  • personally i've never been a big fan of martial arts specifically used for self defense. It's one thing to learn all of these self defense moves (not only in jiu jitsu but other ma's like karate, tae kwon do, etc.) in theory, but its another thing when someone actually has a knife or a gun to you. Its hard to train self defense without someone actually trying to hurt you. But congrats to the guy who got his black belt.

  • there a laughin like damn he did that shit to me too.

  • So at this dojo the stand up self defense techniques are done at the end (well not end but later on :P) Any reason why?

  • Great video. Excellent Jiu Jitsu. I'm getting so tired of seeing all these sport Jiu Jitsu videos. Good to see real application of self defense finally presented and not MMA or sport.

  • Se esse cara não tivesse os dois braços ele nunca seria pego num armlock!!!

  • theres no way. is this guy even trying when rolling? If so Sauer is ridiculously good. ( sorry finally watched it all )

  • Ridiculous, such precise teqnique.. I wonder how long it took him to earn his blackbelt in Jiu.

  • I would think a brown belt working for his black belt wouldn't be so dominated in that live roll...

  • @zakquack ya but he's rolling with a master so obviously he's gonna get dominated

  • @zakquack you obviously do not know how amazing Professor Sauer is, I train at his academy and I've seen him roll against champion grapplers who literally cannot do anything to stop him. The man is legendary in jiu-jitsu

  • @k1ng92 au contraire... I know of Pedro Sauer and have long admired him... I hope to some day have the honor to train under him... I would have just expected someone at a brown belt level would be able to offer at least some offense and at least some resistance to anyone on the planet... I really have mispoken because I have come to the suggestion that this new brown belt is sub-standard... I obviously do not know what it's like to roll with Sauer!

  • @zakquack touché I seemed to have misunderstood your statement, nonetheless he is in fact an amazing teacher and always loves to have students from other gyms come and train, you should stop by if in the area

  • @k1ng92 No I think you nailed me on my statement lol... I don't have any plans to be in the area but if I do find myself there, I will absolutely visit for a session!

  • @baldycheese except that last 20 minutes of rolling? "Japanese" Jiu Jitsu is like saying Chinese food, is about the biggest umbrella term for martial arts there is. Helio Gracie had his pick of techniques and the belt he is testing for is Helio Gracie Jiu Jitsu, his favorite Jiu Jitsu techniques and live sparring.

  • i saw nothing here that isnt found in traditional japanese jujitsu

  • @tiradopunisher92 also, the brown belt looks like he is in his late 20's, Sauer is in his what, 60's? He could probably beat him if his goal was to win, but slow, non attribute, technique rolling is a much better way to showcase technique and knowledge rather than athleticism, Sauer has been doing BJJ since before that guy was born, OF COURSE he is going to dominate a high ranking brown in terms of kinesthesia

  • Now do those defense drills at full speed.

  • @beckybetts2012 to get your silk belt

  • I think this guy was just respectful to his teacher. There are other intense bjj tests on youtube.

  • @tiradopubisher92 what's the basis for that? Are all murderous criminals enrolled in Escrima these days? The point of those techniques it to remind the student that at its heart, BJJ is a self defense system. And no, people don't do movie-stuff with a knife if they are serious about stabbing you, there is no precedent to think that way either.

  • Jujitsu is one of the best styles out there please don't make it a mockery by showing stuff that worked in the 70s,and not in 2012 .

  • As a brown belt you should give your teacher a hard time .I really see no techinques ,or any guard defence on the students part he is just waiting ,I am a Gracie Barra purple belt and my treacher kicks my butt all the time ,but I don't make it easy on him ....More ground work and a little bit less in defence that isn't going to help you in the streets ...A knife attack isn't going to be a step forward ,the assailant with the knife is going to go crazy moving the weapon in all directions.

  • @tiradopunisher92

dude if someone is going crazy with a knife they are obviously not serious about killing you.....yes u may get stabbed but the spots where they r attacking in this video are vital spots(neck, midsection where the organs are) getting stabbed in the arm or leg wont kill you. they are using proper technique to protect vital areas. and countering with judo throws then finish them off with an armlock

  • good job and congrats on the black belt! also very cool to watch professor sauer roll--everything is so smooth and technical.

  • I can't find an affordable class around here T_T

  • Most of these techniques are not applicable in real life situations ! these are masturbations.

  • 0:53-0:58 is quite the exciting maneuver! :)

  • grats bro!

  • What kind of person hold a gun 2 inches from your face?

