  • A clock is a device used to measure time. It does not control time. The rate of time never changes the only thing that changes is the perception of time. As for time travel, if it was possible that would mean that the past and the future would have to exist in the universe at the same time. So if time travel was possible it would be known at the begining of time because some one some where from the future would have traveled back to prove it.

  • @Arcflash67 Nobody said it controlled time it simply measures the local rate of time, which is different depending on where you are and how fast you are travelling. How would your perception change the clock exactly??

Neither the past or the future 'exists' only the here and now. A future traveller could observe but would not make themselves know for fear of changing 'history' and the future they came from.

  • total midfuck :(

  • Back to the future!

  • This makes no sense. The light clock slows down because of the relative movement between the photon and the mirror. This has nothing to do with the relative motion between the complete clock and a stationary observer. You are simply increasing the distance between the 2 mirrors. No time dilation or special relativity is required to explain that - it is trivial: the clock would appear to slow down to ALL observers!

  • @johnnyckrock Now you only have to solve one tiny remaining problem - what is a stationary observer?

Is the professor the stationary observer when he starts the clock at 2:45? Does he see the "true" ticking speed of the lightclock (1 second for a full cycle), or is it slowed down?

  • Well what I meant by "stationary observer" was one relative to whom the clock is moving. My point was that they would see the mirrors moving, and the light therefore having a longer distance to travel between mirrors. But I don't see why an observer who is with the clock would see anything differently. He should still observe that the second mirror has moved on since the light reflected off the first one. But I am told he will not see this relative movement between light and mirror.

  • ...and while that may be true - that the observer who moves with the clock will not see the clock slow down - it doesn't seem to me to be explained logically by the analogy. Relativity requires that when this observer sees the light hit the second mirror, it will appear to have come from where the first mirror is NOW (relative to him), instead of where the first mirror was a short time ago.

  • @johnnyckrock Did the professor see the upper mirror move 200 km from 2:51 to 2:52? The distance his tiny cosmically irrelevant Solar system covered in one second orbiting around the galactic center?

  • @Biarry no, nor should he have, since it did not move relative to him. But when the light reflected off one mirror, why, as it moved through space on it's way to the other mirror, did it keep up with the mirrors and the professor? That's the part that the example doesn't explain.

  • @johnnyckrock Ha ha ha, you forgot the traveller always sees the clock tick normally, at the same time as the observer sees it slow...wheres your theory now?

  • @Manoo62 I didn't forget that. I flatly denied that this is the case. What makes you think that the traveler sees the clock tick normally?

  • @johnnyckrock Professor holds the clock at 2:50. Does it tick normally - one second for the full up-and-down cycle?

  • @Biarry I don't know. I mean, it looks like it does in the video, but that is CGI and I presume you are asking if it really would appear to tick normally in real life. I don't know. I realize that if it does, time dilation would be required to explain it. But I don't see any proof. Manoo62's question highlights the issue: we may know that the moving clock runs more slowly, but how do we know that the travelling observer would not perceive that? That seems to be an assumption.

  • @johnnyckrock Experiments show that lightclocks on Earth do not slow down, and they always tick at the same rate. Our planet's movement relative to the Sun, galactic core, Great Attractor or any other arbitrary point in space is irrelevant.

So what Bertrand sees at 2:30 is exactly what professor sees at 2:50 - a (CGI) photon inside a lightclock taking exactly one second to make a full cycle.

  • @Biarry Fair enough. I didn't get this from the video, but I have been reading a lot about it since then. Thanks for all the comments!

  • @johnnyckrock Hundreds of experiments since the Michelson–Morley experiment have shown that light is always measured at the same speed even when the distance is smaller or larger. So the clock remains constant for the 'traveller' when we know it has slowed. Whilst the clocks on GPS satellites run about 38 microseconds faster when 'observed' from earth and have to be constantly re-synced to remain useful.

  • to me time travel is impossible. well einstein said it was impossible too, since u cant go faster than light. Unless "you" , your body only , without the spaceship travels faster than light, u will not stay young, you will still have interactions with the ship, so you will age. Can your body stay intact while going faster than the speed of light? unlikely. Humanity can only dream about this. We won't see time travel happen. But I like surprises.

