The real Leviathan has already existed. The Leviathan has a body like a serpent in Isaiah 27:1 (runaway snake, snake winding). And Behemoth correspond only with brachiosaurus. I have a picture visible, was from a site of my blog, the real baby leviathan to be discovered in the early 2000s. It corresponds to the Chinese dragons at Jormungand at Tiamat, etc ... Very strange when people compare to the film to alien. I mean yea it's like "hide and seek with the monster" like alien did so. But nevertheless the plot Is ok. If it had more explanation why the Russians were working on mutations than that would've been better. But I prefer this one over the abyss because the abyss throws those aliens at the last minute. And to tell you the truth aside from creating a huge tidal wave they aren't that much of a threat.
Along with DeepStar Six - awful sci-fi horror hybrids that just didn't work. The Abyss - same year, 1989 - showed how an underwater alien film should be done.
@hexen666 Did this movie have a scene in it where a woman calls another man "lazy hillbilly dipshit," after she serves him a cooked rat? ldhmnh@gmail.com
You know I can't say this is like the thing a whole lot. For one the monster is always in monster form. Two. the monster doesn't uses the intelligence of it's victims while the thing only uses it's memories of it's victims. Three. The creature actually attempts to use it's victims it absorbed and actually try to beg it's attacker not to kill it. Though that plan failed. I refer to call this monster six-pack because leviathan is the name of the ship in the film not the mutant monster. But w

@peactea1 It's a genetic mutation that absorbs and consumes organic living matter on a genetic level, eventually coalescing into a massive, biped creature with various aquatic creature qualities.
Ive seen this movie before years and years ago, but I also saw The Thing yesterday for the first time. Now, I have no doubts as to how Leviathin was influenced: From the plot, to the cast.
I totally watched this in the theater when it first came out. And many times on VHS. A very entertaining Thing, Alien knock off. Peter Weller is great as always.
1989 was such a great year for movies back to the future 2 Indiana Jones an the last crusade, batman, whats weird is that three movies almost identical in plot and setting were deep star six, leviathan and abyss wow that's just insane to me!
''Men geta ekki standið og sagt Levjatan, hvað hanná að gera, svo hvernig getur maður standið fyrir framan Guð, í fáfræði???'' , ''Men cant stand to Leviathan and tell him what to do, so what makes men stand to God, in ignorance???''-lesið, Job 41.
@Yesterdayss RoBoCop Murphy! lol. i recognize the big forehead. True story about that, he actually was working at a Sea Island restaurant when the casting agent was having lunch and she couldn't stop thinking about the waiters big forehead. She said it would look perfect bald when machinery in the back and he got the job on the spot. o_O .....Ok maybe not so true...
I remember the tv trailer commercials for this movie back sometime in early 1989(I was a sophmore in HS then).Acouple of fellow classmates/friends talked about this movie during opening day,but for me,didn't see it till that year's summer when the movie was finaly on vhs video.
I get this one and "Deepstar Six" confused... One of em has a giant sea mutant terrorizing scientists in an underwater base and the other has Ernie Hudson...
@boydbrotherproductin No , sorry. Unlike Alien , this "creature" in the Abyss was approachable & seemed friendly at first. Alien was an outright danger & deadly to all crew members from the start. You know , all you people need to stop comparing one underwater creature movie to another without doing your homework. There are a lot of contributing factors & common denominators with underwater science fiction/horror movies & others just don't have one to do with the other. Know the differences.
@adds099 in the far future, people often mine underseas to supply the overly crowded surface. the russian ship "Leviathan" is found by a group of deep sea miners who find it derelict and and damaged. after investigating some of its minor cargo and the damage, a few of the crew members (2 of them who stole a flask of vodka) become ill, and both seem to die (one dies from the disease, the other commits suicide). whatever was in the vodka, it starts to mutate them, endangering the entire crew.
@robbrichter2010 I know im just joking mate lol it looked and sounded like Optimus but isnt I know im interested in seeing just cuz of that im thinking its probably not a good movie though
This movie is streaming on Netflix. I just watched it back-to-back with the similar Deepstar Six. Both of them are fun, undersea monster movies. Worth a watch if you're a fan of that stuff.
@zao144 The Abyss is a completely different movie. Different script & not a horror flick feel to it. I just bought the DVD's today of Leviathan & The Abyss on Special Edition DVD from F.Y.E. store , formerly The Wherehouse music store , & know personally that they are 2 different movies with no relevance to each other in script except for the setting of them both being under water. Not even close. Nice try.
@zao144 Not even close to being anything like the Abyss. Much less a rip off. I have both Leviathan & The Abyss on Special Edition DVD in my collection. Just because they were both centered around being an underwater movie , doesn't mean that they are somehow linked in script. Like I said , I have both on DVD & they do not have any commonality other than being an underwater science fiction movie.

If many movies were copies or rip-offs , as you so put it , then many or all motion picture companies would be sued for copyright reasons. Even musicians who cover or rip-off other people's music ask permission & give credit to the original writers & authors of the songs they steal & murder the Hell out of the originality of it.
@theswedishdude1 No , this movie is about an aquatic sea monster. No zombie or zombies in this movie. A zombie is a human based dead cannibal brought back to life that lives off the blood & flesh of living beings. This movie is not about anything that resembles such a story line. Didn't you see Night Of The Living Dead ? That is about zombies. It's like comparing Night Of The Living Dead with Leviathan. Not happenin' .
@Blackhoundrise Try looking for that version at amazon.com. I have found many of the PAL & Region 2 DVD's there & have several of them on my Wish List for later purchase. If it is available in Region 2 or other coded format , you will find it there. Good luck.
