I don't the fact that they are not in regulation uniforms due to the heat is kind of nice Just think about it here they come across the field of battle and instead of General Longstreet turning to his aid and saying. "Look at what is in front of us it is the New York Brigade THE BLACK HATS!" Instead he can say. "Look what we have in front of us it is the the New York Brigade THE HOT PANTS!"
LOL, I'm pretty sure there were people in that parade (in other drum corps) wearing hot pants. Not that anyone, Longstreet included, would want to see it.
But you must remember that it is the civil war and when a good part of the forces were volunteer units and so equipped with what ever uniforms the unit commander bought. There were several regiments that had the uniforms of French Chausseurs a pied from the Napoleonic wars lol. So there wasnt much in the way of regulation early on. One thing though they need a sack coat on at least with the top button buttoned or else one would get a fine in the Federal Army.
Man, me and josh and steve on snare?, that WAS a long time ago! Was that DRAM 2004? I seem to remember scorching heat and LOTS of heavy rain, fun times :-D.
Ignore the uniform stuff close your eyes and listen to it. The sound is great..i've heard some good Southern songs played on origional brass instruments and ya cant closer than that!. Great stuff guys!
the uniforms are in disarray because it was 105 degrees and it was just a muster parade, not a reenactment, loads of other corps were going with partial uniforms, even Moodus Drum And Fife Corps went without their coats that year IIRC...
I can relate to that. I was down at Antietam once in July and thought it'd be fun to bring my uniform over and walk the battlefield..big mistake!! I ended up wearing a battle-shirt lol..to us English your heat is something else haha. Good video guys!!
OK, that explains it. I thought for a moment, "Where are their jackets?," however I understand now. 105 degrees in full uniform would've probably killed me.
6 hole Firth & Pond reproductions made by Ron Peeler. They're excellent fifes, great tone, almost no hissing and as historically accurate as we can get. Awesome video you go there, great corps, can't wait to see more of you.
Words written during the first year of the Civil War by Julia Ward Howe to the tune of the older melody sung as "John Brown's Body." This is a distinctly Union anthem.
these old ancient hymns make me want to cry too, I was a marcher in high school, snare and tom-toms cymbals you name it there is nothing so stirringly American historically and culturally. RIP Otho Turner the last great American fife and drum composer and performer.

was this battle hymn done in the Civil War or WWI, and if it was done in the Civil War, was it for the Union or the Confederacy?

Great Job, Folks!
I love The Battle Hymn of the Republic, and you hit it real nice.
I'll post a video response, too.
I love parades. Bands like yours make or break parades for me. And you guys would be a "make"
