There are a lot more people without crazy autistic gifts that could rival his intelligence with a good education. When I tried to move to more advanced classes in middle school they said my grades weren't good enough. A little more than a year into high school I was getting 100's on mid-terms, and in college it is sad to see how ignorant people are. With better child-rearing from parents and a better education system even people who don't get such grades could be getting into college at this age
A lot of people over emphasize DNA, yes it is the building block, but this child also has drive, passion, a great attitude, and amazing support systems. People must realize that when you excersize your brain in various ways, that you willl improve skills invovled in intelect and intelligence, being born without exceptional skills does not mean you cannot develop them yourself.
Good for him. I hope he continues to succeed in his adulthood. And i hope he isn't hindered by people like some of these commenters who fear intellectuals.
On the one hand, he's a normal kid, who gets his kicks doing normal things like video games and probably sports, and his parents don't have to pay whatever expenses aren't paid by scholarships to send him to college before he's even masturbated.
On the other hand, he's not able to rake in 10s of thousands of dollars for his parents, isn't known locally by hundreds if not thousands of people, and didn't get a dateline special about him. Christmas will be awkward.
@quimbyt i meant that the idea behind the character of Wesley, at least in the first season, was that he was a genius kid who could understand higher dimensions and mathematics beyond anyone else
HELL its not a fear of math. i just cant remember ANYTHING i learn. mostly numbers. i would do like 3 math questions then start to imagine stuff (funny stuff) and then look back down at my paper and go OH CRAP I FORGOT HOW TO DO THIS! it happened alot.
He is suppose to be all smart, but instead of showing him do tests to show that they just keep talking about it over and over. Shut your mouth and put it to the test. Action speak louder than words. I want to see him do stuff not hear about his memory.
He's going to get laid at age 20, then he'll start experimenting with drugs to "enhance" his thinking... he will go down a dark road... by age 30 he will be a greeter at Walmart... divorced twice... and trying to make child support payments.
It's not arrogance in the way you'd think. If he's autistic, then to him it's just a matter of fact, not something that makes him think he's better than others.
@duderanch18237 He SHOULD be humbled in some aspects of life...like for example: suppose he is proven wrong on a theory he comes up with, yet he continues to act as though he is right, and everyone else is wrong, even though that theory that he came up with has been proven time and time again that its wrong. That would humble him. Now, if he was absolutely right in a theory that he has proven, don't you think he has that right to be prideful? He did something no one else did.
He's good at memorizing and taking the knowledge he knows to problem solve only problems that he can solve with what he knows.
In all honesty, I don't see this kid attempting to actually come up or truly solve anything that can't already be solved via "common sense." (Common sense in, really fucking smart scientist thinking.)
Know what's funny? I can't think of a truly innovative technology made by a kid "genius". They were all made by engineering teams of typical people. I think they're just curiosities more than amazing leaders of industry.
People didn't hate Wesley because he was smart; they hated him because he was a teenager who was often more capable than the experienced, qualified crew of the flagship of the Federation; supposedly the best of the best. Plus he would get special favors, like the helmsman's position just because his mum was the captain's love interest!
Good luck to Jake. I think he's going to have a hard time later in life though. Will also be difficult not to feel superior around us 'normals.
@balenceofterrore1 this is what Wesley originally supposed to be, a boy genius. unfortunately they turned his character into an annoying brat who couldn't even pass the academy exams
Yeah I found some videos of his kid while back. What I wonder is whats its going to be like in 20+ years from now for him? Wonder if he'll invent something or do research that leads to some breakthrough as significant to progress as the transistor that would be pretty boss.
On the plus side, he'll have no trouble remembering that LONG security code you need to lockout the enterprise. You know, the one Data used in Brothers
@LechuCzechu I only hope he won't turn out to be like those genetically engineered guys in DS9 who thought they were better than normal people and thought they should decide things for everyone else
@enkopingsbo hehe yeah. I had the friend at school who was incredibly smart and able academically. Straight A student. Then he turned 18 and just wanted to drink and hang out with girls. He actually did pretty badly in his final exams.
