  • First of all, let's remember that the audio is coming from small camera mics and secondly, that the audio gets squashed to hell (compressed) during FLV conversion for the site. Then there's the fact that the Summit had been played for 10 years and the Collings was seemingly brand new. Hardly a comparison to draw any hard and fast conclusions from. Both are stellar mandos. I've been picking a Summit Artist F for about 10 years now myself and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

  • I like the Collings sound better. I do like a "woodier" tone to the mando. Too bright and I start to hear "shrill" which can be louder but not very agreeable. Summits are superior mandolins as well as Collings so you can't go wrong with either.

  • to everyone who thinks they sound exactly the same, I suggest you click on the 2 points where he's playing each instrument, and alternate back and forth a few times. The Summit has a clearer ring.

  • The Summit does sound better.

  • I think the Collings is nice but doesn't quite make it. The Summit rings better and has a more pronounced chop. +1 for looks. Paul beat the machine this time... but where's the blue ox?

  • Summit sounds that same, but has a better aged sound

  • @bluegrasssingingman The Summit sounds like its a little brighter, and more vol.

  • Thanks for the interesting comparison. Both sound excellent of course... The Summit's a bit brighter and more focused; the Collings is deeper and "woodier". I prefer the latter kind of tone, but plenty of people prefer the former—it's purely a matter of taste.

  • Played guitar for 30 years...mandolin for 2....given the sound quality of the recording...the two are indistinguishable. Heard of Collings before...never heard of Summit.

  • They sound the same, but the collings would be a little bit cheaper wouldnt it? Summits are pretty pricey

  • @TheGibsonlover Paul has several levels for his A and F models. All things being equal, the Collings are priced higher.

  • @fodera6 Then I would rather have a Summit. haha. But I guess its more of a status symbol if you can get a Collings.

  • I've played music my whole life (well, not yet), and they sound identical to me.

  • summit has better treble collings has better bass

  • I just played a Summit yesterday at Gryphon Strings. Now I want one. Awesome sound!

  • I have a Summit which I love, but now I want a Collings too!

  • Thanks for the comparison. That Summit sounds LOUD!
