  • Sorry, but Peter Erskine's a pretty average drummer. Many drummers out there better than him in every way...

  • IMHO- best drum solo ever. A solo that feels better than a lot of other drummers' grooves.

  • amazing performance! love it!

  • He's so smooth with it

  • I don't know who the best drummer is, but Erskine is one of the best musicians who plays drums.

  • travis barker?? talk about the great drummers of jazz world....

  • Pete is not only an insanely chill dude, but he has the chops to do anything that the crazy drummers do - he just prefers feel and time over flashiness.

  • fuck

  • the break on 2:25 is awesome!!

  • God, he swings like mad.

  • You wanna see some real drumming listen and watch Erskine from his days with Weather Report.

  • Travis Barker? You're fucking kidding me right? He ain't good enough to carry Erskine's stick bag let alone try to play like him. Jesus I wish people would educate themselves before spewing their ignorance.

  • @mcoope15 I hate that I can't vote this up a billion times.

  • The first rock drummers were all jazz recording artists looking for work. My rock drumming always excels after working diligently on more jazz chops. Ignorance is Bliss and if they didn't see them featured on MTV they dont matter...

  • Barker again?! What is with the 14 year olds of today haha. This solo, has killer feel, the solo actually goes somewhere. It's musical and has depth, it's not just balls out hit as many drums as fast as you can, so over those solos. Every drummer not matter what music you play can learn a thing or two from the great Jazz drummers.

  • even among jazz heads peter erskine is still underrated! (obviously among barker fans). amazing solo.

  • Uno de los grandes maestros en batería de jazz...

  • Travis Barker? Are you kidding? He is a joke! Not even in the same league.

  • Es el con la bateria..que gran toque...delicioso..

  • The greatest drummer that ever lived, imo..!! Musical, melodic, perfect technique, inventive... No-one can touch Peter Erskine..!!

  • Comment removed

  • he's amazing, and he has a beautiful sounding and very small kit...these days, (and speaking only personally) I find big big kits a real turn off, 3 piece, 4 piece, throw in some cymbals, and you can prettty much do anything

  • why have i never heard of him before! amazing! he's got sweet style!

  • Exquisito!

  • LOL some dumb muthafucka had the nerve to say "chad smith is better than travis barker"! I'm still watching peter you square!

  • I wish i could click like multiple times

  • 16 dislikes? What the heck is there to dislike about this performance? Peter is spot on academic with his playing. You cannot argue that there is something to dislike about this piece. It's textbook jazz lay down.

  • @utubeworms It's a great piece of music (I obviously liked it), but I can understand that some teenagers find it boring, at age 13 you don't hear the same things ; )

  • The bass player is also enjoying Peter's solo.

  • EVERYBODY

please don't feed the obvious travis barker trolls. they all know he's nowhere near these jazz greats, but everyone who argues with them play right into their hands. Please do yourselves a favor, and simply ignore them. It's better for everyone.

That being said, Peter's phrasing and control is out of this world

  • that kit sounds like a dream D:

  • Not many drummers are as chilled as Peter E (maybe the guy on Bill Withers's Ain't No Sunshine but that was nowhere near as much of a stretch as this solo).

I'd love to be that relaxed when I play. Not only does it look like fun but the sound he's drawing from the drums with that silky touch of his is delicious. A special player.

  • Fantastica l'espressione di Peter a 4,00 quando termina il solo come dire "sarà piaciuto quello che ho fatto" i grandi si distinguono anche da questo per la loro semplicità e umiltà,Peter sei un Maestro!!

  • @JoeJacari Lol, I like the new hospitality you've developed. But I guess I'm try to tell you that you should stop preaching about Travis Barker on videos like this because of a few reasons. 1) If people wanted to look up Travis Barker, they would look him up; you do not need to keep shove him down our throats. 2) Travis Barker is not even remotely close to the topic of this video; so why bring his name up?. And 3) Your gonna get people (like me) to argue about your logic and reasoning.

  • @JoeJacari You again? I think i talked to you on an Antonio Sanchez video lol. You were saying the same thing about how Travis Barker is better than everyone. Just fucking drop it, ok? Has it not hit you upside the head yet that no one wants to hear about Travis Barker on the videos of jazz legends? The two genres of TB and these jazz legends contradict each other too much for you to be "preaching" on these videos. One genre is music, and one of them is just mindless, upside down bashing.

  • @JoeJacari Everything you just said, even though it was said with all the correct grammar, unlike anyone else supporting Barker, and finesse, unlike anyone else supporting Barker....

Is a big load of shite. Barker doesn't touch this stuff. Just an over-glorified drummerfor a punk band.

