  • s e r i o u s l y thinking about doing this .

  • noooooooo why u cut the locs? dammmmm girl

  • how did u wear ur hair while u were taking them down, as far as style wise?

  • Love those lips. Juicy.

  • Hi Shawnta, I'm a avid watcher of ur videos :-). I have been growing my locs for about 12 years now and just recently cut them to shoulder length. I have been debating on taking them down for about 2 years now but am terrified of the whole process. Can my locs even be taken down after so many years? or would it be easier just to cut them all off (not really feeing the bald look tho). Help me Shawnta Please. Thanks in advance :-)

  • @bodyluvu , I am in the same boat! I've had my locs for 12 years now and have been wanting a "new look" but very scared. After watching Shawnta's process and results I finally got the courage, I've started the process about a week now, I've taken down the very back only so far (because of my work I can't wear hats or wraps) so I have to do this right.. Good luck with your decision, my only fear is maintaining my natural hair afterwards : ( Let me know how it goes...Peace!

  • i liked the locs on her better but still beautiful tho

  • why you take them out

  • thank you for your demonstration u nailed it

  • Hey Shawnta,

I picked a loose about 20 out of my 106 locs with the intentions of taking all of them a loose. I changed my mind and decided to keep my beautiful crown locked. The problem is I have loose hair on the ends now. I have been two strand twisting the loose ends. Do you have any suggestions on what I could do with the loose ends?

  • how long does your have have to be in order to start your locks

  • I have seen this one girl who had locks for years. It took weeks but she did it and her hair was beautiful

  • I love love love your skin! :-)

  • Girl you should do a video on your tattoos, from what I can see they are beautiful :o). My question: mine are palm rolled/ finger twisted, so therefore would it be easier for me to pick them out??????

  • Say luv u lookin real hot

  • APPLE CIDER VINEGAR is an absolutely perfect rinse for gunk build up and it makes your hair really fluffy and soft. Don't worry the smell only lasts a few minutes..

  • @ch3m6 Thanks I am going to try this TODAY!

  • if i take them out and decide later on down the line that i want them back would i have cut my hair off and start from scratch

  • Thank u so much for this hun!!! I'm gonna get started on mine when I get home today...

  • will a hair dresser do the dreads?

  • it is a process... when I first had locks i picked mines out with a rat tail comb.

  • What if I have sisterlocks? I want so badly to remove them, but they are so small! Help!

  • I think it can be done but it is a matter of patience. With sister locs or interlocking I think it should be just like undoing a knot. I know my smaller locs really tested my patience but I'm sure it can be done.

  • Thanks for the reply, but I shaved my head yesterday! I will just wear a wig until it grows!

  • oh! wow! i feel you! taking out sister locs is a lot of work. i really don't blame you.

  • @lafemmenaturelle...ha! patience my sister. i feel for you.

  • @lafemmenaturelle I have micro locks started with braids. I have used a dental pick purchased from the toothbrush section at walmart to open my locks. You have to work slowly.

  • @lafemmenaturelle I took out my sisterlocks...how long have u had them?

  • @lafemmenaturelle I have sister locks also. They are extremely tiny. I would rather cut them out and start from scratch. I'm lucky in that my hair grows rather quickly. I know there are a lot of people that want to keep the length. so they would not opt for that.

  • Girl, I'm gonna need to have your skin regimen like STAT!!!

    lol.

    Beautiful.

  • Locs or no locs I still love the hair!!!!

  • ur tattooos are very pretty

  • The same way 'yuh don't haffe dread to be rasta'.you don't haffe rasta to dread! Some people don't want to have locs because of religion. For me it's just about not puttin chemicals in my hair any longer & doin what I think is right for my hair!

  • i am amazed that your head is not throbbing

  • uhmm thatss whyy people get dreads now a dayys ;for style and fashionn! duhhr..and what about jah rastafari and haile selassie i?! what did that have to do with anything?!

  • Locks were originally a rasta tradition and a holistic lifestyle went along with it. Please research....

  • great hair either way

i might want to loc my hair in a few years just to see how it will grow

  • Last time I took out mine, I basically cut them off save an inch or two. Thank god I can do that without cutting them.