  • BLACK BELT CHOKAPIK

  • ahahah he threw in the gun :D

  • 1st technique made me laugh. Yep, your opponent is going to jump and perform a "suicide" flip for you when you touch his arm

  • @BenLCOTkdPkFr that is actually very accurate what you are saying, juijitsu throws can be centered around getting the person to move how you want them to by twisting them in whichever way.

  • what is the level of black-red belt?

  • @SilentHunter939 7th/8th degree Black Belt = Black-Red belt

  • Keepin it real

  • THUMBS UP I WAS 11 WHEN I ATTENDED THE CHILDREN SESSIONS

  • Que inveja...rrsrs

  • Bad news bears, when someone is about 50+ moves ahead of you!

  • Im not saying hes bad, but I expected more from a 4 stripe brown belt. Theres like no attempt at defense when hes rolling and his speed on the standup defenses is slow.

  • @LionsDenJJ heres my opinion on that rolling statement, u go roll with a master. one of the greatest in the entire world and u try to defend urself from him treating u like a rag doll man.

  • @llaallaa7712 Im not saying i could do better. im a blue belt. im just saying that as a brown belt it doesnt look too technical of a match. maybe im just missing something.

  • pedro sauer has the nicest hair

  • try using that on a sumo

  • @hottamalehottamale i just would run away from a sumo hahaha.

  • 8:50 crazy reflexes

  • im glad some schools still teach helios self defense aspect of bjj.

  • 7 people obviously cant get to black belt :L

  • was this all of the test or were there other parts to it?

    good job and congratulations ^^

  • @5:16 Arte suave.

  • I know you can't apply all self defense moves with full force and resistance against training partners, but the self defense attacks (punches, sticks, etc.) attacks they defend against here are pitiful (no gap-closing, slow motion, zero resistance once a defense is started). What makes BJJ good is applying techniques against resistance otherwise it is just a small subset of JJ, but without the practice you'd need to make it work. I goto a Sauer-affiliate school and we have the same problem.

  • I don't know the student but I was filled w joy to see someone get awarded black belt

  • i thought he did really good haha

There’s just such a good atmosphere there, jiu-jitsu is probly the most sophisticated sport out there, I will get my black belt one day, only in under De La Ri Va

    it

  • i thought he did really good haha

  • Awfull Black belt wanna be. Jesusss.

  • @foca042374 no hes not. you try rolling with pedro sauer and see how long you last. this is just like a blue belt rolling with a black belt, you know whos going to win but its about how much of a fight the lower belt puts up.

  • Im 17, ive just started MMA training, is it smart to get black belt in Bjj or just train normal mma?

  • @HevyToy i think it would be verygood for your mma career to get to about a purple belt in bjj to get a good base and take up mma from there. i think you will find more success like that

  • @HevyToy i would recommend MMA if you are starting at the late age that you are, its not a bad thing im 17 and have been training in ALOT of different arts and i attend MMA practive as well. good luck to you

  • @HevyToy btw i started @ 12, u dont really choose the path it kinda chooses you lol

  • @HevyToy Do yourself a favor, get your BJJ black belt. Learn one art well enough for a base for the rest. You have to be good at all the disciplines and you won't get that way 'training in MMA'. You will simply mash together techniques without any foundation.

  • @sambomuaythaijack You make a very good point. We have mma classes at our gym but we have more classes for bjj and judo. Obviously because grappling is more important. If you want to do MMA, Its better to learn it one at time otherwise you really have no clue what you are doing.

  • @HevyToy Oh and BTW, 17 is not 'late' entry into the sport of MMA or into the art of BJJ. You really won't be 'ready' to fight until your in your mid twenties, furthermore, you don't reach your physical peak until your early to mid-thirties. So, focus on college, a vocation, a skill you can earn a living with and get your BJJ black belt and train to fight. Don't start dreaming of the 'rockNroll' lifestyle MMA pays shit.

  • @scarred10

Regarding your comments below, I agree with your view on the importance of sportive sparring but I think there is a flip side to that were a street attacker will attack you in a much different way than your jitz sparring partners. These drills aren't for traditions sake, their objective is to guide the practitioner's FOCUS to GJJ's applicability in real life

  • yeah i guess so but oh well

  • @jamiegee123 I'm guessing he did since he got the black belt at the end.

  • Did he pass the exam ?

  • incredible control from prof sauer. wow! i remember training at one of his seminars at Guro frank Cuccis' place. back then he was a 4th degree.