I'm not being biased, how? I'm going to see Blink 182 in Cardiff next year.

  • ManelRuivo is an idiot from what is seen here. Erskine is amazing, and with his rhythmic ability and understanding he could play anything. Chad is a good rock drummer, but the only thing he would do that Erskine probably wouldnt is hitting the drums way harder and making sure that is seen by the audience. In terms of timing, it's not even up foe discussion... And Dream Theater fucking blows.

  • How do you learn to play like that? :D

  • great sound, great feel, subtle, groovin, man what more can you say.

  • I know I'm not gonna change anyones opinion on Travis Barker but compared to this guy, he blows. I'm a drummer and I can do Barker's stuff with one hand literally.

  • barker is not even 1% of erskine

  • @legnacilyz Barker is the 99%. He needs to Occupy Peter Erskine to appropriate some of his skills!

  • @legnacilyz Yeh, agreed 100%. Barker's got that super fast single stroke roll, but could Travis Barker ever even dream of putting together a piece of percussion 'music', that comes anywhere even close to this???

Peter Erskine doesn't play drums solos — he plays pieces of music: There's a difference...

  • why are we talking about chad smith and travis barker on a peter erskine video?

  • @thealmightypat chad smith pwns travis barker

  • @thealmightypat yeah.i'm pretty sure travis barker jerks of to vids like this. Chad smith's cool. In reality, i'm sure if you asked either of them, they'd both say they worship guys like Erskine, Vinnie, Weckl, Hakim etc...

  • How the hell can you say Travis is better than Chad Smith???ARe you fucking mental, its what Chad doesnt do that shows his ability. He plays exactly whats needed behind a kit and nothing more. Thats why he's one of the greatest pop / funk drummers for years. Just listen to him. and yes you might be able to imitate what he does behind a kit, but that doesnt mean that you sound anything like him. He is so powerful and rhythmic that not many other drummers can match up to his style. Suck it bitches

  • @spanishfoo I agree. sad that people superestimate jazz like the MOST DIFICULT STYLE EVER!!! thats not true. the arrange decides the dificult of the music, and a simple song can be arranged to be frickin hard. also a good musician can transform simple patterns in a hard stuff, when they put style, feel and sound! they should listen "funky drummer" and basslines from james jamerson.

  • Poor communication on the lead in at the end.

  • Juicy, tasty, beautiful!

  • absolutely brilliant technique, dynamics, groove, tempo, drive, tension, construction, creativity! thank you, was a real pleasure to listen!

  • Smooth as glass.

  • And people think Chad Smith is a great drummer?

  • @DCussen lol i used to dog on him but he's one of those mediocre drummers. he's good. not great.

  • @DCussen dont talk shit, man. chad is awesome. Rhcp is legendary, no matter how much technique the musicians have. also chad and erskine are MILES AWAY in terms of style. in jazz chad would suck, and erskine would suck in rock aswell. both are great, just VERY different.

  • @ManelRuivo Dude, their styles are different, but playing jazz is WAY harder than these sycopated rock beats. If you play, you won't even argue that. Peter Erskine is the legend, though he's not as well known. There's nothing Chad does that wows people (except non-drummers) He's kind of a modern day Tommy Lee. He's intense, showy, keeps his tempos well, but if you're looking for good rock drummers check out Niel Peart, Simon Phillips, and Terry Bozzio.

  • @DCussen man,i know all these guys and im still sure chad is awesome. chad is funky without lose weight in his playing. hes creative in his grooves, that are never unsophisticated. and his timing is so remarcable, that all the albums of rhcp are recorded live in studio WITHOUT a metronome. this is NOT a small feat, man. and about jazz being waaay harder, now i only agree with this in therms of harmony, cause tecnically and rithmically it can be as demanding as jazz. see rush and dream theater ;)

  • @ManelRuivo MOST rock is easier than jazz, not Dream Theatre, Rush, Yes, advanced stuff like that. Chad absolutely could not play for any of those bands. I'm not saying he sucks, but to say he's legendary is insane. I can do everything he does. Drummers like Jojo Mayer, Dave Weckl, Virgil Donati, Dennis Chambers. Those guys are legendary, Chad is not. Travis Barker has this huge youtube fan base, too, I don't understand it. Even he is better than Chad. That said, Chad has a sweet groove.

  • @DCussen he didn't say chad is legendary he said rhcp are....

  • @julianisdope word! :D

  • @ManelRuivo Uh, NO, Erskine would not -- and does not -- suck at rock. That might be one of the most retarded things I've ever heard.

  • @dufortrph you ever saw him play rock? just post a video and shut up.

