  • Comment removed

  • The speaker did not take in to account the music that was playing. The lyrics were "I got to be unstoppable!"

    qq

  • Fuck your oil and all you stand for........... oh and the leader follower thing at the start: he only out linesd what sheepeople are... didnt look much like a movement to me, I think you need to dig alot deeper into social developments before you make another vid...

  • FUCK IBM!!!!

  • WHY are there large audiences at these stupid TED yap-fests, I mean talks?

The speakers have nothing but general pablum to say

(and I'm not just singling out Derek Sivers, but other speakers, as well),

even when the topic is serious and deep.

  • @mphello

I think ted talks shows a pretty good deal of ideas and philosophies that is very intriguing, and so do the "large audience".

Speaking "generally" does not mean you have "nothing" to say it means you can use it generally (look up philosophy).

Also calling something "stupid" without any grounds is pretty stupid, so that make you a hypocrite at the same time.

Note: if you believe you know what intelligent is than show me a link and i will decide for myself if its intelligent or not.

  • Prunes.

  • Now tell us the critical mass number when the followers forget (or actively ignore) the original positive philosophies and goals of the leader and turn the movement into a cult, and then a dangerous religion, army or nation.

  • WOOOT DRUNK TANK

  • (drunk tank)

  • i like the fact that his message basically summarised to "treat your followers as equals"...

  • Love this one .....A leader starts out with a vision....they have the courage to follow the vision alone at the beginning, until someone joins in and follows....then they embrace those they are training as equals and teach them to duplicate their strategy so others can join in too, bringing their own uniqueness to expand the vision.... This is a great example of using our influence, standing alone with a vision, and how we can use the concept to bring positive change to the world...

  • co za asy is a good example

  • What's drunk tank?

  • @akeo2

  • He loves his "crazy man" dance lol

  • Besides the blatant push for Big Oil ( but not so big cause they're only like you know the 9th largest) exploitation, there is actually a valid point there.

like it or not we are highly dependent on fossil fuels and the 2 huge emerging economies-India and China is set to increase their dependency for fossil fuels exponentially. So yeah, Big Oil is "raping" gaia but at this moment in time, unless there is a huge change in our operating paradigm, we need em so that we can push for clean energy.

  • Oil company commercials ?

Anyone remember that little spill in the gulf which is apparently still leaking?

Tell us how you're going to secure your rigs and be prepared for your next spill brother, instead of how profitable you're venture is becoming !

  • OIL company ads really? So TED how about showing some Leadership and Innovation and not supporting energy companies that rape the planet for obscene profits at the expense of it's inhabitants! TED sponsored by Big Oil!

  • Amazing video, but what a bummer ad at the end though...yeah we need oil like we need a hole in the head.

  • @UWrosesdawg

What is your computer made out of? I'll bet a barrel of oil its got some petroleum products in it.

  • @jasonsheil

We keep using oil and fossil fuels at the rate we are, and there wont be any real reason to use a computer for many...because civilization has collapsed. We'll find an alternative to petroleum based plastics.

  • Brilliant.

  • He is stating whats going on in a marriage : man = "leader". woman = "follower"

It's the woman that holds a home together, not the man. She just lets the man think that he is in charge, when in fact its her who decides how it's done.

Men want to lead but in fact have no power. Only women can control and change the course of things because they have a psychological mind, as opposed to a practical mind.

  • @florencelovme It seems you haven't been around many real men. Women are not psychological, they're weak and emotional, and easily manipulable.

  • This leads right in to 1,000 True Fans by Kevin Kelley, eh?

  • This guy is clearly telling you to follow. He's not talking about aligning with a common interest and becoming passionate about things you believe in. He's telling you to latch onto something that somebody else is already doing and that you'll be special for it.

0:34 "What (the leader) is doing is easy to follow"

    2:20 "Leadership is over-glorified."

i'll make sure to fall in line and go back to sleep now Derek. Good talk.

  • fuck no we dont really need oil. its beyond common knowledge its all being held back

  • Interesting. But I have been trying to think of one big movement that was given momentum and sustenance by a 'follower'. It is true that great leaders like Gandhi who started movements would have nurtured their immediate followers (a rather obvious point for leadership) but I am drawing a blank when I think of a Number 2 or 3 or 4 who was instrumental in a movement gathering momentum. Thoughts anyone?

  • @neerajbali7 my first guess would be the civil rights movement. Dr. King was there but when Rosa Parks did what she did and fell in line with him, it created a snowball effect. But thats only my opinion

  • @ 2:55 Yea! IM GAY!!!!!!

  • derek severs is always surprising. awesome lesson.

  • I'm a lone nut... who's gonna follow me? Seriously. Will it be you?

  • (after watching the presentation) ... is the dude gay?

  • This just lit me up <3

  • instead of thinking renewable energy resourses they still promoting oil shit.

    and why? because of money!

  • Ironically, as I was watching I was applying what Derek is saying to the Peak Oil Movement. Irony, heh.

  • From the commercial spot: "we need to find the oil that we can to supply the earth's needs"

The EARTH doesn't need oil. The earth has the oil. The WORLD needs oil.

  • oil drilling platform? you got to be kidding me! these guys are serial killers LIFE SENTENCES FOR ALL OF THEM!

  • lol, nice ad at the end!

  • This guy is really insightful!

  • ewwww why is there an oil drilling commercial on this TED video? Sad and even traumatizing to see it here! Why is it not about alternative energy instead? That is what I would expect to find on Ted especially as the Gulf fills up with their dark poisons and the air fouled with fumes and the animals gasp their last breathe and all sea life dies. Shame on you.