  • @Spulpacz according to u, how far past can we go after we invent the machine. till the time we invent the machine?

  • F i wish this was real i mean like real time travel

  • Hey guys hear my theory out,i believe you can time travel back in time but cant travel to the future because there is no future as there is only the present and past.As to people who say time travel is not real, because there arent people coming to visit us from the future.well thats because there is no future, until we make a time travel machine ,its not gonna happen, and when when find the technology we will be able to travel back in time, but the past will never alter our future

  • TimeTravel_0 : If you bombard a singularity with electrons...

TimeTravel_0 : you can alter the size of its event horizon.

TimeTravel_0 : and thus its gravitational field.

TimeTravel_0 : By overlapping these fileds from two singularities...

TimeTravel_0 : you can travel forward and backward through time.

TimeTravel_0 : Its actuallyu quyite simple.

  • I wish light clocks were real....I want one.

  • I did see a flux capasitor in that time machine

  • Thumbs up if you understood all of that.

  • WTF man yO

  • aaaahhh my head

  • I know of only 1 thing that moves fast than the speed of light and it's not neutrinos. Every time I masturbate, my ejaculate shoots out at about 900 million mph, thus by the time it falls to the ground, it will have time traveled roughly 45 seconds into the future.

  • just to add that timetravel was Pythagoras theory and idea.

  • This video is overly simplistic. Bertrand wouldn't see the beams relatively "slowly like a faster car moving along the highway" 670,000,000mph=SOL so if you consider the assumption of moving half the speed of light (335 mil mph) is comparable to the analogy above then you've got shit for brains!!

  • Exellent video that explains it perfect almost all of myquestions are answered. Thanks

  • This is crazy I just want a time machine goddamit make it happen >:C!

  • i lost u at 0.01

  • @google.com

  • @Bhodhidharman you mean "slower". -> Time in GPS satellites revolving around earth actually has ticks faster.

  • quick! everyone get on a plane within the next 3 hours and fly to one of the time zones still in 2011 if you wanna time travel but judging by how often comments are made I'd say by the time your reading this its already past that so yeah this comment is pointless but you only live once so ima go ahead and post in anyways! happy new years everyone :P

  • So is my time travelers fund contribution going to become a wonderful investment?? prolly not.. sure there will be alot of red tape along with stupid laws if our species figure it out.multi-verse theory!!! p.s.- n e travelers r welcome to my dimension only in peace, help, and learning;.

  • The scientific irelitavelatically pronouned relitifical theory of time could be altered in such a way we would all paradox

  • @YouCanSeeYourFace

You would merley see another "past" version of yourself and therfore touching or moving anything or even being seen will cause a time paradox and it would play out in the future... If not careful could destroy the timeline and the universe.

  • Like if youre watching in 2099!!

  • @chumsyalibumsy09 Im watching in cave art as I took it as face value and I went back in time.. Damm reality and that, Hope your all enjoying world war one, unless I got my maths messed up.. if I did I hope that prince charles was still taken away by aliens in your year 2017, that was ace...

  • i don't get it somebody please explain

  • @fanta832

if u travel faster than the speed of light, then u time travel..or at least that is one matematically proven way to time travel. Time and Space are the same thing, because all the space u see around you is brought to you by light(photons and other stuff cant remember. Light has a definite speed. That means everthing u see around you is actually in the past, the further you see out, the further out you look into the past. There are observable stars that are 13 billion years old!

  • @63Bueno Oh, thank you very much.

  • Time travel is actually happening. Time in GPS satellites revolving around earth actually has ticks faster. It is travelling into future faster than us in earth. Frequent sync is needed for it to show the earth's time. It is true. U can verify yourselves.

  • I am from the future, YOU MUST READ THIS! IT IS THE MATTER OF HUMANITY!

At year 3145, world will be invaded by aliens, because they have tracked some signal from internet, caused by this comment's likes, which by that time is at -12. We must prevent the invasion and give this comment likes. Do this and save our time, as reward, I tell you that Justin Bieber will be assassinated in near future

  • @YouCanSeeYourFace No, you wouldn't, because that be like cloning yourself. You are already there, in the spaceship or whatever. So there wouldn't be two of you. But you would see younger versions of your friends and family, just not yourself. To achieve this, you would have to go faster than the speed of light, because light is timeless!

