I know the game hasn't been released yet and the specs are in the development period (people are guessing the specs will be close to games like Aion, Old Republic, and Champion's Online), but I am looking to buy a new laptop for Guild Wars 2 when it comes out. Do you think this laptop would be able to handle it, and if not, what would be an affordable laptop to buy for it? (I don't want to buy an Alienware because I don't have the money to throw at one. Hoping to spend only a little over $1000.)
If you encounter one of these with a 9 Cell battery. How long would it last on the "Power Saver" setting (If it has one. I've seen it on other models the you reviewed such as the 15z.) while running a web browser (Bluetooth turned off.) With brightness at medium. But it would still be interesting to hear results from the 6 cell as well. Thank you for the review, I found it to be informative and well rounded. :)

beast of a laptop - I have i7 2670qm, 1080p matte screen, dvd drive, 1TB hard drive, 8 GB RAM, 2mp webcam, Nvidia Geoforce gt 555m graphics card. Runs virtaully most games at great frame rates, runs video editing software, 3d modelling, rendering, animation and most applications very fast. The speakers are very good for a laptop and its battery life is quite good. I seriuosly reccomend this laptop. I got mine with the above specs for £850/$1348 and it was new.

Got the laptop with everything maxed out - Core i7 2720QM processor, 12GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB 7,200 rpm HDD, Nvidia GeForce GT 555M with 3GB VRAM and Optimus Technology and a 3D capable Blu-ray reader. I use the laptop for graphic designing, web designing and gaming. I am very satisfied with its performance.
I have enrolled in robotics in our school and my dad accidently stepped on my EXTREMELY expensive Alienware M18x I do not have the funds to get a system with the memory or power to be able to support the programming that our school gives us to allow our creations to think and to move. No mention of the fact that the 3d version has no Intel graphics and so is permanently running on the Nvidia chip. This makes the battery life they mention pretty good, but it is better on the optimus versions lasting much longer. And the only review I have heard saying the sound is not that good, other have mentioned the speaker placement but have gone on to say the sound is impressive (which it is).
@monstaslaya Yes, pretty well. Just look for videos on youtube of the graphics card playing it and that is the performance you can expect (the GT 555m version is the best to go for, it does have more power).

I bought this laptop for 1,000 pounds. and i dont have antyhing bad to say about it, the audio is a meh because ill be using my nice headphones for the best audio or the real audio set with big bass.
Only one think im a bit disapointed and its my fault, when i ordered it i took the 1600x900 screen, and for extra 70 pounds i could of taken the 1920x1080 screen
but really this is a good laptop and up to date its better than most of my friends' dekstops.
This lap top is cool. Too bad it seems that the HDMI port won't spit audio as well as video. But this is my favorite one never the less. My orignal favorite one was the Studio XPS16. Too bad they got rid of it. I loved that lap top.

My XPS has a bigger battery than the one shown in the video. The battery lifts the back of the PC up, letting air under and that way it doesnt heat up so much :)
@MeBeMat It must be the 6-Cell Battery. The 9-Cell Battery is a lot bigger than the one shown in the Video. I ordered mine today, i hope it will be here before Christmas :)

Just another example of how gaming ruined the computer culture. There is no firewire to be found on this. What's the point of sandy bridge and Nvdia if you can't even transfer video you shoot or host an strong recording sound card? All that power to watch movies? and yet not enough for Batman or Skyrim? What the hell is wrong with the computer industry?
The Dell XPS 17 has 2 USB 3.0 slots on the back. USB 3.0 has already proved to be far superior and more reliable then Firewire not to mention the speed advantage. In real world conditions USB 3.0 has about 4 times the speed of Firewire800 and about 8 times the speed of Firewire400. Google USB 3.0 vs Firewire and search for PqlqCoQMLsQ on youtube.
@airdog99 Oh trust me Airdog. You're preaching to the choir on this one. You just need to tell people at Canon, and Sony, who make their capture STILL off firewire. And here's the kicker, you know how cams have a slot of still pictures? That (and only that) use the usb plug! For everything else firewire is still the standard. And trust me I am no fan of firewire. However, if this is to be a real editing machine it needs to be compatible with major cameras.
@TheFaustianMan I guess I do have agree with you. All of my Sony and Canon video cameras have Firewire on them. I usually just pull the card from my Canon 20D DSLR and plug it into a card reader. Dell probably cou;d have found a little space on the back edge of the XPS for a Firewire port. If not the 6 pin, at least a 4 pin plug like I have on my eMachines M6809 laptop (circa 2003). Well, I guess they are "pushing" us towards the USB 3.0 faster than most people are ready for...
I reckon this is the best laptop I have been looking for. I'm a person who likes playing games and also watching movies; it really does meet your need in this technology world.

