Instead of cutting this scene because J Carpenter felt it wasn't necessary & needed 2 cut length of movie...I'd rather he would have corrected the editing mistake that occurs when Snake is brought in2 the prison & meets Warden Lee Van Cleef. Bet most of u never noticed it. Watch closely, it's out of sync.
I wouldn't have minded it being in the film. It kinda showed snakes loyalty to friends. Yeah, he's a badass, but shows (like he says in the movie) a little human compassion :) Top 5 favorite movie of all time
@beanmchne I don't think it was loyalty, he needed Taylor to stop that train, when it went by, he knew he was caught so he said FUCK IT and went back up to check on him. Snake is all about self- preservation. He is the epitomy of survival!
Actually, I liked this deleted scene a lot and think it should have been put back in the movie for the latest DVD release. I love the character of Snake Plissken and think the movie was perfect as it was. However, I love John Carpenter and think this deleted scene showcases some of his better aspects as a director, which was kinda' lost in his later films. Still, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK is my favorite movie not matter what! Don't mess with Snake!
fucking great scene .....the ultimate bad ass..he even raises his hands in surrender -like a bad ass lol ....they should have left this in, i dont even mind the little AR2-D2 robot either lol
The scene is fine. Whether it should have been in the original version, I figure, will always be up for debate. Yet, if Carpenter had used it Tarantino-style ala Pulp Fiction, as either a flashback or film short within a film, I believe, it would have added mounds of splendor to an already classic film.
@fadethetrade In this scene alone? Maybe. But keep in mind, you're watching this without seeing the rest of the movie. In context with the rest of the movie, you might not think so.
@DORKYBA55ATTACK I would have lost a little admiration for him if this was in the beginning because I'll see the guy with that schmuck and how they got caught with absolutely no resistance, then seeing pliskin kill ox baker in the ring and actually make it out with the president with a few seconds left, that first scene would have tarnished the movie a bit. This robbery scene simply wasn't consistant with pliskins delta force character. They made the right choice.
JJ Abrams and his dad (a TV producer) viewed a rough cut with John Carpenter before release. JJ's dad suggested that they cut the bank robbery. JJ (a kid at the time) commented that they hadn't shown what happened to Adrianne Barbeau's character after being hit by the car. Carpenter took both of these observations to heart, cutting the bank scene and filming a new scene of Adrianne's character's corpse. Just heard this today in an NPR interview with JJ.
The guy playing Taylor is actually Joe Unger. Who is best known for his role as Sgt. Garcia in Nightmare on Elm Street. He's now 71 years old and has quite a long list of movies to his credit.
In many ways, I feel really cheated after watching this clip. I saw this movie when it first came out, and even though I have always loved the movie, I always thought there was more to it. In this particular case, I was right. However, I feel cheated in that I also bought the DVD when it came out, and this was omitted from that version as well. It burns me that I have to find it on the Internet in order to complete the story, plus wasting $10 on a DVD that was incomplete!
They shouldv''e shown this before the main title sequence. It shows that Snake is a bad guy (bank robber) but that he has loyalty to his friend. He couldv'e gotten away but he stopped too long and went back Taylor. When they divvy up the 'creds' he tells Taylor he trusts him, too. then gives him that look. Who( in their right mind) would gyp Snake? Except for Brain. The only reason Snake didn't waste him, was because he was useful on getting out of N.Y.
this intro is better.... spectially that it's not as obvious as the real one in the begining... for example: The united states police force, like an army, is encamped around the island. what Island? what united states police force... it gives a lot more suspens... I like this intro... specially the bank intrusion thing.... so dark!
The novelization of Escape from New York goes more into detail as to why snake is bitter. Mainly it was because of feeling betrayed and used by the military by sending him on a mission that was basically a waste of life and him losing his eye. Then it was his parents getting murdered by the USPF and their savings taken away by the government.
I love this intro, gives the film a bit more humanity and shows the theme of the fascist state which the original edit never quite managed. If this had been in the original edit, it would have helped explain a lot about how desperate times were outisde the walls of New York!
I agree, this scene reveals too much about Snake prematurely, and John Carpenter was right to leave it out of the movie. It's better to watch the movie proper first, and then watch this scene afterward (or better yet, read the novelization, which delves even deeper).
(By the way, if you think the police's offing of Taylor was cold-blooded, wait 'till you read the novelization and find out what else they've done-sorry, no spoilers)
@LadyStarfire2007 - I have to respectfully disagree with your take. I want to know this about Snake. Its short and its a bank robbery (very cool). We find out why Snake has such a bad attitude. In the movie there is too much speculation about who, Snake is. Snake is the main character.& we need to know this about him. I do not believe this makes him wishy washy . Two buddies robbed a bank and got caught..... that's it .& you know why he goes to prison. gives the movie more depth ......IMHO
Funny how filmmakers view of the future is never close to what actually happens. When I was a child in the '60's, we were all gonna be flying around in Jetson cars by now. lol
@don417 If Jules Verne had lived in the era of motion pictures and become a filmmaker, would he have been any closer at adapting his stories for the screen with the technology that existed at the time? Or for that matter, would H.G. Wells have been any closer to the mark had he been behind the camera? It's true, the Fritz Langs, the Stanley Kubricks and the John Carpenters of the world have all partially failed at predicting our present in their films, but that's to be expected. It's the future
They chose not to use the scene because they believed it humanized snake, the fact that he risks imprisonment to go back for his friend reveals to the audiance from the get-go that snake is not just a cold hearted bastard, taking away some of the mystique of his character.
@shorttimer09 Actually he does show Humanity at the end of the film. He tells the president to fuck off when he tears up the audio of the real tape because Maggie, Cabbi and Brain all die and the President couldnt give a shit about them. Snake has humanity in him but this scene would have showed it too early in the game.
What really reveals Snake's character is the part wherein he tells Taylor, "You look at it. I trust ya."
For Snake, the haul was of secondary importance, if at all. What was in it for him was to stick it to the System.
His country turned into a police state... himself permanently maimed while fighting for something he believed in but that no longer existed as he knew it...
@angst73 If you read the novel it also explains that he was betrayed by the government as they sent him on a mission - the one where he lost his eye due to nerve gas - that wasn't necessary.
You know this scene actually make the rest of the movie make a lot more sense. like Snake's attitude through the film and some of the dialouge, like the "I'm to tired" towards the end.
This would of been an awesome begininng. But it may of changed the series and events of Escape from L.A. But still I think it should of been used. Its awesome!

Joe Unger is credited at playing Taylor in the movie. I'm wondering if it's the same Taylor that Snake was working with in this scene.
