Gosh, that cadenza just blows me away! I love how he hits a pedal tone at the bottom of one of the runs--wow! I wonder what other modern players could play that cadenza with such seeming ease.
I think you donot about tumpet so shot up!reversely ,maurice Andre is way way way Far to marsalis.the interpretation and most way way way Far is th eCadenza,in terms of difficulty, 10 to 3 in favor of Marsalis.you dont know trumpet yet..study!!!
yes your right, im not good in english compare to you, but when it comes to music or listening some trumpet players out there, im much better than you. i think you donot know about Trumpet!
@thi23db23 the fact that your opinion differs from my own does not in itself indicate which performance is superior. I think that it is important to note, however, that Maurice André is largely considered (by musical experts) to be the best classical trumpet player alive today. Wynton's talents lie more in the realm of jazz, funk, blues, etc.
In case you're interested, I actually play the trumpet, so I have a pretty good basis for judging the quality of a performance on this instrument.
@trumpetplayer444 I did not say Marsalis is superior too. I only say that in the hydn trumpet concerto that they play, Marsalis performance is far better than Andre. I really do not comment that way, but when I saw your comment and the word FAR better, that’s sad you know? I will admit, I’m a Marsalis fan, but I don’t comment the same like you. Now, on the hyden trumpet concerto, Could you tell me what is your basis, why you said Andre performance is FAR better than Marsalis?
@thi23db23 The primary difference between Marsalis's performance and that of André is the tone/style. While Marsalis's tone is somewhat harsh (more in the style of the funk and jazz he is accustomed to playing), André's is quite the opposite. He plays with a light, crisp, effortless air that is more controlled in terms of dynamics. Marsalis tends to lose control (slightly, mind you; he's one of the best trumpet players alive :D) in the higher range of the instrument, whereas André does not.
@trumpetplayer444You said tone of a trumpet. Sound or tone of a trumpet is the differencence. The tone of a trumpet does not only depend on his lips or how he blows a trumpet, that’s only 70% on how you compare a tone from the other tone. And the other 30% is in where you played or the treatment of the place where you recorded it unless, they are both in the same place, and then you can compare it (Acoustic Treatment). The place plays a very big role when it comes to sound or tone.
@trumpetplayer444 But Andre really has one of the best tone or probably best. I agree with you Andre has the edge over Wynton when it comes to tone, but not FAR. But in style, you judge Wynton from where he came from. Take note, he can never be awarded both in classical and Jazz if his Style is FAR from Andre. He is the modern classical right now. Even Nakariakov he is younger than Wynton, but I think he belongs to the Old Classical Style…
@trumpetplayer444 you said technique, I think Wynton has the edge, in Cadenza, in triple tonging, slurring, in lower and in upper register etc.. I beg to disagree that Wynton tends to lose control in upper register. That’s Wynton Modern Classical Style he has the lower and upper register with same tone and effortless technique and don’t forget the thrilling Cadenza. Andre cadenza even myself, I can do it also. Sorry to say that but I didLastly the overall impact, that why he's multiawarded
Met him a couple months ago. He is THE COOLEST person I've ever had the pleasure of speaking with. His classical chops aren't what they used to be, but I'm sure he could still pound out the Haydn as if it were nothing. He's an amazingly talented musician.
@JustUs8663 Its funny because I have read his book and he is one of the most humble people being in such a position. His ideals of humility and integrity are ideas that would make this world a much better place if they were just embraced. great man with a lot of will power.
This recording concurs them all. It is a victory over all “right” or “original” (one of them I have posted on my YouTube- I humbly subjugate to this rather than one I posted). Thanks and I hope many also share my impression!
Doesn't get any better than this guy. He's been tested by a reportoire far exceeding anyone elses limits. From the Mississippi Blues/Jazz to the High Renaissance and Baroque era of classical European music. If he's not master of his domain, than I don't know who is quite frankly! A Truly remarkable Trumpet player, musician, and American Musical Icon. I've been lucky enough to shake his hand. I felt as if I were in the presence of greatness! I was!
This concerto seems to be a large scale work comparing to some Haydn's harpsichord concertos, shoulder to shoulder to celo concertos. There is, of course, plenthy of humorous and cheerful moments I atribute to best of Haydn's music and Mr. Marsalis takes it to the very finale and cadenze playing "open" octaves- BEAUTIFUL!!!!

Wynton is definitely a boss. Proficient in both jazz and classical, (and everything in between, while often fusing the two seamlessly) he truly shows the universal appeal of all music to all people.
@DoninWhiting Uh, he's one of the best trumpet players in the world. So yeah, he's still playing. Age usually doesn't play a major factor. Look at the principle trumpet in LSO, he's getting up there in age and he's still killing it.
He went where he could be of good use and make an honest living. I think he accomplished all he needed to in both fields having been the only artist to win a grammy in both jazz and classical. What he is doing now is more about enjoyment.
Hardly no one knows Wynton among my peers and others, young and old,. I'm guessing because they don't follow jazz and he is not visible in the classical scene. In fact, kids know Alison Balsom to my surprise.
I heard his jazz and grammy or no grammy, it sucks. Probably because I don't like jazz as much, unless we are talking about big bands, dizzy, herby, eric, and so forth.
Thank you for being honest that you don't like jazz because Wynton is great as a jazz trumpeter also. If you look had enough you can find that he plays quite a bit of the big band, Dizzy, Armstrong and the like.
@genmaicha3; Actually Wynton started as a Jazz player. He just thought he'd toy around with Classical Music, as if it were something as ordinary as taking out the trash. Wow, talk about quick learners. A couple of master lessons and he's the best in the World! Not bad.
and, i've always wondered this, why is this piece difficult? i've thought it over and over but it seems to be easy it compared to flight of the bumblebee
It's because of all the technical aspects of the piece. I have played the Haydn Concerto hundreds of times and it doesn't get any easier. All you need for the Flight of the Bumblebee really is fast fingers. For this piece you need fast fingers plus much much more.

The solo towards the end, while amazing, just doesn't do it for me. I would prefer the cadenza to be more akin to that of a classical aria:
Should be more song-like.
I don't mean to detract from the man's playing: it is phenomenal, but the cadenza should be less 'insane.'