  • @ManelRuivo Saw him live with Steely Dan in the late 90's. The tour was chronicled on the "Alive in America" CD. He can play a rock groove -- and solos, and fills -- better than 99.9% of drummers on the planet.

Did I use any words that were too big for you, you illiterate shithead?

  • One of the most superb drummers...ever. No further comments.

  • wowwwwwww great peter !!

  • did anyone stop to chek out how many strings are on the bass in the background?

  • @BreaktheDrought Who cares?

  • i love the face he makes when he creeps into the head like a ninja

  • amazing snare sound

  • Cats and Kittens.

  • this is fucken beautiful .

  • almost sound like buddy rich to me

  • He looks like my agronomy professor!!!

  • What is the reason behind trad grip style i play match grip and have all my life i know everyone is different but what is the actualy reason? superb drummer by the way

  • @Edwardo1993

It changes the way you play. Just like only playing with a single bass drum changes the way you play, as opposed to having two. I find that I have more control over the stick, and my dynamics, if I am playing traditional, but that's me.

  • @shadowseal22 I see thanks for the info :)

  • 3:22 - 3:25 what was that!!! :) :) :)

  • Great job Peter!! Let's talk soon!

  • there's no beating this guy as far as nuances are concerned...

  • Talk about "melodic solo playing"; this guy sings on the drums!

  • Love the second line inspired grove.

  • How could you not like this video? I don't honestly understand.

  • Style, taste, technique. Excellent!

  • Now everytime I see the name 'Peter' in a book, I get the image that he looks like Peter Erskine.

  • Im not a big Jazz guy. But there is just something about Peter that rocks my boat everytime i hear him play. Jesus.

  • No wonder my drum teacher referred me to this guy :O

    this is savagely groovy

  • Josh Freese!!!

  • tasty...tasty...tasty

  • Peter is a lovely, tasteful drummer. Loving the flams at 3:46 onwards. Well fucking groovy.

Keith Carlock is obviously a fan. He holds his left stick the same. But I believe they both studied with Ed Soph. So who knows?

  • Is this the same guy who played with Ferguson back in the '70s?

  • Peter looks so much like a High School Math Teacher. And i believe since he doesn´t show off with his skills like many others, plus this Teacher look, a lot of people don´t realize how great he really is. Ecspecially this solo shows that a solo doens´t have to be a massacre on 8 drumheads at the same time. you can hear the underlaying groove at all times, and that shows how much musicality this man has. My all time favourite drummer!!!!

  • loose and beautiful. Great Peter.

  • Peace and awesome :o)

  • he makes me want to play...

    his touch is amazing

  • Charleston foot....notevole

  • very very good!

  • In. The. Pocket. Pete is The Kid.

  • CoOL

  • I wonder if him and his nephew ever jam

  • what an amazing drummer! Love this guy forever. Tasty stuff!

  • yea pete, rip tits!

  • wonderful story-telling.

  • 4:03 "sup"

  • this is why i love Peter Erskine

  • What's the title of this song?!

  • @ianidinuse i think it's "Cats & Kittens"

  • @ivansamudra8000 You thought right! Thank you! :D

  • I'm gonna brag for a second...I know this guys nephew and i really wanna ask to meet him he seems like a cool guy.

  • This is really good. He didn't have to be shreddin' like Weckl to make me listen to it all over again.

  • la leyenda de la bateria uno de los mejores exponentes de este instrumento lo que hace aqui es maravilloso

  • Wow. It's sure fun to see someone who has mastered their craft performing it. Great control, subtle, relaxed, wonderful. I really enjoy the balance between his hands and the rebound of the sticks off of the heads. He makes it look easy, for him, probably is, only after 1000s of hours in the woodshed! Nice post, thanks for putting this video up!

  • does anyone notice he's got the same kit as keith carlock?

  • so melodic and rhymic

  • this man is killing it!!!! Erskine 4 President!!!

  • i love the bass player totally feeling that awesome solo

  • well technically the fulcrum of your left hand is at the point in which ur thumb and index finger cross, so if you notice the fulcrum on the left hand is located at the same place as the fulcrum on the right hand

  • I could never figure out how these drummers that hold the left stick so far towards the butt end can play so well. I know you can generate alot of power that way but for me the balance and sensitivity is way off, but Peter can sure play that style great.

  • @stevebul if you are playing with a moeller stroke like he is it doesn't matter where you hold it.

  • I'M MUCH BETTER!! CHECK OUT MY VID!

  • @ElJazz93 Just shh...

  • que monstruo......es el mejor...y además muy simpático!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE YOUR MUSIC PETER!!!!!