  • OMG, havent seen you for a while almost didn't recognize you. I'm on here looking for hairstyles for my locs and thought of you and here you go and picked your out. Your hair looks great, so i see this can be done. i'm 5 years in and i'd know if i'd have the patience to pick mine out.

  • i'm not one to criticize but what was your reason for taking out the dreads....dont get me wrong it looks nice i'm just curious

  • cool! So whenever i want to take my locs out, I can?? wow! So what is the state of the hair-health wise- afterwards?

  • wow taking out your locks is a very tedious process

  • your hair is pretyy...are u still natural?

  • Yes I'm still natural.

  • ooh i thought so. it is very nice and in a very lovely style =]

  • u look cooo w/o yo locs...how long did it take all 2gther to get them all out??

  • 3 weeks

  • my ex-girlfriend has been wanting 2 "pick" mine out for 2 yrs... i may let her do a couple.. i have 130.. so i may try 1-3 a day!! thanks 4 the inspiration

  • yes ,Very sexi

  • i do not knock your personal choice, BUT, you look so much more original with your locs. you stood out.

  • Obviously patience is a virtue that you was blessed with. Three weeks!!!! I looks great!!

  • wow dats cool i thought the only way to get lock out of ur head is to cut dem but i don't think u should hav cut dem dey were pretty well im neva cuttin mines im dreaded fah life rastafari mon vibration its the way of life fah me ya dig

  • While I am still very new to locing.. only a little over a year in and cannot imagine a time will come when I would want to take my locs down, this is good information you have provided. Your hair looks very healthy.

  • really informative thx ^_^

  • LOL! I did this recently with my locs that occurred from me not combing my hair. I needed you!! :) Thanks for sharing the process.

  • i like her more with locs

  • Is your hair relaxed and what is your method now 4 your hair

  • this is so helpful, thanks!!

  • Thank u sis. I have been doin that 2, well at least I am sort of on the right track. Just gotta go through the fire to get to the water. Thank u girl.

  • oh no! latched locs are harder to take down than palmrolled?! right now my hair is half n half. started off palmrolling and switched to latching. that means i'm in for a major fight when i start to take out the hear closer to my roots!

  • lol its true its harder but it can be done I took out just two of my palmrollrd/latched locks it took quiet a while but I got there in da end ;-)

  • 3 weeks!!! WHOA!!! well you're hair still looks great!

  • Wow Shawnta! i can't believe you did it. But you're still beautiful no matter what! I love your tats they are gorgeous! Right on lady! Gonna miss the loc tutorials :-( Blessings!

  • HELP!!! Any suggestions on how 2 survive this "baby stage" where my locks r sooo short, a headwrap is not an option 4 my job, I tried it and they wanted 2 send me home so I just removed it, I have lots of wigs but it gets hot and I am feeling really ugly most of the time, is this the way it is gonna be 4 the next few years until I get some length???

  • I like the vids, but can i see the tattoos? Not on no perv type shh...lol I just like tattoos

  • I agree In her other videos with locs we never got to see the Tattoes, I wonder if theyre new?

  • Well, the one on her left arm looks like she's getting a sleeve done. I forgot what its called but i see the fish. Like a Japanese tatt. I just couldnt see the shoulder joint. just curious...lol

  • coyfish is what its called. Its a popular tat. Has a special symbolic meaning. But I don't know what that meaning is.

  • It's 'koi', actually. In East Asian mythology, the koi fish are supposed to eventually jump out from the water and transform into a dragon, so I guess people like to reference this tattoo design as a form of change, a new beginning.

  • thank you. =)

  • Is your hair natural now or did you get a relaxer? Has your hair textured changed from now to before you had locks(in thickness, is it fuller, coarser than before)? While you were taking your hair out (since it took 3 wks) did you wear wigs or something to work? The reason i'm askin is b/c i may have to take mine out when i join the Navy after school in 4yrs and i know it'll take a while for me to take them down.

  • Your locs were long as I dont no wat but you look good no matter how yo hair is.

  • how did you wear your hair in between the taking out stage?

  • Yeah, thats the big question! i'm tinkering with the idea of taking down my locs but i don't know what to do with my hair for the two or three week transition process! please share!