  • "Elegant" is a perfect word to describe it. God bless! Congrats. Osss

  • @edomma Thank you!!!

  • Congratulations!

By the way, Pedro's Jiu-jitsu is so elegant! I love it!

  • congrats Professor!

  • how long did it take him to get the black belt?

  • @xiimediaskater

GJJ is AWESOME. I bet you can't produce any video evidence of Shingitai in a real fight, I can produce a ton of it for you with GJJ, wonder if there on to something....

  • I'm a brown belt and am lucky enough to have trained with 8th degree blackbelt Carlos Machado and well this is just how our match went, probably worse, but the point is once you reach that high of a rank, not much you can do against someone thats been training 30 plus more years than you have

  • everyone thinks gracie jujitsu is so awesome but that test was slower than half speed....lol try a real black test with full out attacks and defenses! (Shingitai Jujitsu)

  • @scarred10

Great point about the Turk boxer

  • Pedro Sauer is incredible! So smooth.

That said, shouldn't self-defense be the first thing learned? Not the last?

  • @lsloewen2 I think that white belts are taught self defense but as a brown belt, you're still required to know all that you've learned as a white belt... it takes a while to get to brown so it's sort of a revision for them.

  • very nice

  • just a quick side note peeps, please dont bash on jiu jitsu styles, if youre a true student you learn from anyone on anything

  • This is really good. I like seeing the classical judo throws in there as well.

  • im not trying to be mean but 8:32 looked a little gay

  • belts are only good for holding your pants up

  • @zachasa he survived against 5 clowns including middle aged men. What that turk did was very unlikely and it worked because of weak attackers and he kept moving.1 successful incident out of thousands isnt evidence,it shows how rare it is.

  • calm down i do all that as a green belt budoshin ju jitsu

  • @stickinmypants learning 75 different defenses is bullshit in the extreme, its not possible to react properly to all those attacks. The only reason they are done(and without resistance) is to uphold tradition.Sparring and resisted drilling is the only valuable part of bjj whether self defense or sport.

  • i would give anything to grapple master pedro, it looks like he tells you what he is going to do and no matter what you cant stop it ahaha lol the best and smoothest bjj man in the world

  • Very nice. Great roll! for all you newbies out there, if the brown belt tried harder, so would the teacher. This is a formality, not a competition. Very classy.

  • everyone is pretty giggly. whats s'damn funny

  • @zachasa If you say so, as I said unless your in a movie or the guys are scared and come at your 1 at a time your ass is whooped! If 5 guys bum rush even a "Turkish Boxer" as you say he can at best hit one maybe two at a time. That leaves 3 guys with there hand on you dragging you to the ground and stomping your ass. It is simple not effective to attempt to learn defense for multiple attackers.

  • @iceman250582 what does your comment have to do with you someone testing for their Black Belt in Gracie JIu jitsu ?

  • @GRACIEJIUJITSU100 Obviously you missed reading the comment that I replied to.

  • th gun jioke was awesome.. mr sauer is a legend.. great crucifix 2

  • that looks like roy dean in the mirror the one who teaches here in oregon.

  • He made that dudes base look non-existant

  • so that brown belt really couldnt tapout Pedro Sauer?

  • Great display of skills. Pedro is all class

  • I know a lot of great fighters who trained with Pedro Sauer.

  • no mulitple opponents?? no multiple opponents with weapons?? how do you throw a guy while his buddy stabs you?? great stuff from you guys but I wonder what about these types of situations, what about a home invasion, if you are a blackbelt then I think these should be addressed if this is self-defense. No disrepect just asking

  • @guroeastman

Hello, i don't know much about this style but i don't think this is mainly a self defense style, its more likely a competitive sport.... If you want real self defense look up for krav maga or kayukenbo thats plain defensive and fighting style....

just my opinion dont know alot about this art either

  • @klzglz The funny truth is that defending against a gun or a knife is impossible and although with Krav Maga you have the confidence, in truth it is just as useless as training in Bjj, or even working out at the gym. Knife attacks are done in quick, small, unpredictable bursts in real life, not a slow, arching, predictable stabs or slashes with a windup.

  • @bobby123greenhalgh Whether that's true or not, this isn't a test of reflex, precision, or strength. That kind of training is done in class. This is a formal demonstration to show that the student knows the basic application of the techniques.

  • @guroeastman Far to many people get caught up in the thought that there is a martial art that prepares you for self defense vs multiple opponents or multiple opponents with weapons. The cold hard truth is that unless your in a steven seagal movie when its you vs 5 guys your gonna get you ass whooped!

