As much as I love 'em, I don't think any of the classic muscle cars ran 12s in stock form, and damn few would break into the 13s. Tires were a big limiting factor. Sure, some magazines had tests with faster times, but most of those cars were ringers, specially supplied by the manufacturer for testing. Using 4:10 or 4:30 rear ends helped, but made for an unpleasant trip for anything more than 25 miles or so.
@hobbeekid haha kid your a joke are you the typical civic wanna be. if so tune up your civic all you want and it wont compare to the 440 under the hood. lets see a video of your car if you got somethin good ill shut up if not then stop actin like you got every other muscle car by the balls
If i won the lottery, i'd have a racing strip so we can race without having to do this & worry about getting caught by 5\0. It would be cool to have bikes, bmx bikes, trucks, etc just out burning leather. I'd advertise for a few states over. The old classics are beautiful.
Car noobs: There is nothing magical about old or new cars. Both can have similar suspension, power, gearing, and aerodynamic properties. Performance is not a factor if you've got the money - it's about style. Do you want old school style or new/futuristic? Look at the Optima Ultimate Street Car Challenges and tell me an old car can't perform as well as a new one. Performance enthusiasts usually make the classic cars trounce anything from Vettes to Skylines and yes, that includes in the corners.
I have a '68 Charger 383 car and an '07 Hemi Charger. I love the '68, it is my dream car. But comparing it to the '07 is simply not fair. Automotive engineers are some of the most intelligent people on the planet, so you have to understand the improvements and enhancements they can and did generate over 39 years. Yes, today's cars are much better. But no one is going out of their way to see an '07 Charger. Whenever I have my '68 out I need a slobber rag for all of the drool
sweet! pure muscle from Ma MoPar, she knew what she was doing when she made these.
13's and 12's of the factory floor, awesome.
and for the rice lovers out there, the 13's and 12's were done with nothing more than a decent cashaft and twin carbies, none of this turbo whizbang, more boost than you can poke a stick at crap. just good old fashioned power and torque. LOVE IT!
the dodge jumped the start :| these guys were just playing around for the camera.
I own a 69 plymouth GTX and i dont know nor do i plan on finding out how fast that car is. ive had it up to 180 mph @3/4 throttle. its scarry smooth I know it would just go till she blows. 200 mph + i had a guy bragging on how fast his ferrari was i told him i would take him on for 5 miles just for fun ...he shut his mouth when i pulled my car from behind the buildiing.
That guy in the roadrunner clearly drove off outside the line, and it looks like he kicked up a bunch of dust and dirt and s!@# behind the car. Both of these cars sound sweet when their pull'in away go'in down the track:):):):):)
440s are badass, Hemi's are cool but for some reason I'd rather have a 68 Road Runner, with the 383 dual quad, thing was nothin but motor and a police package suspension.
The guy in the closer lane jumped the start (he launched when the starter dude raised his hands, not swung them down)...and the guy in the far lane almost went into the weeds. Bad race! LOL
garyshoaf - Finally someone who knows what he's talking about. Yes- half way thru`69 both Road Runner and Super Bee could be ordered with the A12 package...also known as 6BBL for the RR and Six Pak for the Super Bee...
Yeah I thought at first the coronet jumped but after watching I think the roadrunner was snoozing. But all in all I think given the same driver experience the roadrunner should take it
gotta appreciate all cars weather it be import, muscle, exotic or whatever, they all have a majestic style. muscle cars are some of the most beautiful cars made. but i still prefer my s13 :)
Both very nice cars I own 2 69 super bees one is a 440 the other is a 383 both 4 speed cars. The 383 will get the 440 out of the whole every time and if you arnt on your game in the 440 you wont win in the 1/4 mile the stroke of the 383 winds so much faster now put them both at 30 miles an hour and see ya 383. NIce vid shit road to be racing on.
440 on the Dodge didn't mean it had a 440 in it. It was a model designation i.e. Coronet 440, Coronet 500 etc. Most came with a 273ci or 318, top option for the Coronet 440 was the 383 2bbl, Coronet 500, 383 4bbl. Anything bigger was special order only for the Coronet. Superbee had the 383 4bbl standard, Hemi optional, R/T had the 440 4bbl standard, Hemi optional. There were some 440 6 pac options starting in 69.