  • Can u time travel so fast to where the worlds ends then enter the past while going to the future

  • @hairyballsz hi if you go faster than light thru space from earth then time would be slow for you but years will go by on earth so if you go for a long time you probbley would be so far in time that the earth would be gone ,,,you can only go forward in time not backwards one day the earth will be gone when the sun burns out ok

  • If you take into account that what we measure time with are actually PARTICLES, it makes sense.

  • This might sound dumb but I'm not smart and I guess everyone else here pretty much is but if we where to go back in time would we be able to see a younger version of ourselves or would we relive from that year onward? If that second theory is right do you think we would know what happened or do you think it just reset our life from that year. Again it may sound really dumb but thats what I came up with anyways

  • When driving from home to school, it takes about 5 minutes to arrive. Walking takes no more than 30 minutes. The faster I drive, the slower time passes for me. So what might be 5 minutes for me (driver), could be half-an-hour for my neighbor (walker). Time travel.

  • When i clicked here, i thought i was going to see Jimmy Neutron

  • wow..this is really cool *scientific* explanation and video!

    thanks!

  • you all probably don't realize this but were all traveling into the future as we speak, every second were traveling into the future veeery slowly tho lol

  • History Channel: Albert Einstein was a time travelling alien.

  • So the faster you go the faster time passes. So does that mean the slower you travel the slower time passes?

  • i guess the only way to find out is send your ass outer space... are u up to that?

  • @jazzierocks1999

no that just means ur slow piece of shit.

  • @jazzierocks1999 Actually the faster you go the slower time passes, and the slower you go the faster it passes.

  • 100 Into the future in one hour?! Wow!

  • is this really possible?

can you really go back in time just by traveling by the speed of light?

    thats freaking AWSOME!!!!

  • @xXgamerNanimeloverXx hi you can only go forward in time not backwards ..the speed of light only slows the travler down ,but not time on earth it will go by as it does who is going at light speed or faster time is only slower but if you wanted to see earth in the futher you would have to go faster than light only for a few minities if you go to long many years would go by you might even come back to a dead planet ..ok

  • wait.. so if his heart beat and brain waves keep slowing down then wouldn't he die in the future?

  • For reference: the speed of light is 3.00x10^8 and the reason it's 3.00 not 3 is because of significant digits, or how precise we have measured the speed

  • There are two problems with time travel: 1 you can only go forward 2 the faster you go, the slower time passes for you so what seems to be time travel on the outside is just the same on the inside

  • @D3monation You have no idea what your talking about!

  • If its all relative... Who's moving and who's stationary?

  • so even if i buy a delorian im still gonna have to go faster than 88 mph to go into the future this is bullshit

  • @goofdangas69 try 88 light years per hour?

  • Timetravel, it's hard to imagine. It's so strange if it's possible in every way

  • Comment removed

  • if time travel is possible in the future then it is here now ... ; ]

  • well i'm from 2011 and i know that this theory is just on the verge of being proven wrong by european scientists......

  • @himanshuvishu Source? I wanna read up on this

  • @BBobbyy14 well you can search it up on the net. i found it in newspaper

  • From my perception. If time travel is possible, it mins time actualy duplicates tins. Bcos if u time travel u wil see d past you.......... Mehn! This tin is complicated.

  • I was reading about this in a book once... I am highly skeptical of the time travel claims...

The book said that if a rocket went a fraction of the speed of light, it would appear go forward in time 10 years while the earth would go forward in time 20 years. However, the same thing would happen to earth, it would go forward in 10 years while the rocket went forward in time 20 years.

WTF how does that work >.> ?!? Plus particles go faster than the speed of light, causing uproars in science :P

  • The speed of light is the cosmic speed barrier. You cannot pass it. However particles travelling faster than the speed of light aren't ruled out by General Relativity so long as they were always travelling faster. The speed barrier still exists only they can't de accelerate beyond it. These hypothetical particles would travel backwards in time. If someone is interested in this, read about neutrinos and OPERA expiriment.