  • Great Job man, Professor is just too good. Made it look so easy :)

  • 8:10

  • The exam is less intensive than I expected.

  • I love jiu jitsu with all my heart but the knife work is suicidal.

  • Id be so embarassed top do that in front of evry1

  • @IOWNYOURTURFNOW95 I'd give an arm to do it (although I wouldn't be much use with 1 arm). you should take any chance you get to roll with someone as experienced as Pedro.

  • @15leighton umm o bjj is gay man its 4 fukin fags

  • @IOWNYOURTURFNOW95 You should give it a go, I gaurantee you wont have the same opinion when you leave. I've been training for a few months now and im addicted, its a great physical work-out & you continuosly have opportunities to improve.

Give it a go for 1 lesson, most gyms do the first lesson for free aswell so you wont be loosing out, I know your opinion will change.

  • @15leighton well i would have to travel all the way 2 1 of the cities 2 find a gym that specialises in bjj n i already train muay thai so wouldnt have time, thnx anywyaz

  • It's so amazing to watch a guy Like Pedro Sauer who just knows what to do next without even thinking. Really makes BJJ a beautiful thing.

  • Congradulations great job! Well earned. Thanks for sharing with us.

  • so is Gracie Jiu Jitsu BJJ? I'm surprised at how slowly the purple was attacking. In our dojo, the higher grades attack faster and harder.

  • a lot of schools don't have the testing. Do they only do this with affiliate schools that do not have high level black belts there every day?

  • Haha oh my god, is every Gracie/ Gracie Barra Jiu-Jitsu black belt exam under these requirments?

  • @linkin1995 I can't speak for all schools (I'm familiar with Gracie Humaita/Barra) but I know that if you're getting your belt under a legit blackbelt (Pedro, Royler, Relson, etc.) they like to see a lot of self defense. My gym has a brown belt who has a lot of tournament experience, very very smooth and technical grappler who was told he needs to work on the self defense portion, but he could have his black belt if he wanted it. Of course he chose not to take the belt and is studying like crazy.

  • i love bjj but the weapon defense part...

  • The standup stuff looks very impractical. Professor Sauer looks majestic, like art when he rolls.

  • @dogabutila Absolut agree

  • Congratulations! Your hard work and dedication to the "gentle" art has definitely paid off. Good luck!

  • justin was my first jiu jitsu instructor and is very keen on being like proffesor tap and learn no ego. jiu jitsu changed my life i love this art. grats and thanks justin and proffesor!

  • -Este é o rola! Muito legal....

  • I am a bit curious what the instructor's level is. I noticed his belt is red and black striped. Does this mean he is a chair at the top of the organization? And if so, is it a national or international position?

  • @shawandrew international...

  • @shawandrew.... he is Pedro Sauer ... google him ...

  • Technically well executed, but the attacks are too slow, too unrealistic. Watching the video I'm sure this student can do much more than what he's doing, but I think that in a black belt exam everything has to be shown.

  • Wow, watching Pedro Sauer roll is amazing. No wasted energy, so smooth and effortless, doesn't even make a sound. Truly incredible to watch.

  • This kind of makes me want to go for a belt.

  • Power toss at 2:09. If that was on concrete and the victim doesn't know how to roll, he is looking at serious injury! Well put video. Very insightful

  • Is rolling with Sauer makes someone look like a white belt? lol

    he is so fluid.

  • this really motivates me and makes me feel a black belt is attainable!

  • @crazycorey1313 yea but u know black belt just means ur know the basics. i will have a black belt in jiu jitsu some day. as will u if u try

  • That was great!

  • Let's play "Where's Roy Dean?"

  • @vginawhisperer He's by the door frame - I thought it was him but wasn't sure. Had it confirmed when I looked at his website and he was mentioning the seminar with Prof Sauer. Him and Ari Bolden must have two of the must see BJJ youtube subscriptions.

  • @67judoka

    Winner!

  • @67judoka Yes, Roy is sitting down in the reflection off the to left. We chatted for quite a while. Very nice guy and some of the best vids on you tube!

  • i dont know why but i got a chill when this dude got promoted at the end. thats awesome man respect!

  • from 10:14 can anybody tell me whats stopping him from doing a simple bridge or squid? i dont personally learn much bjj or any form of ground fighting but i know some basic stuff. so yeah. just wondering cause thats all i can think of.

