@dragirby it's not a persona game it's a megami tensei game. Persona is a different concept but the same game series as devil survivor as both are part of the megami tensei franchise

@jayjaycorleone Dude, Im a HUGE ass Final Fantasy fan(I have played all known FF's, including XIII. I hate XIII btw.), but I give Persona 4 and Persona 3 a higher rating than FFX and FFX-2 and FFXII, because of the amazing character development and intricate story design. I mean, FFS the shadows they face are their true selves taken form, albeit monstrous. Its amazing compared to FF, though the 2 are completely freaking different as well.

FF was built upon a turn-based system that slowly evolved along the ages-XIII was too much of a change IMO. It seriously made the game have more depth, but it lost all flavor as a FF to me. @jayjaycorleone Dude, I like FF10 but Persona 4 is a way better game. FF10 story is good but not nearly good as Persona 4. Not to mention the voice acting is top notch then FF10. The Tidus and Yuna laugh EWWWW thats abit cheesy. FF12 is ok in some ways... but I do got to say FF10-2 is slightly better then FF10.

7 had no descript jobs, you could turn barret into a [shitty] healer, cloud into a magical attacker, there were no roles. Just like how there were none for 8.
With 9, some comments came locked and thus set a character down in a specific role. Zidane was the thief, vivi the black mage, etc
Arguably, not even 6 did the job classes right, despite giving characters unique commands [due to esper learning].
@otks0800 Persona 4 is way better then Persona 3 the reason why it's because you can play with all of your characters unlike Persona 3. But Persona 3 has a another verison which is FES which is way better then the first version. But Persona 4 doubles the gameplay then FES, it has about 4 or 5 endings.

@Roguejmh888 I respect your opinion, but I dunno about the doubling of the gameplay though. P3, The Journey and The Answer combined took me 135 hours (minus deaths) and P4 only took me about 65 hours. And those were just first playthroughs.
@TechieRefugee What plot holes? The answer is basically "Yes, he's dead deal with it" to the people who didn't quite catch he wasn't "just sleeping" Then you get everyone being giant cunts because they don't understand the nature of why he died and that he's keeping a Bartender from killing them.
Well... first off, it answered how Tartarus can physically exist in the Dark Hour. Second, it further went into the concept of just what shadows were (which P4 actually included in the primary plot). Third, we get to see exactly how characters like Junpei, Aki, Yukari, get the power and join S.E.E.S. And as for the "giant cunts" part, obviously you don't care much for character development (I will give you the "giant cunt" though for Yukari.) These may seem minor, but they're still there.
@TechieRefugee Tartarus is magic, shadows existed in P1 and 2 as well but were less common before the split due to real demons also existing. All the P3 characters besides MC have to force their Personas out with the evokers because Philemon didn't grant them their powers like in P1 and 2 or P4 MC and P4 characters earning their Personas naturally.

Well, not everyone likes the "magic" excuse being thrown around. It's basic physics; the matter for Tartarus had to come from somewhere. As for shadows being in P1 and P2, I know, but they didn't go into as much detail as to what the shadows actually were IIRC. And the MC... kinda did have to use an Evoker. As for the going drastically out of character, like I said, Yukari went way out of line, but it just shows what she and the rest of them would be like, given the opportunity to change fate.
@DogiTheWallcrusher That was him releasing the power of the Wild Card, I'm pretty sure. But to outright say that he didn't need an evoker at all is a falsehood.

It's boring, to many forced scenes, boring characters, dungeons are just dreadful, no real exploration, and no guys, the battles are not hard at all, the list goes on. I believe the problem with your experience playing this game was that you had too high expectations. There may be issues with the game but that doesn't mean it's terrible, that's just your point of view... I played FFXIII with high expectations and I defended the game to death, but in reality I didn't really enjoy playing it. It was very disappointing, but that's my opinion. Not everything has to be "perfect" to be enjoyable.