  • ok if time slows down when you go faster than light ..and hundreds of years go by on earth .while your traveing thru space away from earth so what happends when you stop and trurn around and come back to eart ant the same speed would the time on eart go back to when you left or would another hundred of years go by ..if so you would be comeing back to a dead planet .cause hundred.s of years go by something has to give eigther a nuker war or a asteroid ,,or something would have

  • The speed of light is 300.000 km per second.

And I have to believe that if i travel 150.000 km per second

the light would pass me with 450.000 km/s?

    Keep on dreaming buddy...

  • just like the universe is infinite there is no limits of speed since speed is affected by mass.. The maximum speed is not the speed of light, and therefore its the infinite amount of speed that will have to "give" and therefore not time

  • I guess to construct a time machine to go backwards, we would need to enable our coherence with a parallel reality (quantum parallel universes) and if we could do so we would enter that alternate reality, to travel back would mean to somehow become coherent of pasts in other timelines, I guess something like a quantum computer of the future, something to manipulate atoms in their quintillions could perhaps do this.

  • So if I go 100 mph would it be significant enough to alter time? What about a plane? If I'm flying on an airplane then time goes by slower but it seems the same so it balances it out. But then why doesn't my watch become a couple minutes behind when I fly. Or does it? Someone explain this to my I'm confused

  • @elyKyle95 You're not going fast enough in a plane to notice any time difference. Tests were done in the 1970's that proved this theory. Atomic clocks were placed on supersonic rockets that flew around the earth at supersonics speeds. The clock on the rocket were synched with atomic clocks on earth. After the rocket flew around earth at supersonic speeds, it was discovered that the clocks on the rocket had slowed down fractionally.

  • @superchris09 I heard they found little Neutrino's they have been tested and said that they were going faster than light does this mean with a crazy ass example what if you're inside a Neutrino rocket that goes faster than light does that mean we can travel back in time? But what about the people around us? What will happen to them I assume that is not knowable?

  • @elyKyle95 When travelling at the speed of light, the slowtime of time is much more substantial...

  • @superchris09 yes i understand that, but being on a plane doesn't make enough of a difference?

  • Let me go back to 2011

  • Greetings morons from 2011, I am from the advanced future of the year 19,392,399,399,294,299,200,392,399,399,294,299,200,392,399,399,294,299,200,392,399,399,294,299,200,392,399,399,294,299,200,392,399,399,294,299,200,392,399,399,294,299,200,392,399,399,294,299,200,392,399,399,294,299,200,392,399,399,294,299,200,392,399,399,294,299,200,392,399,399,294,299,200,392,399,399,294,299,200,392,399,399,294,299,200,392,399,399,294,299,200,392,399,399,294,299,200,392,399,399,294,299,200,392

  • @MeloYel0 why hello there,im from 4989 the advance future of the year to.But i guess not advanced as yours :/ lol

  • @MeloYel0 they still have youtube? looks like humanity has a bright future.

  • @MeloYel0 Man it must suck to write/type the date on your paper/computer/super robot

  • @MeloYel0 oh its one of YOU GUYS! you guys think your so cool for discovering time travel but us from 19,392,399,399,294,299,200,392,399,399,294,299,200,392,399,399,294,999,299,392,399,399,294,299,200,392E^345,3423^10 revolutionised it. :0)

  • @MeloYel0 are you joking

    beserious

  • @MeloYel0 im from 2012 bitch!

  • this means IF IT WAS possible... we could only go in to the future?

  • @tttoms1992 Yes that's exactly what it means. It was proposed that going into the past was impossible due to a paradox. Steven Hawkings has a show called Into The Universe on Discovery Channel. In one episode he talks about time travel and tells us differnent ways of how it could be possible. What you just saw was one idea of many but this one is the most likely one to do.

  • my perspective of time is that I'm aware of this moment right now, but people from 220 years ago are also aware of this same moment right now, but it belongs to a different time or distance in time, moment is the same, I could die today and be born 500 years ago and believe in that moment is the only one that exist, but in fact it's the same moment, it's just traveling through time, in other words, time is like space, is right there, and moment is our movement on it, only it keeps on going fowar

  • thumbs up if ur NOT watching this in 2019!

