  • She showed up at my fathers bar ( the Barbarossa ) one night to hear his version of Cod'ine. The bar was jam packed, and he was working the door. He never met her before and didn't know what she looked like, so he sent her away. She never saw him perform.

  • awsome, woodstock

  • Hmm, I do like the simplicity of this, but prefer the grittiness of The Charlatans version.

  • I saw her in 1969. Think it was at Bard College, north of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She had a whole rock band with her and they did everything from Rock to Blues to Folk to Country to Blue Grass to a few places far away. Will be a fan forever. Native American yes. Great Soul absolutely!

  • About those who drank codeine cough syrup which was easily available, not to mention using paregoric which was more like opium

  • @pdorn777 This song saved many from the fate of opium, but I lost many friends to it anyway.

  • My sweet Buffy...

  • The audience looks like a bunch of pricks not enjoying Buffy at all. I love you, Buffy!

  • @ZoranJoplin there diggin' to the point of silence, says much more if you ask me... wich you did'nt

  • @djboony pardon me for expressing myself, really. and you should improve your grammar, mister.

  • @ZoranJoplin i was doing likewise, heard this for the first time last nite.

  • big thanks for this up load

  • the best version is by the Litter then Donovan...but hey she wrote it so...

  • @rovamech Im with you on this one. Love the Litter version. Quicksilver Messenger Service is ok. Im not so crazy about Donovans version, thats ok. Though your on the money, Buffy wrote it, and sung it wonderfully, what a voice, what a song... Thanks

  • crazy good

  • Taurusaud - iTunes... unfortunately. Better yet, purchase the fucking LP at a record store that sells shit.

  • @emdaughtry2576 thanks for the suggestion. i have a feeling you have a good nose for shit.

  • where can i find an mp3 of buffy playing the whole song? please help if you know. thanks.

  • @Taurusaud You can buy her CD with all her best material on it. BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE - Soldier Blue - The Best Of The Vanguard Years (2010)

  • woaw! it wasn't until i finished watching this video that i realized it was you, Master Dog! loll. well, im such in a good mood, im fixing to play this. gods help me ;)

  • It's spelled "Codeine".

  • @forensmith she has purposely spelled it cod'ine

  • @forensmith incorrect, the original is spelled exactly as title reads here.

always a good idea to check facts..

  • @forensmith The original written by Buffy Sainte-Marie was spelled “Cod’ine”.

  • The Native people need more people like Buffy and less scum bags like Daniel Richard Wolfe

Way to be a role model Buffy.

  • loved it!

  • happy 70th birthday Buffy it was honor to meet you in Ottawa you are an inspiration!

  • Buffy please stay with us forever!

  • Grandmother of this song with a million admires. Joyous x

  • has anyone got the tab for this?

  • @leojbx Google lyrics chords Codeine Buffy St. Marie. Tab on a-z chords, but not complete lyrics (and misspelled as codine; It's codeine. For cmplt lyrics follow mudcat link and scroll down. all there

  • I like Courtney Love's version better, but it is because it is too soft for me.

  • @skribbleh Have listened to Courtney Love and its quite good in its own way - a heavier sound but more shallow than Buffy, who I think manages to wring the real soul out of it.

  • Never heard this song before tonight. This is absolutely incredible tune.

  • extremely powerful. she sometimes sings as if she is on the verge of tears.

    beautiful video.

    :)/:(

  • @VioletTwylite WHAT???!!!

  • This makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Beautiful!

  • Nobody does this song like the woman who wrote it. Buffy forever!

  • @ivycompton Actually the definitive version is by Matthew Moore. This is good though.

  • @hollies65 'The definitive version' is for the listener to define. Perhaps the first version one hears or a subsequent exposure. My first experience of this was the version by 'The Litter' , which i thoroughly enjoyed. I always thought she wrote it from her experiences withdrawing from the drug as a child. Would that not qualify her version as 'definitive'? Evidently you know otherwise, sir. Good morrow!

  • @theonlyantony Music is objective of course.Yes, I know otherwise. Have you heard Matthew Moore's version? Cheers.

  • @hollies65 Do you mean 'music is objective',or that 'the enjoyment of music and appraisal thereof, is objective'. Either way, i disagree.I think it's VERY subjective rather than objective! Impartiality never comes into my listening. yes, i have now experienced a singer called Matthew Moore,'though thankfully not his version of 'Codeine'.Not my cup of tea.I have my own subjective tolerance levels for cover-version artists, and that transgressed my threshold within a few seconds. each to their own

  • @theonlyantony Heh...Yes to each his own...I did make it though Buffy's tremelo overload version...once. LOL!

  • Much as I love QMS and the Charlatans' covers, THIS is the version that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. She has been a stunningly powerful voice since long before that was "hip" for women or Native Americans.

As others have said, wish I could find an unedited version here. I assume this was recorded @ Newport?

  • @beachdog67 Certainly looks like Newport...

  • great track the charlatans do a great cover too.

  • i want the whole thing....

  • thanks for the post i cant find this anywhere

  • Excellent ! I love the original of this! Saw title, decided to watch and then.... i should have known it was YOU posting this GEM! Thank you John :-)