  • @nikkicraft the point is that alternative energy simply isn't ready to meet the world's energy needs. Yes, petroleum is bad, but it is also very cheap compared to alternative energy. That is why we still use oil. We badly need a blended, holistic approach that keeps everything on the table. Oil isn't just about moving your car around, it's about energy for the entire world. We NEED oil for right now, the other will come along when they are ready.

  • the ad in the second half is petroleum propaganda, but it turns out to be an IBM ad. WTH?

  • Cool, but, he's just responding to exactly what happened in the video and nothing else. Does he have any other examples of this pattern?

  • @Digeridude I got the first follower for my pulser pump (Matt in Cornwall) last year and now over 2 decades after I made the idea public! scientists are researching it!

So even the supposedly open minded scientific community are human animals and generally do not have the guts to join in. Brian

  • every genius needs an enabler

  • very inpired!

  • So Cool!

  • this clip reminds me of a movement i started this morning. it was HUGE, multi-colored and powerful.

  • The speaker incorrectly lumped two distinct types of "leadership" into one: mindless fads and thought leadership. To start a mindless fad requires the leader to be mindless. In contrast, to start a thought leadership requires the leader to have a vision.

  • Short and sweet

  • What a wise fellow!

  • "The first follower is an underestimated form of leadership." What a powerful lesson! Teachers, coaches and leaders do we nurture our "first followers" sufficiently. Do we reinforce and value our team leaders enough...great nsights!

  • propaganda crap...somebody should of beaten those two dancing homos with ball bats

  • I always Thought; Men aren't that different than apes; Haha

  • amazing. add ruinds it :(

  • @luke55ish You don't have to watch it and they fund the organization, so suck it up.

  • butt plugs??

  • Great vid! Thanks to Lotanerve for the share!

  • fyi; the Youtube comments section is not the place for a rational intelligent discussion. Invariably it becomes an electronic food fight...which has all the irrationality and chaos, without delicious mud-pie running down your face.

  • That was just plain funny!

  • cant believe that add at the end! to supply the earth's needs? are they kidding? what about putting as much money and effort into the science of using less? shocking arrogance.

  • I don't mind being a Lone Nut. :)

  • The ad was as real as it gets. I don't see why people are angry. If people didn't keep drilling for oil while we work on creating more sustainable infrastructure, we wouldn't have plastics or fuel or power in most places. Without fuel, food could no longer be imported or exported - many places would starve, since they rely on that infrastructure for food. Do you think Anchorage would thrive if you morons got the world's reins?

  • @PSK11489 Maybe because some "morons" know that other "morons" don't know that oil comp. withold the 99% of the alternative energy patents, and have no interest to change a thing. Come on.......................

  • @mochiam oil companies have a very strong economic interest to change, at this point: the world is shifting to sustainable energy, and if the proper investments aren't made, then they /will/ go bankrupt. it's not like they can hold back progress anymore -- whether or not alternative energy is going to happen is not the question. it is the new reality. the question is whether or not the oil companies are flexible enough to join the party.

  • @leam1978 please don't insult yourself, you should really rethink your previous statements...........................

  • The 7 minute long recording ( watch?v=nU7dxkIz1Vs ) shows green t-shirt is at least the 5th "first-follower"

What changed to make the movement?

    1. The leader stopped putting people off by hitting dancers on the ass

    2. There was a group of 3 strangers dancing simultaneously, making a crowd

White t-shirt is dancing with shirtless for quite a while after he's stopped fondling, but no 3rd member joins to make it a group. Making a group of 3 seems more important than 2, which can still be 2 crazies

  • Amazing!

  • that was f***ing awesome

  • Hey TED.... Oil...?

    I'm going off these videos

  • I hope to see Repsol's marketing manager among other oil executives to be in front of an international court judging them for crimes against humanity

  • pathetic attempt by evil oil giant repsol to convince ted's liberal audince in the masks of a softver company - that made one of its first big business selling computing solutions to the nazis to control the nightmare of holocaust - about the complete nonsense of the necessity of continuing oil drilling. stop oil now! invest in solar/wind energy! stop using energy that kills our planet! - this is how to start a movement:)

  • @Arimaspoi no. saying something is evil is not the same as starting a movement. stopping (or at least reducing) your personal dependence on petrol and oil-based products will start a movement. doing something will start a movement.

  • @leam1978 @leam1978 exactly! let us convert to minimal impact voluntary simplicity! let us invest in renewable energy and recycling! I consider you my first follower: you are the real hero of the movement:)

  • MDMA...

  • awesome made me smile =)!

  • almost a pointless lecture ended with an ass backwards ad. tisk tisk

  • Would be great if it was something more worthwhile than gyrating in the park

  • @cqr80

When you first learned fractions, did you start with complex rational polynomials, or with how much of a pizza is left if billy and pat bot take one slice each? Introductory material is always a simplest example.

  • The ad' sux = spoils th e whole Ted image and reputation

  • @MrBrindleStyle Haha yeah definitely. I hear what your saying. Even TED needs money I guess

  • @MrBrindleStyle

Why? I just stopped it when I saw the ad..

  • @MrBrindleStyle Pay attention to which talks the director will hurry at the end to comment on, and what he will say, and you'll understand...sometimes it feels like these ads. TED doesnt share the view of every speaker that's impossible, the only thing these people have in common is success, and success in this society comes only with money. TED is too ingrained with this society to NOT put ads.

  • fucking lemmings

  • @anonynomnomnom

    .. yea.. lemmings on drugs.

  • @anonynomnomnom

Well I have warm memories of exactly that type of alcohol induced random dancing at rock festivals turning into a spontaneous public demonstration.

  • Interesting thoughts! I've seen this movie before, but didn't think of this idea :)