  • Einsteinian "speed of light" time travel isn't time "travel". It's standing still and letting time pass by.

  • This is amazing stuff. Btw wasnt Bertrund (I think I spelled it correctly) the name of Stewies nemesis from Family Guy? :0

  • who won the world cup in 2096 ?

  • shutup

  • NVM I JUST GO slower -_-

  • Woah so the faster i run the faster time gets AWSOME at school im going to run in circles super fast

  • Merkabah moves within an all-embracing energy field which is composed of multiple magnetic, electromagnetic, and magneto-hydrodynamic domains unified into a “field stasis” using multiple polar denominations. The vehicle operating within the field the ability to go faster than the speed of our common light. With instant acceleration with power to travel at 2.9 times (or more) the speed of light as defined by man. The vehicle can go through these portals, time tunnels or “wormholes :)o*o

  • dude, we have invented time travel in 2067 this is 2069..

  • To think of it, could Einstein have been a time traveler himself ; just going back in time to give our generation hints on time travel ? O:

  • @kewltamx i got it ! Bertrand is the time traveler and cause of paradoxes he died when telling that time travel can be possible so Bertrand died cause interfering with the past but Albert get the theory ! :D and we thought that Albert didn't had a twin brother :D

  • @kewltamx He did create a time machine, but destroyed it becuase of the americans dropping the A bomb on japan.

  • @kewltamx :O

  • @kewltamx Perhaps, not a bad idea :D

  • And if your speeding through space one hour for us is 100 years for the opposite person speeding in space how will he return to earth?

  • @Felizais it's the other way around one hour for him is 100 years for us on earth

  • This makes no sense in conclusion the basic thing your doing is moving into space very fast correct me if im wrong...

  • The notion of time is an illusion of our brains, see this very simple logical explanation why this can only be the case: imgur.com /2Enpr

  • hmm, i know the speed of light observed in light is the same for all observers but what f the frequencies??

  • Time doesn't exist, exists only movement. If every atom stopped moving would you have time? No. Time is just a human idea to keep track of these atoms moving. That's why there is no substance in Relativity theory. If nobody can explain it with simple words after so many years there must be a reason why: there is nothing to understand. Einstein initially made a great discovery by proving the light bending effect during the eclipse. After that it was all media hype.

  • The word you leave out of this video is "the MEASUREMENT" of the speed of light. Absolute time (classical Newtonian time) does not vary in any manner; slow clocks don't mean time has slowed down. Einstein's equations for relativity only correct for the variance of subjective observations by using light speed measurements as a correction factor even though some people claim they also account for real objective observations. Time travel is pure nonsense!

  • So. Waves are spread out when moving at near light speed (in relation to the universe..) does that mean our bodies are composed of waves or does it mean that time is a wave or does it mean both?

  • whaaaaaaaa?

  • I don't get what the narrator is talking about..

  • if you go forward in time, then you go back in time to try and stop your self from going forward in time will you be able to stop your self?

    A. you couldnt stop your self because before you went forward in time you didnt see your self trying to stop you.

    B. you can because you just havnt tried to stop your self yet

    WHICH IS IT MAN!!!

  • 1 thing we must remember to do when looking at our life in the space-time history of the universe is don't view it from a universal perspective, view time from an individual perspective after all you are not the universe you are not anyone else nor anyone who lived before you, you are you and for you and your perspective which is relevant to you because you are you this means all the time before you were alive did not exist within the individual world with which you find yourself. think about it

  • @deanmullen10 Good statesment, but what you said was irrelevant. Time and your individual perspective are non relational. This is because your existence in time does not alter time frame's. For example, if you were never born, it would still be 2011 and the rest of the world would still be the same. I understand your differences of where you are approaching, but the truth is, your individual perspective if the world does not make a difference to the inertial frame of reference.

  • @GlockComa16 I know that but what I'm saying is that the true timeline of the universe doesn't matter to us because we experience time from our own perspective. If you go to sleep time seems to go faster, so I'm saying all the time before you were alive you observed no time hence since you cannot be aware, notice or experience no time/nothing at the beginning of time you would find yourself at the beginning your life immediately, its an illusion of time basically.

