  • Thats very impressive.

  • the one and only portfolio I like on the whole net!!!! :P

  • @TokyoZeplin it's been awhile since this video was posted. So did you get accepted? I am talking with their one and only english speaking staff over email at the moment as I am considering Geidai as well for their film n media graduate school. I heard even the undergraduate entrance exam is like a living hell (55 out of 2500 applicants (?)) and after they graduated, they turned neurotic.

k the last one was a joke but yeah.

  • @vyzel very long story short: nope, basically applied to the wrong Uni (Geidai actually barely does any >Visual< design, as well as practically never works digitally). I should in actuality have applied to Tama Arts University.

And meh, the entrance isn't that harsh compared to so many others. My own Uni' in Denmark has around a 1/14 acceptance rate, so pretty used to the massive competition. Also, Geidai accepts more than 55 students a year I believe, you can find the actual numbers.

  • great portfolio!

  • That is a such a good, I hope you get a good response. Please let us now, if you want to that is. !!!... GREAT JOB..!!! and keep it up..! :)

  • Slick stuff, man.

  • Your work looks fantastic! I hope you get a place there! You should as that work is just so good.

I really like your artistic style, I want to get back into art, no money though :[

  • were did you learn english?

  • Comment removed

  • Your portfolio is amazing. It should be published one day! I'd definitely buy it.

  • ZEPLIN, srry for the caps; needed atention. K, wanted to know what is the style like over there. I have heard some bad things.,

  • I love your work Philip, are you on deviantART, Behance or anywhere else online? I'd be interested in buying a digital print copy of some of your work. -- btw, for next time look into using a digital printer with a finisher or use a binding machine, you can get a cleaner finish by binding the pages together either by heat or by stitching.

  • @ilabstudios As text in both video and description says, posters are available on redbubbleDOTcom! There is a link in the description box.

A binding machine is not an option due to the A3 size format.

Stitching was not an option, because I couldn't find any companies printing in A2 size on both sides of the paper (which would be needed in order to fold it into an A3 size book).

  • That was an awesome portfolio. Very cool. How do the japanese treat Americans???

  • curious, did you learn to speak japanese prior to your year in japan or... what? cause even your earliest videos, you had decent japanese.

  • Your porfolio looked really good, some bad spots but some real creative work. Different styles and looks. Well good luck with getting in the school and much success. Thanks for the insight into what you were doing!

  • The Movie is called Hell in the Pacific :) Good movie lol

  • thats sum tight work dawg!

  • Hey guy, may I ask what medium do you use?

  • That was truly amazing. Would love to have that level of skill. Sadly I'm a lazy person.

    Good luck to you!

  • Haha your british and irish accent was funny :D

  • wow! thats a great portfolio man, wish i could do stuff like that hahah, good luck!

  • u should tripod your camera and 2 hand your book. great stuff.

  • yes, titties.

  • wow man that is one hell of a fucking portfolio as a fellow artist i am hella jealous of your work, (way more creative than i!)

Good luck with your submission i hope you make it in!

  • Wow, you're talented!

  • good shit man, and good luck with it wish ya da best o luck

  • I am no artist, but I like what I saw here - good luck. It is interesting that Danish has a word for 'real-life projects'(job-job work, I think you said); I am not sure English does, although someone mentioned 'intern' work - an older version would have been 'journeyman' pieces, or 'apprentice' pieces, but these are more fully-fledged, professional projects.

  • @Peripatetic45 BlkUnk mentioned intern work, because some of the work here was done while I had an internship :)

In Danish, we'd say "erhvervs arbejde" (quite close to literally meaning "work work"), and "studie arbejde" (close to being "study work"). Google translate translates the first as"professional work", which I was also thinking of using, but the problem is that you don't actually have to be a professional to do it :S

  • cool

  • YOUR ACCENT. .. HAS CHANGED :p

  • So you made all the illustrations n stuff too?

  • @Degenskonto Yes? Otherwise it wouldn't be my portfolio, would it :S

  • @TokyoZeplin I wasnt quite sure of what a portolio was, It could have "just" been the layout n stuff, but youve taken all the pictures in it and everything?

  • @Degenskonto A portfolio is always a collection of work, in some shape or form. If it had just been the layouting, then it would have been just a book showcasing your layouting.

For the most part I don't take pictures (sometimes because I in the past lacked a good camera, other times because I need a picture of an elephant in a desert, a lot of times its just not practical), so like most designers I use stock photography.

  • @TokyoZeplin Well alright then! Thanks.

  • but if its for japanese university wouldn't the backside be the front and the front cover be the back?

  • @moomilkmon generally yes, but not necessarily.

  • Looks good. I'm sure you'll get in.

  • 顔がwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  • kinda like intern work... or voulenter work?!?!?5:35 is off the hook!!! i want that.... ill get you an autograph for it.... you been good an busy... i think its pretty cool too. acent is pretty good!

  • Holy crap! You're portfolio is amazing! So professional!

  • @xGuroDoLLx Just youtube book binding, and you'll get a pretty good idea. Sadly, you usually also fold pages and run some thread through them, but due to my A3 format that wasn't an option for me (I would have to have printed out in double-sided A2, which would have cost a buttload, and I couldn't find a printer that could do that anyway), which is the main reason some of the pages aren't fitting good.

  • Nice... Good luck!!!

  • So. Professional. :O

my portfolio is so noob. T^T

  • @twinkieCee Yeah... but you aren't a Uni' design student either sweetie :P That forgives a lot :P

  • how xenophobic are the japanese towards south asians ( for instance me, im from pakistan)

  • Great work Zeplin. It looks professional.