@XxEndlessSorrowxX One cannot fathom how it's recieved such critical praise....it's a mediocre series and does not deserve the praise it gets on some sites...I spent 40 dollars on Persona 4, and I played it for about 2 hours (after the first half month in game, which is all forced events and just alot of clicking X). There is little gameplay to Persona at all, you follow a single year, having to do an event before a certain date. Other than actual story stuff, there is nothing to do in between.
@NovaScotiaComedy I guess you just have to be into that sort of game. Part of the appeal for me is playing as a mundane, everyday person and having extraordinary things happen to you.
You say you played 2hours... the game takes about 90-160hours to complete... ofcourse such a thing has to build up introductions and such... its not your average I WANT ACTION NAO game.
@Firephoenix105 Firstly, I've seen no RPG or game for that matter that honestly takes 90 hours minimum to complete to main game, maybe if it's got a ton of SQ's and other shit to do than yes. Every game has introduction time, of course, no one said it didn't. @shadowmatt1542 It's a matter of opinion. But I'd say FF wins because it beats Persona in every aspect. Gameplay, Story, Characters, Music (this one is a no brainer), Commercial sales and Ratings and especially, impact on gaming and JRPG's in general. No other RPG series is as long running and as a catalogue of incredible music, storys, characters etc. All unique and in no way related to each other. Persona is a goood series, but to the standard of Final Fantasy as a whole? No way.

Also, why are these games so "great." There is nothing special about them. Boring and bland characters, terribly designed "dungeons." The soundtrack is an uplifting change, it's great. The game itself is fun to play, but it sure as hell isn't any masterpiece. Also, let the flaming begin. On another note, @corezero678, Final Fantasy has still retained a great quality, if XIII isn't great I don't know what is... Characters, Music, Story, Graphics, Gameplay, Battle System...All ace.
@NovaScotiaComedy i think persona has better characters than ff13. i'm a fan of the final fantasy series, but 13 disappointed me a bit. however, i can agree that persona dungeon design has plenty of room for improvement.

@kingofkitties I honestly don't understand the hate that some people hold against XIII, I felt it was incredible. The story was well-paced and interesting. The characters were deep and well developed, although I couldn't stand Snow, he was too overbearing. Persona 4 started off like FFXIII did, to slow. There was too much forced events in Persona 4, but after you gained the ability to freely explore town it was much more fun and interesting. I wish you could revisit all Cocoon locales in FFXIII.

Final Fantasy 13 was okay. I enjoyed it. Personally, I liked Persona 3 a bit better. I had a REALLY hard time getting emotionally involved in any of XIII's characters. You payed a lost of attention or not. I actually ended up beating the endgame boss for a friend, before playing the game myself. How did I do this, you ask? Construct a party using the funny black dude, and the two lesbians, set to Auto-Battle, then Paradigm Shift every ten seconds. This is before playing the game, myself. Yeah, it doesn't take a lot to play Persona either, but you have Elemental resistances, Attack Type weaknesses, so on to keep in mind. It's a bit more in-depth
Anyways, FFXIII was a beautiful game with a neat story. It really was. When I first saw the trailer, I couldn't believe it. It was too pretty/awesome. But like I said, I had a hard time getting emotionally invested in any of the characters.
Oh, and not being able to grind messed me up the whole damn game.
@GreyStoryTime Elemental resistances? Attack weaknesses? These things are present in FFXIII, as well as every RPG in existance...FFXIII was more involved in battle than Persona was, it wa just simply another turn based battle system. I still don't see you can beat everything simply by using auto-battle (which I know no one who uses) to beat everything, I'd like to see it done against Vercingetorix, Adamantoises. Persona boss can be simplified too, simply find the weakness and exploit it to win.
@GreyStoryTime If FFXIII had bland characters, I don't what to call Persona 4's...they were just plain dull, to put it nicely. SMT series is critically acclaimed for having characters, story, etc. You do realize we are talking about Final Fantasy right, if it isn't critically and commercially succesful, I don't know what is. I mean, Persona 4's characters were unexplained, I mean with the exception of Teddy, everyone was flat and lifeless. Well, the crazy teacher was pretty funny at times.
FF13's characters were a bit more 'quirky' is the only word I can think for it. They were supposed to stand out. However, the allure of Persona 4's were that they were far more realistic in a sense. They had actual everyday concerns behind them all, stuff most people deal with.
I'll admit you have to go into the social links to see that but the draw was that they were people you could see as a normal pal in real life.
@NovaScotiaComedy Plain dull? They tugged at me more than what FFXIII's did. P4's characters have their quirks and whatnot, whereas FFXIII was more like it was suited for a point and click game. The linearity didn't help. The supposed deep feelings you have to feel for the characters felt awkwardly put ingame because of the said linearity. I didn't care what happened to them mostly except beat Missions and beat the Final Boss. Serah's involvement in the plot felt pretty lame.
TL;DR, FFXIII was a good game, with great graphics, but the characters were pretty static and combat felt really uninvolved. The SMT series is critically acclaimed for having great characterization, amazing stories, and a really fun demon aspect. It's not present in Persona 3 or 4, but the ability to talk demons into working for you? Awesome.
After reading all the comments I have to say, how in the hell is Persona 4 at all difficult, the battle system is easy to grasp (when is a battle system not?) and no battle (on expert) has given me any difficulty...Also, other than Teddie, the characters in Persona 4 are absolutely horrible...