  • Religion, for myself, Islam, sets and shows the limits between genius and sci fi, between what is constructible and what does not make sense and this at the early stages of your research so that we never waste time on a wrong track. Islam is the diapason for research and science, Mr scientists, tune yourselves!

  • @MsBavoila Shut up terrorist.

  • @mugen1237 :) very funny, I bet you are a pop-up that is programmed for everytime the word 'islam' is published. :)

  • @MsBavoila I'm just messing around...I'm very open minded about religion. I was just bored as Hell.

  • why don't they just call it light traveling? Time is made up by people.

  • @TheWezel1995 They call it time because they can reference it to time frames. Past, Present(which is irrelevant) and Future. They don't call it light travel because you are not traveling in light you are traveling through light, but through time frames.

  • oke, thanks ;)

  • DAMN, if this actually can happen, I can probably dodge bruce lee's kick, or punch bruce lee!

  • Don't think of it as time around him is slowing down, think of his aging process is slowing down

  • Thumbs up if ur seeing this in 1885

  • @zealtitan shutup

  • @SODMGYGRN shutup

  • @SODMGYGRN shutup

  • @zealtitan It can only go in the future so Thumbs up if you are watching this in 2040

  • @zealtitan Youtube wan't made till 2004-2005

  • No, time is slowing for him, not the observers

  • yes... exactly, therefore the observers carry on at full speed (time) whereas he is traveling slower through time... so the observers are in the future and he is behind them?

  • @elbasrever

if I understand it correctly, you can't really see it as "time travel" per se. It will be like traveling into the future since time passes much faster around you, so if you speed up in 1 second it would seem like you traveled a few months forward since it will be like that when you slow down. In reality you have simply been experiencing the world differently. It's more of a matter of perception than time travel really.

  • @Alexmedkex i think it turns into time travel when you exceed the speed of light,

since at c, the photon will neither travel upwards or downwards in the clock device....

therefore beyond c what will happen? o.O all very interesting stuff

  • @elbasrever According to Einstein, it is not possible to travel faster than the speed of light.

  • @GlockComa16 Yes, EXCEPT FOR IN EXTREME CIRCUMSTANCES

e.g, during the big bang, the universe was expanded to a huge size from the size of a single atom in under a second. This expansion means material must have been moving at faster than the speed of light (:

+ now there's all the experimentation on Neutrino's about to be undertaken... Einsteins limit seems to be cracking

  • @elbasrever They need to be teaching us in school applied science and phsics. Not matrix math, economics. They teach us such pointless things in school its ridiculous. If we were all to start learning applied math and science when we were in middle school. Our human race might actually be able to prosper. And humans would be GENIUSES, and grow towards being like higher beings, such as Extraterrestrials.

  • Surely if time is travelling slower then he will go into the past? not the future.... since everyone else would have gone way ahead in time?

  • 2) So the answer to the Einstein inspired time distortion experiments may be answered another way. Possibly you can travel faster than light and things around us just might. We would not see it. The world is not flat as they 1st thought, so why can't the physical travel faster than light? I bet it can!

  • 1) Is it possible that time travel due to the speed of light is wrong. Would travelling in time due to light only be in a visible form as time travel for sound is only audio delay. So we may see ouselves back from another time but it would be visual only. You are not really there. Light is only visual, not physical.

  • Great explanation.

  • 2:58 - I want that... NOW!

  • What kind of name is Bertrand?

  • i saw this a loooooong time ago. but that green light beam bouncing just clicked for me with time stopping and time going in reverse.

  • I want that clock! Cool shit :)

  • hmm where i come from (4837) this theory was proven true.

  • So really the title is misleading, what I found in this video was that there was no real form of time travel, the word travel meaning that you have the opportunity to go back to where you were, but rather that it is time moving because you are going from one period in time to the next only in the future not in the past, therefore there is no way to get back in time or reverse time.

  • @ThePathogenicAssault thats because tt isnt proven yet. but time dilation is the only real form that we have so far. its even a guinness world record. less than a second into the future, but the point is, its proven.

  • Hmmm.