  • Nice portfolio, good luck with your application. I like the real tape aspect :) What kind of Japanese level do you need to study there?

If I had to say something critical, I would say that the layout is very similar on all pages. Its a shame you didn't let each project or piece of work shout out in its own style a tad.

& funky British / Irish accent.

    Good luck again.

  • @karekora They require a "working level of Japanese". So really, you just need to sound fluent enough at the interview to make them think that you'll actually be able to understand your teachers.

There's around 30 different posters/pictures in the portfolio, meaning I would have to design 30 different layouts. Currently there's 3 layouts. I very much did/do not have time for that! Nor do I actually think that would look nice, a different layout on every page would look quite chaotic.

  • hey i deactivated my facebook cause GCSE's are coming up... but your portfolio looks great man.. how did you get it made?

  • @kinglynx I made it?

  • @TokyoZeplin i mean.... you didnt like...get an empty copy book and stick all the pictures in right? ... how did you get the pictures and everything in so professionally like it was your own published book?

  • @kinglynx I made the book like a bookbinder would :S Just search on youtube for "bookbinding" and you'll get a rough idea on how I did this (for the physical book that is).

  • oh dear. This is great, but I am so glad my graphic design school isn't making me do that....well...I think I would enjoy it if i knew what i was doing and knew how to make a book or its binding. then it would be fun. learning new things makes me nervous though -_-"

  • @Allisonratesvideos book binding really isn't all that hard, just search youtube for it. And I would certainly hope your school would teach you book/magazine layouting o0

  • @TokyoZeplin They do, I've designed pages, but it makes me nervous because reading the comments above I'm guessing I will have to make one. T-T" god help me.ha! I more so do illustrations for children's books so I do everything hand drawn and mostly just draw cartoon characters...but! its nice to know that it wont be that hard. ^o^ I'll have to put some of my work on my channel one day.

  • Wow, looks really good. Thanks for showing.

  • Ah I'm the kind of person that never takes the time to comment on your videos. I figured I would though because that really is amazing!

  • Oh, and your portfolio looks amazing!!! Oh and I can certainly tell you're not north american or australian, i would of guessed British or some other European country.

  • Hey, do you have a graphics card that's specifically made for video editing and other media-type stuff?

  • @xhyugunx You don't really need a strong graphics card for graphic/3d/motion design at all. The main thing these programs require is a crapperload of RAM. I'd actually say a strong graphics card would be one of the last things on the list to go for when thinking about what you should upgrade on a computer made for this type of stuff.

  • Would you consider making and selling those portfolio books? I really like your work and would probably buy 1.

  • @IRZephyrus Afraid that the cost of this one book is around 125USD, add shipping to that and you'd end up around 150USD, without even adding any profit, and that's just not something people would buy :P I will however soon'ish be making posters available online, among other things.

  • @TokyoZeplin

Ah, no idea it was that expensive XD thanks though.

  • @IRZephyrus Many of the posters are now available on RedBubble though, if your interested. There's a link in the description box.

  • It looks really nice. Good luck. =]

  • looks really good! good luck^^

  • i dunno if this would benefit you in any way, but you could use little QR-codes on your more informative pages to add interactivity with your portfolio. links to .jpegs or different versions of the same pictures or more infoz.

/watch?v=1hlMludeAno #i think this video should cover it.

    favourites>2:34 and 2:50

  • @harrei While that's certainly a funny idea, I'm not really sure where it would be actually beneficial to use them. The info I need is already there, and there's no point in giving a link to a picture that's already printed.

  • Hey your artwork is greatt!!!! I love art but I do more drawing 2D^^ (My art teacher makes me draw everything lol)~ But, yea I missed what the next collab video is....What is it again? LoL~

  • I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it, your portfolio is looking pretty sharp! I'm Australian and I would have assumed you were American or Canadian if I didn't know otherwise.

  • I think it looks fantastic. Good luck on getting into Grad School.

  • @Anzwerz142 Thanks. And at worst, I'll just take my Masters at my current school, I would just prefer to study abroad for some years of my education.

  • Goodluck! 頑張って!

  • Are a lot of those girls (especially ones in the end) photo manips, or did you draw them from scratch on the cintiq?

Also, that's quite an amazing Portfolia Zeplin! I really love the cover and the back, and the picture of the girl with her breasts exposed, but not for that reason. XD

  • @xXGaticaXx None of the people in the portfolio are drawn, which for design would also be pretty rare. Why waste time on making photorealistic drawings, when you could go take a picture?

  • @TokyoZeplin Great point. Why go the most time-consuming route? xD.

I was also wondering, the girl with fire hair... do the drapes match the carpet?

Aha haaa~ *raises hand for highfive* =D

    *never receives high five* :C

  • i have a question if you are not busy. you said ,in some of your other videos, many japanese and many other people think you are from america because your english is so good right? my question is, can americans pick up your accent and tell that you are not an american?

  • @goohsm Japanese people just generally think that white foreigners are Americans :P They certainly don't speak English well enough of hear any kind of difference.

I've never had anyone think I'm from a non-English speaking country, though for the most part people think I'm from a different one than they are. For instance, Americans think I'm British, Brits think I'm Australian, Aussies think I'm Canadian, Canadians think I'm American, and so on.

  • Great work, some of the best I've seen. The only thing you need to worry about is the quality of the portfolio, not the work itself. If it arrives there in 1 piece, there is no doubt you shouldn't get in.

  • Dude you have amazing art skills :)

  • Very cool stuff.

  • what if they find your philipzeplin channel and follow the link on there to here?

  • @icecoldwolf *gasp*

  • @TokyoZeplin lol that almost sounds sarcastic but i'm not quite sure :P