  • i'd throw a hat over that shyt lol

  • why you took out your loc's?

  • wow 2009 is take out your loc's i came across 25 vids of peeps that took out there loc's ... i took out my loc's in 2007 .. so i am a head of time. wow. i remember the only reason i subscribe to you was for your locs. now look. we both have grown.

  • Glad 2 c u back on yt little lady, so how r u enjoying your loose hair? Do u think that u will "loc it up" again n the future?? U look Beautiful either way cuz ur beauty shines from the inside out. PEACE.

  • Well its a learning process, but I am enjoying it. I will probably loc my hair again, but that will probably be a couple of years from now.

  • hey ur hair looks beautiful locked and unlocked =] so how long exactly did it take to pick out ur locs completely??

  • 3 weeks

  • @Shawnta715 I think I counted about 5 times you've had to say "3 weeks" lol

  • Love your Tats... what are they... I couldn't even pay attention to what you were saying trying to figure out those TATS LOL!

  • omg i guess you got alot of patience i bet that took longer than putting micros in someones head

  • whats up with everyone cutting their locs off???

  • I had braids then locs my hair started to break so I cut it but my hair has receeded better yet it doesnt evenly grow now got any tips for regrowth of hair that was constanly pulled back by braids

  • I personally I put Jamaican black castor oil on my temple area which was one of my trouble spots. If you have breakage in the length of your hair you may need to fortify it with some protein treatments like Ahrogee 2minute one or the 2 step protein treatment, or Aubreys Organics GPB is another good one. Roux Mendex is also a very good conditioner to help stop breakage.

  • do you think people treat or look at you differently, now that you don't have locs?

  • Those in the senior or 50 yro+ black community seem to be more accepting of me without my locs, but then I scare them away with the tattoos :)

  • ahh man. i liked the locs..oh well. why didn't you just cut it all off and have a short shave?

  • Cause I've had a short shave before. Didn't necessarily want to do it again, but I probably would have went on ahead and done it if my hair was really damaged from the take down.

  • your tattoos are beautiful

  • Thank you, they are a work in progress.

  • Considering the length of you late locs, do you think that you lost alot of length in the take out process?

  • Technically if your hair grows 6inches a year my locs should have been 3 feet and 6 inches long and they were not. Another thing to consider is that a loc is made up of dead hair so really your length is the hair that you can not shed. When finished my hair was mid back length but uneven so I recently cut about 5 inches off to even it out. My locs were not even so I couldn't expect even-ness in my loose hair lol. Considering most chop off all their hair from locs I'm happy to have what I have.

  • You should definitely be happy to have what you have lol I know that locs are composed of mostly shed hair that is trapped. I was just thinking in terms of what came out that DIDN'T have a white bulb at the end of the hair. Did you feel any new hair was lost in the process I should say lol. I love the curls on you and I am glad you proved me right cause I told others that you CAN remove locs without cutting them off. :o)

  • I didn't lose any hair from the root actually!!

  • you look gorgeous either way.

  • u look different! nice :)

  • If it works well for you, just make sure you are diligent about your washing and rinsing.

  • Thanks for the info!

  • I am from the V.I. and grew up around rastas. I never heard of picking them out just shaving the head.

  • How long did it take you to take all of them out? Did you cut them in half or did you take them out from the end? You hair looks beautiful! I love the curls!

  • It took 3 weeks and I did cut them up to about mid-back before I begin taking them down.

  • i like that tan miss missy!

  • I have gotten a lil crispy this summer lol

  • Chile, folks spend big bucks of mac msf to look "a lil crispy" ...wait aint chu one of em? lol

  • I do love my msf!!!! So Ceylon could probably be my foundation at this point lol I don't have anything on in the video though.

  • I never knew you could take them out until Fauryn78 took hers out. How long did it take for you to get them all out? Your hair looks good !

  • 3 weeks , but I was really taking my time.

  • omg!! you took your locs out!! msbutterfly tooks her out too, i took mines out last year after 5 years i may just keep them out, i love the natural look, your hair is pretty! will u ever get your locs back or just leave them out?

  • I will probably start another set, but it probably will be a ways away.
