  • This song with another tune, in a Primitive Baptist tunebook in Sperryville, VA, was my introduction to the shape-note a capella subculture. It was one Sunday in a hewn-log worship cabin with hard wood backless benches, where the monthly visiting traveling preacher brought the events of Calvary into such lifelike reality that he and I both wept the whole time he was preaching!--- I still like the Primitive Baptist tune better. If I ever locate it, I will try to come back and post a link to it.

  • I'm from Opelika, Alabama, and have family all over the Piedmont -- Verbena, Calera, Selma... I love singing because I inherited it from my family, and though I'm not religious now, I regret never learning Shape Note Singing. I think I really must learn sometime.

  • Best get in touch with Jesus on that "not religious now" thing before it's eternally too late for you!

Listen to the message of these songs...

  • Oh enough with the fearmongering. The big flaw with southeners and their religious views. Y'all say you put your trust in God and Jesus. So let him handle it and chill out.

  • @ServusGrueziHallo Just so you know, not all Southerners think this way.

  • Good one! I'm sending a video response- same song, different group, different tempo. I like it both ways. Thanks for posting!

  • You're right. A little different but a good song either way. Thanks.
