Amazing the bottomless appettite for vulgarity and commonality the public displays, while glittering diamond talent hers goes woefully overlooked. Oh well, Suzanne will have to be satisfied with the quality of her fans over the quantity. Luckily she has precisely the sophistication to appreciate us just as we do her.

Left of Center is on her "Retrospective", from 2003, and also "Live at the Stephen Talkhouse" CD from 2003. The latter one used to be available at her on-line store but was not last time I looked. The Retrospective track is on Amazon.com as a download also.

Amazing! I remember seeing this live footage on German television nearly two decades ago and always remembered the melody since then. I was looking for this song forever and never found as it wasn't on any of the "regular" Vega-albums. Then came youtube. GREAT!!!!

She originally wrote the song "Left Of Center" for the film "Pretty In Pink." The song was included in the film, but not the singing parts. However the song appears on the motion picture soundtrack for "Pretty In Pink" in its entirety.

In fact, it her androgony that is so attractive--she is woman, boy and creature all at once (and why her singing of "Luka", about a young boy, worked so well)...I think it's her Buddhist leanings...

Despite her outer insecurity (obvious in this concert) she seems inwardly balanced.

Among singer-songwriters I find that women more commonly sing and write from a male point of view than the other way round - it's pretty rare (not in the old show-tune world though). Irish folk singers like Mary Black and Dolores Keane do plenty of songs from a male point of view (e.g. Carolina Rua) but men do it much less. I think it's just a case of putting yourself in another's viewpoint, and anyway, there's nothing much masculine or feminine about being beaten up or knocked round a room.
