WARNING - If you use your real name for GMail, then every comment you've ever posted on YouTube will be traceable back to your name... Google is selling this info to whomever... what happens when potential employers get this info? Insurance companies? Government? I didn't sign up for YouTube with the understanding that everything I say can and will be used against me...

@rg2027x Soon after they acquired YouTube, Google gave users the option to synch the two accounts, so you can use your GMail account to login to your YouTube channel instead of having a separate username/password for your YouTube. So if you unwittingly did this (as I did), then effectively everything you do in YouTube can be tied to your GMail.

@Taurusaud Thanks for explaining, appreciate it. So the sync between Gmail/YT has to be done/initiated by you the user correct? it's not something Google can do on their own or force without your knowing about.

@rg2027x Not exactly - hypothetically they could link the two even if you haven't opted into merging the accounts IF you've been accessing both sites via the same IP address. If they have lists of all the unique IPs that have visited their sites they could use a script to see which IPs have visited both Gmail and YouTube, then link your Gmail to your YouTube. Easy script to write, it might even be something they're doing for the integration. Who knows when they don't tell us anything.

@LIVINGONTHEDOLE There will be a mass exodus for Google, and YT, for that matter...So, Bing, Yahoo, et al., will be very keen to capitalize on this gargantuan mistake that Google is making!

This shall be the end of Google, and, eventually, YouTube as well.

I hate the general tendency to localize and personalize information more and more by big media companies.

Won't be long before every country has a different version of the internet than anyone else, and every individual is fed more of what they believe in and less of what could bring nuance to their opinion.
