am stunned a judge would award a championship to THAT! What a shame. I used to own and show Fox Trotters a little. I finally gave up because the trainers kept changing the gaits to hard trots and it felt like I was riding in a car with four flat tires. Plus my arms ached from holding up their heads. The rider of poor little 579 wouldn't last two minutes on the back of one of my horses. When you sit like that, not only do you look stupid, you throw off the balance of your horse.

  • Comment removed

  • Howetheywalk: Talk to the trainer and they will tell you they are not pulling on the mouth to get that canter (I've asked). They must think we are really blind! Bottom line is what's wrong with their real canter? If you watch closely you'll see 579 is "helping" his horse's head bob. Maybe that's why he has to hunch over. The buckskin is a little short strided but smooth so is the palomino. The rest are bouncing betties. LOL

  • As depressing as the foxtrot represented by this winning horse, I didn't see a single canter that was effortless and offered by the horse. If you have to yank on the mouth to get a horse to canter you should just give up and quit trying. Every single horse looked miserable at the canter.

I'm from Missouri and this is embarrassing. The real shame is that this is a wonderful breed but much like we see in the TWH show rings, the search for a blue ribbon distorts a wonderful gait.

  • what with those "riders" hunched over, all that ugly head bobbin is going to hit them in the face.

Lots of trotting, step pacing, walking and who knows what else. Saw one foxtrot, but the horse looked like an Arab with its flagging tail and the horse had no thread - meaning when asked for speed it couldn't remain in the correct FOXTROT ugh.

take off the shoes, use some real equitation and get a horse that naturally foxtrots.

  • Why is he riding Grand Central all hunched over and why is Grand Central so much more exaggerated than the other horses? And why is the crowd so excited about it? You have to blame the judges for putting a horse like this up. This is how breeds are ruined.

  • I haven't paid much attention to the show world in years, but I can see nothing has changed even after all the "training" for the judges to learn the standards. Sad, sad, sad.. I certainly wouldn't suggest anyone thinking about buying a fox trotter watch something like this. It would be the best way to change their mind about the breed. The equitation of the rider on the red horse with the long trot and fabricated head nod was painful to watch and the horse looked like a spastic woodpecker.

  • I am so glad that I didn't change my plans to go the show. I have foxtrotters and my trail horses are a much better example of the breed than some of them in this class. The horses at a canter were a joke - the riders in their mouths every step of the way. I guess the judges are swayed by the crowds cheers - but as the Tennessee Walker people learned, you don't show for the crowds - you will get in trouble. You show your horse at it's best. This was a disaster. My pick was palomino

  • I don't know much about MFT showing and after seeing this I don't want to if the guy spurring his horse with his toes down and back hunched and bouncing so much actually won. Not to mention the poor horse, he had to be so dizzy from that awful head shake I'm surprised he could stand still at the end! I'm just a MFT trailrider though........not a member and don't plan to after seeing this!

  • I spoke to someone about this and was assured the horse was fox trotting. I'm not seeing it. I'm not seeing much in the way of reach. Also I'd bet that horse's mouth is tough as an old boot! Don't even get me started on the ears and the head bob. I see only two riders with semi-decent equitation and one of them is just bouncing his little butt off. LOL Posting this is fine however Ava has to be changed from inside. Poor little 579. Started too young and jerked around.

  • wow that poor little red horse that won. that headshake looks disgusting i think(not natural at all), and he's obviously hard trotting. there were a couple of nice horses in that class, he was not one. thanks so much for posting this.we have to change this. all promoting that "gait" is going to do is keep people from joining the organization. i know lots of people that own foxtrotters but aren't MFTHBA members because they don't want any part in this, and I can't say I blame them.

  • What a disgrace! Ava never learns.

  • Five judges closed their eyes-what was the prize for that ?

A hard Longtrot, a hand-made headshake-and this horse won the World championship..????????????

    remember the rules..

    Smooth gaited, natural rhythm?????????

The Missouri Foxtrotter- a wonderfull breed with a lot of potential...

    But so- I'm speakless

I feel ashamed, as a rider, owner and trainer of this breed..and as a lifetime member of the MFTHBA

  • gees that is depressing....precisely why i don't attend the show in ava.

good for you for posting it on line.

  • Omg. You can see daylight between his butt and the saddle in the foxtrot. No way is that smooth. My trotting horse is smoother than that. If you're going to bounce that much, you should NOT wear a light colored hat. It shows like crazy. I would think that alone would eliminate the horse and rider from ribbons. I sure hate to see the MFT go the way of the TWH. By the way, notice how the rider tips his hat way down over his eyes and never looks up or forward. Embarrassed?

  • Thanks to Miller Ranch and Mr.Lothar for posting this very informative video for a true picture of the last class of the WGC MFTHBA show.

  • I can't believe this horse won! What happened to our nice smooth foxtrot? This horse looks so hard to ride! So unnatural and the man riding should see what he looks like riding! I am ashamed of what MFTHBA judges think is a World Champion!

I am so glad I didn't attend ! I think that horse needs a chiropractic treatment after all this shaking!

  • when I first got into foxtrotters 4 yrs. ago, i read as much as possible and I read over and over how a foxtrotters caps its front hoof print with the rear hoof and that is one of the things to watch for and it is one of the things that makes the smooth ride. what I saw was an over reach of two feet or so.

  • Wow,sad sad sad.

  • You know, the more I look at this , the more I have to say that owner and rider of 579

ought to be ASHAMED of themselves!

  • Once again, an obscene example of what is being done to a good breed... gray suit winning horse.. poor boy! That extreme head not is NOT natural... and this is not a good example of the smooth gaits of this wonderful riding horse. Also this rider looks like a retard.. sorry but true.

  • @foxtrot5761

It's sad that there are still people in the world who do not realize how hurtful it is to say such a word as "retard". It's sad that grown adults are bad mouthing someone they do not even know. More sad that this word is being used. Please consider kindness. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

  • @jodyjokisch so are you saying because GC his rider and owner and the judges screwed everyone screw them back? Cause thats what they done. Hard to get back big money politics not sure that can be done. Maybe that rider doesn't look like a "retard" that would be putting a really retarded person down to that riders level. He looks like an "idiot" or a "moron".

  • @jodyjokisch

Well, I do apologize to any mentally challenged persons that may have been offended ( although I think you are overreacting to a word ). but I do not feel the need to apologize to the persons involved with this entry in question . In my opinion, this is abuse ( and you'd have to question the intelligence level of anyone thinking that entry was a good example of gait and horsemanship ). A shame that others have to suffer at the expense of ego .

  • Cannot believe this horse wins again. The rider looks like he is in pain, and the horse is smashing is private parts. This breed is going to have to wake up someday and realize that this type of horse is running people out of the breed! Rough is NOT a FOXTROT nor is it a Smooth GAIT!!

  • Good Job! I was cheering for the palomino with blue on. It was my horse and someone told me to shut up because that horse was too smooth and would not and should not win. He said that the horse that won would win. Sad day for the MFT. Everyone needs to see this!

  • @andrewwhendrix

Which palomino is yours .. the pale one with blue on his blanket? Nice smooth gait.. esp for show. Saw a couple others that at least had a more natural gait for the show ring.

  • @andrewwhendrix He's lucky that I wasn't sitting in the stands next to him and he said that to me about my horse, because,he'd probably found himself on the ground knocked backwards off of the bleachers.there would have been a real show, then.