Does it have a backlit keyboard? I wonder if you could run some actual benchmark programs like Passmark... or in game bench test results? This would really help people with a laptop already decide on upgrade decisions. Your five-star rating system is a bit subjective. It would be better to see some actual results from benchmarks printed at the end of your videos. I'm just saying.
@Mystifiedromantic well I love it, I have the 9 cell battery so its pretty decent, plus has the ability to vent air better for the processor it is slightly better than this one on the video...check my channel i uploaded a vid testing a game on high/ultra graphics.
Something important to note about this review is that alot of the features he has are all added on top of the already high price. At base price the XPS 17 is $899.99. Then if you add the blu-ray drive, 1080p screen, 3D and get the i7 version your looking at more around $1,300 to $1,500. However there is a $150 off coupon for all XPS 17 going on untill the end of next month.
i have an issue with this laptop all my fn key work except for the f3 that disables the touch pad. when i press the fn3 it turns on the light but still i can use the touch pad anyone knows how to fix this?

what if you're not a gamer? Might occasionally use it for movies. I want to upgrade my old pc to something with a powerful processor and good memory (and possibly something better than standard video card). The dell xps seems to offer great parts for the price. but will the glossy screen be annoying for work - programming? it seems it does reflect easily even indoors. is the vostro 3750 for example a safer choice with AG screen..
Here is another problem with the laptop, when it is shipped to you in a RAIN SOAKED BOX with water droplets on the 3.0 ports!!!!! To be fair though, that was UPS's fault, not Dells, and Dell was very helpful in getting it sorted out. On a lighter note, I am typing this on that very laptop!
@opli852 I have bought and returned it. I would recommend you to check Nvidia forums under Optimus section. You can see that this stuff is currently flawed and everybody is waiting for Nvidia to release yet another fix for it since the solution they released did not solve anything.
@opli852 The xps 17, while more money, is probably better for gaming. Bigger screen and if I remember correctly it has better graphics card options on Dell's website.
@opli852 The 17 inch is bigger (Which is more fun for gaming), supports higher resolutions than the 15", supports better video cards (555M), and supports 3D. So the 17" is better for gaming :)

I bought this laptop for 1,000 pounds. and i dont have antyhing bad to say about it, the audio is a meh because ill be using my nice headphones for the best audio or the real audio set with big bass.
Only one think im a bit disapointed and its my fault, when i ordered it i took the 1600x900 screen, and for extra 70 pounds i could of taken the 1920x1080 screen
but really this is a good laptop and up to date its better than most of my friends' dekstops.

This lap top is cool. Too bad it seems that the HDMI port won't spit audio as well as video. But this is my favorite one never the less. My orignal favorite one was the Studio XPS16. Too bad they got rid of it. I loved that lap top.