FF was built upon a turn-based system that slowly evolved along the ages-XIII was too much of a change IMO. It seriously made the game have more depth, but it lost all flavor as a FF to me. But thats me, not every single gamer out there.

@jayjaycorleone Dude, I like FF10 but Persona 4 is a way better game. FF10 story is good but not nearly good as Persona 4. Not to mention the voice acting is top notch then FF10. The Tidus and Yuna laugh EWWWW thats abit cheesy. FF12 is ok in some ways... but I do got to say FF10-2 is slightly better then FF10.

7 had no descript jobs, you could turn barret into a [shitty] healer, cloud into a magical attacker, there were no roles. Just like how there were none for 8.
With 9, some comments came locked and thus set a character down in a specific role. Zidane was the thief, vivi the black mage, etc
Arguably, not even 6 did the job classes right, despite giving characters unique commands [due to esper learning].

@otks0800 Persona 4 is way better then Persona 3 the reason why it's because you can play with all of your characters unlike Persona 3. But Persona 3 has a another verison which is FES which is way better then the first version. But Persona 4 doubles the gameplay then FES, it has about 4 or 5 endings.

@Roguejmh888 I respect your opinion, but I dunno about the doubling of the gameplay though. P3, The Journey and The Answer combined took me 135 hours (minus deaths) and P4 only took me about 65 hours. And those were just first playthroughs.

Well... first off, it answered how Tartarus can physically exist in the Dark Hour. Second, it further went into the concept of just what shadows were (which P4 actually included in the primary plot). Third, we get to see exactly how characters like Junpei, Aki, Yukari, get the power and join S.E.E.S. And as for the "giant cunts" part, obviously you don't care much for character development (I will give you the "giant cunt" though for Yukari.) These may seem minor, but they're still there.

@TechieRefugee Tartarus is magic, shadows existed in P1 and 2 as well but were less common before the split due to real demons also existing. All the P3 characters besides MC have to force their Personas out with the evokers because Philemon didn't grant them their powers like in P1 and 2 or P4 MC and P4 characters earning their Personas naturally.
I don't consider characters having a drastic out of character change and then going back into character being character development. I call it dumb

Well, not everyone likes the "magic" excuse being thrown around. It's basic physics; the matter for Tartarus had to come from somewhere. As for shadows being in P1 and P2, I know, but they didn't go into as much detail as to what the shadows actually were IIRC. And the MC... kinda did have to use an Evoker. As for the going drastically out of character, like I said, Yukari went way out of line, but it just shows what she and the rest of them would be like, given the opportunity to change fate.

It's boring, to many forced scenes, boring characters, dungeons are just dreadful, no real exploration, and no guys, the battles are not hard at all, the list goes on. I was expecting alot more from something that is so highly rated, but playing it left me wondering why... This is Final Fantasy X-2, but worse....

I believe the problem with your experience playing this game was that you had too high expectations. There may be issues with the game but that doesn't mean it's terrible, that's just your point of view... I played FFXIII with high expectations and I defended the game to death, but in reality I didn't really enjoy playing it. It was very disappointing, but that's my opinion. Not everything has to be "perfect" to be enjoyable.

