@websnarf: I haven't read "Surreal Numbers", but based on the comments on Amazon it looks like a similar kind of thing. Math Girls isn't focused on a single topic, though, more like a bit of this and a bit of that (see the Table of Contents in the sample PDF on the Bento Books website). It looks like Math Girls is written for a slightly younger audience, too, probably 11th grade through college. The "watching the unfolding process of doing math* aspect looks similar.

Is the book anything like "Surreal Numbers" by Donald Knuth (also a math story intertwined by a (admittedly fairly simple) romantic story)?
