I heard a rumour this song was written to pull the piss outta Bauhaus and their genre. Although Bauhaus and Birthday Party shared the stagein Europe many moons ago.
i find him really funny. so many of his over-the-top freudian stuff comes out hilarious these days. he's clearly having fun with his overwrought back catalog (which i love, don't get me wrong). i like that he's not taking himself seriously from the perspective of sobriety and not just being too stoned to take it all in.
People generally slag of the 80's and I always think. are you fucking kidding? we had the Birthday Party, the Butthole Surfers and now you got Coldplay and more Coldplay...
Back then I was what might be considered "goth" today-I was jut considered a "punk" for whatever reason. People label-it's used to clarify things- it's human nature. We use words, we label. I used to listen to this a lot....but I would never consider them goth. Not Nick Cave!
I get the same thing! The more I listen, the more I love them. I've heard them referred to as having elements of "Post-punk" and "Garage", but they also have some Rockabilly sound when it comes to their rhythm and guitar sound. If you like the birthday party, I suggest giving a listen to The Cramps and Old Time Relijun, along with Nick Cave's other projects.
It sounds like a lot of their stuff was influenced by the No Wave movement. To me, the Birthday Party sounds similar to a band called DNA. Although the Birthday Party took it to another level.
Saw them at old New York hotel in Brisbane. Worked at 4ZZZ at the time and helped to carry the equipment up 4 flights of stairs. When these guys walked in my mouth just dropped.
The Boys Next Door,The Birthday Party,The Bad Seeds and Now Grinderman!!! Nick Cave is a Rock God.He is th e King He is He is the King HEEE is the King!

This was the first thing I ever saw/heard of the birthday party on rage and I slightly knew of the bad seeds. It scared me at first but I recorded it. My friend liked it so I watched it again and I loved it. It opened my eyes to a whole different genre of music, a genre that hasn't a name. Does anybody know of anywhere I can download this?