@XxEndlessSorrowxX One cannot fathom how it's recieved such critical praise....it's a mediocre series and does not deserve the praise it gets on some sites...I spent 40 dollars on Persona 4, and I played it for about 2 hours (after the first half month in game, which is all forced events and just alot of clicking X). There is little gameplay to Persona at all, you follow a single year, having to do an event before a certain date. Other than actual story stuff, there is nothing to do in between.

@Firephoenix105 Firstly, I've seen no RPG or game for that matter that honestly takes 90 hours minimum to complete to main game, maybe if it's got a ton of SQ's and other shit to do than yes. Every game has introduction time, of course, no one said it didn't. But the fact that it forces you through about 1 hour or so of forced scenes and the only actual gametime is the few steps you take in your home is retarded.

@shadowmatt1542 It's a matter of opinion. But I'd say FF wins because it beats Persona in every aspect. Gameplay, Story, Characters, Music (this one is a no brainer), Commercial sales and Ratings and especially, impact on gaming and JRPG's in general. No other RPG series is as long running and as a catalogue of incredible music, storys, characters etc. All unique and in no way related to each other. Persona is a goood series, but to the standard of Final Fantasy as a whole? No way.

Also, why are these games so "great." There is nothing special about them. Boring and bland characters, terribly designed "dungeons." The soundtrack is an uplifting change, it's great. The game itself is fun to play, but it sure as hell isn't any masterpiece. Also, let the flaming begin. On another note, @corezero678, Final Fantasy has still retained a great quality, if XIII isn't great I don't know what is... Characters, Music, Story, Graphics, Gameplay, Battle System...All ace.

@NovaScotiaComedy i think persona has better characters than ff13. i'm a fan of the final fantasy series, but 13 disappointed me a bit. however, i can agree that persona dungeon design has plenty of room for improvement.
that said, both persona and ff are great series, why their fans have to hate on each other is beyond my comprehension. feel free to have your own opinions, just don't turn criticisms into childish insults, though i will say you guys are way better than some threads i've seen

@kingofkitties I honestly don't understand the hate that some people hold against XIII, I felt it was incredible. The story was well-paced and interesting. The characters were deep and well developed, although I couldn't stand Snow, he was too overbearing. Persona 4 started off like FFXIII did, to slow. There was too much forced events in Persona 4, but after you gained the ability to freely explore town it was much more fun and interesting. I wish you could revisit all Cocoon locales in FFXIII.

You payed a lost of attention or not. I actually ended up beating the endgame boss for a friend, before playing the game myself. How did I do this, you ask? Construct a party using the funny black dude, and the two lesbians, set to Auto-Battle, then Paradigm Shift every ten seconds. This is before playing the game, myself. Yeah, it doesn't take a lot to play Persona either, but you have Elemental resistances, Attack Type weaknesses, so on to keep in mind. It's a bit more in-depth

These things are present in FFXIII, as well as every RPG in existance...FFXIII was more involved in battle than Persona was, it wa just simply another turn based battle system. I still don't see you can beat everything simply by using auto-battle (which I know no one who uses) to beat everything, I'd like to see it done against Vercingetorix, Adamantoises. Persona boss can be simplified too, simply find the weakness and exploit it to win.

SMT series is critically acclaimed for having characters, story, etc. You do realize we are talking about Final Fantasy right, if it isn't critically and commercially succesful, I don't know what is. I mean, Persona 4's characters were unexplained, I mean with the exception of Teddy, everyone was flat and lifeless. Well, the crazy teacher was pretty funny at times.

FF13's characters were a bit more 'quirky' is the only word I can think for it. They were supposed to stand out. However, the allure of Persona 4's were that they were far more realistic in a sense. They had actual everyday concerns behind them all, stuff most people deal with.
I'll admit you have to go into the social links to see that but the draw was that they were people you could see as a normal pal in real life.

The linearity didn't help. The supposed deep feelings you have to feel for the characters felt awkwardly put ingame because of the said linearity. I didn't care what happened to them mostly except beat Missions and beat the Final Boss. Serah's involvement in the plot felt pretty lame.

The SMT series is critically acclaimed for having great characterization, amazing stories, and a really fun demon aspect.