I'm kind of a Mopar "old fart". I would drool over their brochures back then to the point of memorizing the specs. If you had the money, most anything was available. I once saw a 67 Plymouth Belvedere 2dr,ht (not GTX or RR) with a Hemi & 4 speed, factory installed. With the "frog shit" green color, looked like your grandmother could have owned it. Those both look like solid low 15 second cars.
Why are so many "musclecar owners" liars and fools who refuse to accept progress, are living in a bygone, era and will resort to any tactic in order to promote what amounts to their religion? Compared to today, cars made 40 years ago drove like trucks, had horrid handling, terrible mileage, lousy build quality, were slower and less reliable. Any old codger's Cadillac CTS-V would beat those 2 trailer queens like a gong..
CTS is that another of the failing GM brands of the new improved era? I wonder how many CTS's will be around in 40 yrs. OH yea they really turn heads also, about as much as a 1992 grand-am
@hemiluver the 2010 cts-v's have 560 hp and 500 something torque. they are a total sleeper. Zr-1 suspension and 0-60 in 3.9 seconds. I love classic cars but give respect where its due.
@56oldssuper88 My point still stands 556 hp or not. Yes very impressive to say the least-but never a classic!!! I own a blown 68 roadrunner with 680hp so I know a thing or two about classics. I also know that in the day a Roadrunner went for about $3k which allowed the common man to own one. Not 65k starting price of the Government owned CTS
Besides you miss the point! Sure they handle poorly-thats what makes them fun!!! Ok heres the deal I'll by a $3500 67 Dart.I'll then put the another $54000 in the Dart to even the price. I'll run low 9's to your pathetic 12's and nobody will even look at your polished turd!
these cars weren'[t meant to handel in the corners, they are built for straight line racing.poor build? these cars are top of the line find my friend.15 sec?not. they were made to do 13 from the factory. aftermarket headers, carb and tires 11sec.
Hey I own a blown 440 68 roadrunner that runs 11's. Out of the factory no 383 roadrunners ran 13's and very few 440's got in the 13's. Hemis rans 13's. A 69 a12 440-6 pack ran 12.9. And yes your correct they dont handle. I was just giving another guy a rash who wastalkin imports. You can do a search of 50 quickest muscle cars on the net for the facts if you want. I used to also own a 69 340 dart back in 97 it ran 14's
What I love about the old 440's is no matter what package you ordered them in back then, they always had a ton of power. My buddy has an old 69 charger with a 426. But my Coronet is getting the 440 that is the floor of my shop. Its incredibly easy getting a lot of horsepower, but it's another thing getting it to hook up. Im thinkin a 411 gear, narrowed rear end, tubbed out with 10" slicks... Fiberglass fenders and hood up front to take a few pounds off.
@Metalhead0166 Its a torque monster for sure, in fact the 413 and 440 share the same stroke (3.75) Great for low end power/torque and acceleration, but not so much at higher revs. Our "RB" (Raised Blocks: 413 and up) can outrun a stockish Hemi until maybe 60ish (dependin g on the build). lol but with your future set up i think you'll do just fine lol. Good luck on your build.
oh, and i forgot to mention the 400ci big block as well.
@Metalhead0166 You don't have to Tub for 10 inch slicks in a 69-70 Charger/Coronet there is plenty of room for a 10 in that well. Just a thought in case cutting isn't required. I didn't do it in my 69 Bee. I run a 10 inch slick on the street sometimes and others opt for a 295/50/15 Street tire other times fits in the lip fine. I did roll the lip of the fender up very slightly though. That was better than cutting. Send me an E-Mail and I can shoot you a photo if you'd like.
i love old mopars too grew up with them. but dont be bashing gm. saw alot of z-28's smoke plymouth and dodge, just cause the driver was out of kindergarten, ok.

My father owned both. The RR was a 426 Hemi
and the Coronet was the 440 with I believe
a 2:90 rear end. The RR was definitely the launcher of the two but that coronet pulled
away hard at the top end. I remember
cruising across Illinois late at night
and that Coronet would purr along at
140mph easily for hours at a time.
That's when the law was "drive with care"