  • @Andreechan he is bridging and its called a shrimp not a squid. and he is only a brown belt going against an 8th degree black belt. there shouldnt be much he can do considering proffesor sauer probably has amazing control and of course flow as you can see

  • @XmrCo2X oh yeah shrimping.. sorry. like i said, i dont know much about ground fighting.

    thanks (:

  • @XmrCo2X degrees of black belt have nothing to do with ability, they are for time in grade

  • @scarred10 your right they dont technically represent a higher ability but in a sense they do, do you think that a 1st degree black belt would be able to match an 8ths skill? the answer is no because he has had so much time put into his game that he has created things that would good for him, he has learned more flow and he has mastered many more techniques. so yes your degree of black does have something to do with how good you are

  • @XmrCo2X the mundial champs are mostly 1st degrees, some have only recently got their black belt.Because an 8th dan would be well over 60 yrs old(rickson, machados and sauer arent because they didnt abide by the ibjjf rules) they are not going to be physically able for a 20 yr old black belt but they should be smoother provided they still spar a lot.

  • @XmrCo2X No, Mr. Sauer is a 8th degree black/red belt. Even if the student was black belt, it would be the same outcome each time. A black/red belt has years of experience over even black belts.

  • @Andreechan Here's a more technical reply to your question---- Look again at his control position. He has his right hand in the guys collar. IF the guy bridges to his left, Professor pushes the collar to the floor, and takes his back for a choke. He CAN'T bridge to his right because the hand is there and it presses against the jaw. Shrimping: he can shrimp, and he tries. BUT Professor rides with him and keeps his base steady. If he tries to push Professor while shrimping- he gets armbarred.

  • @bastonydaga ahhh okay thanks (:

  • Love it thanks for sharring :)

  • congrats !

  • Can someone explain the choking thing at the end please?

  • @AndrewCopland i think he was grabbing his lapel and choking him out with his forarm across his neck. one of the advantages of gie sparing.

  • @AndrewCopland Its tradition when some one gets promoted. The rituals vary from school to school. Some times you get lashed with the belts of the higher ranked students... sometimes all the higher ranked or black belt students each throw you to the ground. and also there is the choke wich sometimes they hold until the graduate is unconcious. It is like a right to passage i sapose.

  • Brown belt is not going hard out of respect to Pedro Sauer. Though he would still likely loose in a hard match. This is for sure a soft roll.

  • man that sauer guy sure is bad isnt he

  • Man this is what I want to learn... I mean the BJJ I'm doing is cool, I like it. But we don't get a chance to learn the stand up self defense stuff, against a knife and gun... I wish I had a chance to learn this too. Awesome stuff, Professor Sauer puts out some great students from what I hear

  • @uckushtar

Yeah, well that's because you're probably not even a white belt stupid. Earn your stripes. It takes patience.

  • @heat4yoass

I'm a Blue Belt, and we're a sport and MMA oriented school. We'll never do knife or gun work. Thanks for the reply, but before you do so I suggest you have a stripe or two yourself.

  • @uckushtar

I'm actually a brown belt w/ 2 stripes in Judo. I've learned Judo for almost 10 years. So now what?

  • @heat4yoass

i do judo and there r no stripes. maybe u r a second degree brown belt (nikkyu), but im pretty sure u dont get stripes. or atleast in my dojo u dont. unless ur a junior in which case u wouldnt have a brown belt u would have a purple belt and there wouldnt be any degrees..

  • @heat4yoass Now I suggest you go train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu before you comment on how I'm not even a white belt in an art that I actually train in - and you don't. As far as your brown belt... good for you. It takes a lot of dedication to train for 10 years straight. However, I'm not really concerned how long you've trained for.

  • Congrats.....been a big fan of Submissions 101 for a while now. Reminds me of when I rolled w Helio Soneca (a 4th degree black belt). I was 220lbs and he was prob 150-160, but he made me feel like I was sinking in quicksand. I can't imagine how helpless it must feel against Pedro Sauer. Looking forward to more upload of techniques, and again, congratulations.

  • Congrats! thanks for sharing!

  • ótimas técncias, o Jiu Jitsu é sem sombra de dúvida uma das maiores artes marciais!

  • That's an epic video, guys. You know you're legit when somebody like Sauer awards you a Black Belt. Congratulations....

  • Is this the same for all/most BJJ black belt exams? I mean, having to show the demonstration of all 75 standing things...bla bla..... I've only been doing BJJ for about 2 months now and its no-gi but wow do i wish i could train for a belt :)