  • That was a Master of His Craft showing his personal Mastery of the Craft~~~! Awe-inspiring talent~and an impeccable countenance to go along with it.

  • 50% master 50% monster

i was a client of his dad many years ago, but mostly during our meetings we just talked about drums....and peter, of course

much respect for his chops, thanks for the video!

  • Juicy!! Played like the Master he is!

  • wow. the most admirable touch. wow.

  • seriously, 12 people thumbs down is 12 too many. in what way did four minutes of this killer-ness bum you out?

  • @acidmnky those 12 don't what they are watching, if you ask them who is better they would say Nicko Macbrian's of Iron Maiden :)))

  • watching him with the maynard ferguson band in the 70's was a sight unlike any other

  • Oh Yeah! Great tone & groove ! Wow ! Love it !

  • He's pure inspiration!

  • Peter is just getting better with age.

  • not my musikstyle but absolutly nice play. u can say what ever u want :-D

  • nojento a facilidade q esse fela toca!

  • This guy can outgroove Gadd. Word. And has way better swing and all around chops too.IMO

  • @Youwishyoucouldplay , outgroove gadd ? oh please....

  • @rudeboyread You notice all the other posts in here talking about how tasty the groove here is and how much a musical genius Peter is? Did you write to those comments too? Sorry twerp, Gadd doesn't own any patents on groove. Why? cause he didn't invent groove. And although proficient at it. he is far away from the best.

  • @Youwishyoucouldplay , relax a bit...

i prefer gadd to erskine thats all, my opinion nothing more. they are both great players.

can we not express our opinions on here without name calling ?

  • 2222loko I have a feeling you have no idea of what music is about..take a look if you can and read the article in Drumhead magazine about Erskine in Dec. of 2008..this guy is a musical genius..i had the great pleasure of helping this guy at the Cymbal Summit at the Memphis Drum Shop last month and he is the nicest, down to earth guy.

He knows music and he knows how to make the drums sing and be a musical instrument....I'd love to see a video of you playing anything remotely close to this...

  • i used to play like that when i was 15

  • this old man sucks

  • @2222loko

Not very hip to the intricate aspects of drumming, 'eh?

  • fantastic!

  • Beautiful solo. This is much preferred over other jazz/jazz fusion solos (even Weckl's sometimes) where it's just an exercise in speed with no grove. This groove is just sick . . . .

  • Great Stuff!!!!!

  • Peter is Hot!!

  • I like his signature vic firth "ride stick" great for jazz and everything else!

  • Are they super tiny like all the other jazz sticks? Or do they have a little meat on them?

  • @spacitydrummer4JC they are pretty small, but they have enough beef to play ANY style..and I mean ANY..love these sticks

  • thank you

  • Man, that's so cool and laidback and flowing, LOVE IT!!!

  • Erskine, um, the family moto is, "Je Pense Plus." We think more. Any one of us could have done that but each of us have done something else. This one of us is a great drummer. Truly great.

  • What a fantastic drummer, one of the most talented ever..

Does anyone know what is his snare in this video ?

  • Man, he's smooth...Makes it look effortless.

  • Nice! Peter Erskine, Nice!

  • Ha! So know I know where Carlock got most of his grooves from.

  • @philateliceun

hahaha your not kidding! even yamaha drums and zildjian cymbals too!

  • @philateliceun I thought you where gonna say hair :-)

  • @philateliceun yeah no way, its all second line stuff i think.

  • @philateliceun Good point! Though the difference is Erskine can do lots more. I respect Carlock's talent, but there's something about Erskine- especially for me on 'Invitation' that just blows my mind.

  • @philateliceun

    and his grip..

  • @philateliceun no doubt

  • Yeah, haha. Leave the video playing, scroll down on the page, and it sounds just like Carlock.

  • @spacitydrummer4JC You're absolutely right.

  • unbeleivable, but I wish the band hadn't forced him back in, it was just gettin goin

  • Awesome stuff. Erskine, Steve Smith and Jojo Mayer are hands down my favourite drummers of all time. Each one has impeccable physical technique, coupled with extreme musicality and taste. Musicians like these are on a different plane of existence to us mere mortals!

  • i think dave weckl could be in that group

  • dave is more a fusion drummer

  • Having some trouble figuring out the sticking on that roll/triplet fill he does at 00:21

    Any help?

  • @chnihy This is just what I think, not sure. I think he is doing triplets

    RRR RRR LLL LLL

Just what is seems to me... And on the snare's are ghost notes. I'm a beginner though, so try it out first, if I'm not hitting the jackpot ask a pro...
