what books do you all get this information from? Because I have 3 different versions of this blooper, none makes sense. after this ends there is more of just her laughing and trying to say something...you dont hear people in the background.
@TEMPmichaelhansen Virginia is "answering he mail" & is reading a letter from Mrs c.s. who writes "her husband was not coming home and giving her the marital devotions. Perhaps this is a sign of sterility or...Now listen Mike Wallace, you son-of-a-bit*h! Mike Wallace trys to cut away to music, but she says"No, I will continue" and then loses it. Mike Wallace stormed off the set.
@TEMPmichaelhansen Mike Wallace did get her back. At a luncheon, he asked for her opinion on some scripts. She would barely glance at them, making small comments about what she liked, or which one was better. Wallace then told her he had been handing her them same piece of paper for a 1/2 hour. What was written on it made no sense. The others at the table were quite amused. I have this on audio cassette.
Found online: "Mike would try to break her up while she read. To get even, with everyone's help, she pre-recorded the letter and pretended to do it live. Wallace began his usual stuff. She became ever more annoyed, frowning and gesturing for him to back off. He didn't, so she stopped and called him an SOB, told him what she thought of him. Mike came on and tried to apologize for the both of them. After letting him suffer a moment she breaks up in hysterics…it was recorded and it is a classic."
Virginia Graham was funny as hell. I met her twice, when she did the dinner-theatre circuit in Florida, in the late 1970's and early 1980's. Very witty. She was a talk-show host who never reached super-stardom, like Oprah, but should have. Her big claim to fame was the 1960's series, "Girl Talk". Someone once remarked that she sounded like Sophie Tucker imitating Carol Channing!
That is so great!

This is quite funny. Could anyone, by chance, have some old clippings of Virginia's show "Girl Talk?"

I found the story on a website called :
NBC Radio "Monitor" - Broadcasting 101
As for the tape with the longer version, I got it years ago. I think it was part of the Naked Microphone set from Radio Yesteryear.

In the longer version, she does call him a son of a bitch, and her laughter goes on for two or three minutes.

It's so funny to hear her cracking up .... now I'm laughing it up...!

Mike Wallace had no sense of humor back then. He was also a very manipulative interviewer. Conclusionary statements, stacked questions, you name it.

Too bad this isn't longer. She continues to lose it even more (Mike Wallace finally stormed out of the studio). This is circa 1957 to be exact.
