i love how he says the part of the missouri is a secret. he could go back to the same spot the same dept same water temp same bait and never catch a fish over 40lbs again.

And taking a fish out of the river that size is a shame. there arent that many monsters left we need to perseve the ones we do have. not to mention its gonna taste terrible.

He should have let that fish go. He is going to be quite disappointed in the taste of that meat. Large blue cats scavenge most of their lives, and in a dirty ass river like the missouri. that cat probably has a little bit of every pesticide, herbacide, parasite, fecal matter, and chemical that has been used/dropped in that huge ass river for the past 50 years. not to mention that its old muscles are going to be tough.

@666turbobusa The largest catfish breed is the whels Cat, and they are native to northern eurup. they were brought to a river system in spain in the 1980's i belive that dew to an all year long high temp and no natural predoters + a catch and release mandate on the fish, has acounted for some of the bigest cat fish ever. the wels can grow to be 16.5 ft in length and weigh over 660 lb. the largest one recorded as of 2009. but even the avrage wels cuaghtonly weigh around 200lb

@Illiamdra wels do not reach 660 pounds. over 200 yes, but they definetly do not reach 600. the world record was 246 pounds, but this record may have been broken out of italys river po in 2010 with a fish of 250 pounds 5 OZ. furthermore the largest breed of catfish is the mekong catfish, this fish can reach over 600 pounds.

It is very obvious that you watched the wels episode of river monsters, but your actual knowledge of fish is still quite questionable.

For crying out loud y'all, let the guy have his 15 minutes of fame. People trophy hunt all the time - big game in Africa, hunting elk and deer and other ruminants for their antlers and the like - lighten up. So it's one less catfish. By the time it was that size it was an old geezer anyhow and wouldn't last much longer. Not everyone automatically thinks of putting the fish back. He was probably so excited at the size of the fish it never entered his mind.

I've fished most of my life. It was strictly catch and release for me if I did not eat it.

I would have been torn between trying to keep that beautiful ol' creature alive and showing him off.

I see the big ones as my more than worthy opponents, and with that comes respect.

We've always got a camera with us. I guarantee you I would have at least had shots from every conceivable angle.

I think banning commerical fishing in the missouri has allowed some of these blues to grow to full grown so to speak....Now, I just wished since most of the meat on this blue wasn't any good they would have allowed this monster to go back. Yeah I'm not sure why they didn't do everything they could have to keep it alive. Bass Pro in Sprinfield, Mo (the official HQ) pays guys crazy money to buy record fish and especially world record fish to put it in their aquariums down there for people to look at and enjoy. Could have gotten a replica mount done and made some serious cash from BassPro or Cabela's or just released it. He didn't look too intelligent so it's not surprising he let it die and is only left with a record and dead fish.

@gohuge How do you know he 'let it die'? Fish this size are notorious for dying after being landed. What do you do after catching it, throw it in the live well, give it mouth to gill resuscitation? @alderaforall You've been around alot of world record fish have you? Also they had the fish in a tub they could have easily put an aerator on. Didn't see any attempt at that. I'm a tournament bass fishermen so I understand a fish dying happens. Always try to avoid it with my catch-and-release policy, but know it happens. My point was it looks like no attempt was made to keep the fish alive and I will double down on my previous statement about the guys intelligence. Sorry it's a judgement call!!!

@alderaforall I understand your point and it's valid. What we do know is that the fish was caught around midnight and the video was in the day light so obviously at least 8 hours had passed. I said what I said because if you look at them handling the fish it shows zero signs of rigor mortis. Catfish are notorious for a fast onset of RM. The fish had just recently died meaning there is a chance it could have been kept alive and you see no signs at all that they even tried, but hey it's his fish.

Cat Fish are a breed that still have a lung of sorts and can live out of water with slow gulps of air for days, as long as their skin is kept moist. I fish for cat every summer for food because its oen of the best tasting fish. and our cats can manage to still be alive and kicking after a 6 hour drive home in the back of the truck only wraped in a damp rag
