In 1981, the U.S. Air Force developed requirement for an Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) to replace the aging F-15 Eagle & F-16 Falcon, as the new air superiority fighters. On October 31, 1986 two prototypes YF-22 & YF-23 undertook a **50-month** demonstration phase. These designs are 30+ years old.
The maintainability of this aircraft is pretty bad respect to how much work has to be done to replace a panel unlike a legacy fighter. I wonder how the Naval variant of the JSF will fair at sea considering how badly aircraft can corrode on deck.
@Eagle1oh7 I am sure this was taken into consideration. The f22 was alot easier to maintain than the f117 and b2, the f35's stealth mats are designed to be even more so.
@ArsArma Yeah, it's already becoming a maintenance nightmare for future maintainers on a carrier. To swap engines out, it has to be put on jacks and getting permission for that can be a pain depending on the ship. Engine replacements are also an issue because it's too large for COD delivery and send-offs. Lessons learned, but new things keep popping up for C variant.
@ArsArma I guess they decided one engine would help keep costs down and most multi-engine aircraft have catastrophic failures even if one malfunctions. Apparently there are more problems with the F-35A, haven't read the article yet on Combat Aircraft Monthly.
Who cares!!!! We blow more money on stupid shit all the time, like health care bills!!!! At least this thing will kick major ass in the inevitable wars we are going to be fighting.
@JordiHays .. Whats needed in Afghanistan is state of the art farming equipment to help grow the Poppies faster; production is only up by 300%, after US forces started assisting with the cultivation. FREEDUMB

@Eagle1oh7 wow, looks like 2 smaller engines would have been a better idea >.> which branches idea was it for one engine again?

I know. Its a great plane, but what we need in Afghanistan is ground attack planes like the F35.
JordiHays 2 years ago
Well, the F-35 program has doubled in cost since it was first proposed, so we may not be seeing any F-35's for a while.