I bought this laptop after watching your review, and I have to say i love it! i am an architecture student and mostly use this laptop for renderings and such,, I also bought NVIDIA 3d vision glasses but I didn't really try it until today. Question is, I knwo glasses work on games but can I watch regular movies in 3D with some 3rd party player? and how to do so? kindly reply :D

My XPS has a bigger battery than the one shown in the video. The battery lifts the back of the PC up, letting air under and that way it doesnt heat up so much :)

@MeBeMat It must be the 6-Cell Battery. The 9-Cell Battery is a lot bigger than the one shown in the Video. I ordered mine today, i hope it will be here before Christmas :)

hey i m gonna buy a new laptop for gaming, now i was thinking between dell xps 17 3d (3gb of gt555m) and alienware m14x (1.5gb of gt555m).
since i prefer performance overlooks should dell be my choice rather than alienware

Just another example of how gaming ruined the computer culture. There is no firewire to be found on this. What's the point of sandy bridge and Nvdia if you can't even transfer video you shoot or host an strong recording sound card? All that power to watch movies? and yet not enough for Batman or Skyrim? The Dell XPS 17 has 2 USB 3.0 slots on the back. USB 3.0 has already proved to be far superior and more reliable then Firewire not to mention the speed advantage. In real world conditions USB 3.0 has about 4 times the speed of Firewire800 and about 8 times the speed of Firewire400. Google USB 3.0 vs Firewire and search for PqlqCoQMLsQ on youtube.

@airdog99 Oh trust me Airdog. You're preaching to the choir on this one. You just need to tell people at Canon, and Sony, who make their capture STILL off firewire. And here's the kicker, you know how cams have a slot of still pictures? That (and only that) use the usb plug! For everything else firewire is still the standard. And trust me I am no fan of firewire. However, if this is to be a real editing machine it needs to be compatible with major cameras.

@TheFaustianMan I guess I do have agree with you. All of my Sony and Canon video cameras have Firewire on them. I usually just pull the card from my Canon 20D DSLR and plug it into a card reader. Dell probably cou;d have found a little space on the back edge of the XPS for a Firewire port. If not the 6 pin, at least a 4 pin plug like I have on my eMachines M6809 laptop (circa 2003). Well, I guess they are "pushing" us towards the USB 3.0 faster than most people are ready for...

"cool during use" (6:42)? i thought the xps17 had major issues with overheating (or at least badly designed, inefficient cooling, resulting in higher hardware temperatures than necessary)

Does it have a backlit keyboard? I wonder if you could run some actual benchmark programs like Passmark... or in game bench test results? This would really help people with a laptop already decide on upgrade decisions. Your five-star rating system is a bit subjective. It would be better to see some actual results from benchmarks printed at the end of your videos. I'm just saying.

@Mystifiedromantic well I love it, I have the 9 cell battery so its pretty decent, plus has the ability to vent air better for the processor it is slightly better than this one on the video...check my channel i uploaded a vid testing a game on high/ultra graphics.

Something important to note about this review is that alot of the features he has are all added on top of the already high price. At base price the XPS 17 is $899.99. Then if you add the blu-ray drive, 1080p screen, 3D and get the i7 version your looking at more around $1,300 to $1,500. However there is a $150 off coupon for all XPS 17 going on untill the end of next month.

This Laptop is amazing, it is probably the most powerful laptop you can buy, intel core i7 4GHZ, 16GB DDR3 RAM, 3GB Nvidia GT 550m 3D graphics card, 1TB Hard drive, 17.3 inch LCD LED 3D Screen for £1500 for any other laptop with that kinda spec, you would have to fork out over £3000 !!! im buying this laptop, il put a review and unboxing up soon :)

what if you're not a gamer? Might occasionally use it for movies. I want to upgrade my old pc to something with a powerful processor and good memory (and possibly something better than standard video card). The dell xps seems to offer great parts for the price. but will the glossy screen be annoying for work - programming? it seems it does reflect easily even indoors. is the vostro 3750 for example a safer choice with AG screen..

Here is another problem with the laptop, when it is shipped to you in a RAIN SOAKED BOX with water droplets on the 3.0 ports!!!!! To be fair though, that was UPS's fault, not Dells, and Dell was very helpful in getting it sorted out. On a lighter note, I am typing this on that very laptop!

@opli852 I have bought and returned it. I would recommend you to check Nvidia forums under Optimus section. You can see that this stuff is currently flawed and everybody is waiting for Nvidia to release yet another fix for it since the solution they released did not solve anything.
