Could you imagine if Elvis was alive to sit in with them on this? he and Tom were close buddies back in the day and I'm sure he would have loved to sit in and jam with these Cool Cats.
Tom Jones... serious respect, man. Van and Jeff Beck, already understood. Tom you deserve a seat right alongside them. This is a great performance all around.
My man John Cleary on piano. All of these guys have performed at Jazz Fest in the last 2 years come to think of it. Tom Jones did a credible version of Iko Iko. He is fabulous here..Van always is.
I'm surprised Van is starting to look like W.C. Fields. Excellent display of talent though. Tom Jones may have a good voice but he's full of shit. A Chia headed bullshit artist. Why would Morrison or Beck even pour him a drink?
@KipJordy1 How is Tom a bullshit artist? From his debut to 73 no one could surpass him as a singer. NO ONE. He could destroy any soul singer at the time especially Motown artists with the exception of Stevie Wonder but even Wonder never achieved the level of vibrato power and control or the blues emotion Tom could put into a song. Most of Tom's signature songs, which are amazing musically and lyrically, have not been covered for one reason. How the hell can you top Tom Jones?
Back in 1970 I took a date to see Tom Jones live. I didn't care crap for him or the pricey tickets, but I did like the girl I took. Took me a while to realize that she didn't care squat for me; she just wanted a free ticket. At the end of the concert the girls rushed the stage and grabbed what they could of his clothing. My date got his handkerchief. I was astonished at how feminine the perfumed hankie smelled! Anyway... I still don't like Jones because I didn't get laid that night.
Van has always done blues, he's recorded with John Lee Hooker songs like "Never get out of this blues alive", "Don't look back", "Serves me right to suffer" and also with BB King "If you love me". On Philosopher's stone - "Ordinary people. He's recorded standards like "St James infirmary", "Help me", "Georgia on my mind" and his own compositions like "Fast train", "Lonely avenue", "Big time operators" and "Choppin' wood". Also "Good morning blues", "Back of town blues" so plenty Van blues!
I love Beck's guitar work but listen around 1:30 and you can hear that he is not in synch with what the vocalists are doing. He goes off and does a noisy, out of touch thing. Listen around 2:24 too and Jeff is just not with the rest of the group. What's up? He is a better artist than that.
Who knew Tom Jones could sing soul so well? Van the man personifies blue-eyed soul, but now we gotta ad Tom Jones to the mix. Good to hear some prime jeff beck guitar behind them - he's wailing!
For those who disregard Tom Jones because some of his work has been schmaltzy or Vegasy, take a listen to this! That man can and always has been able to sing amazingly! Lord have mercy haha.
@browncarlay1 It's one DVD of a 2003 DVD series the History of the Blues by Martin Scorcese this particular episode DVD is called "Red, White and Blues" the British Invasion. It has been aired on TV in the US (PBS), Britain and Australia several times. Just google where you can buy that. (The cd has not got Van on it!)
@browncarlay1 No it's not on the cd, only on the DVD "Red White & Blues" from History of the Blues series (by Martin Scorcese) which has been on TV in the US and Australia several times.

Van if u reading dis ignore the gutter Press... in your own words "wont let the b....rds grind me down No on comes close to your genius. Roll on London Feis
@88wildcat the chords I believe are indentical to Key to the highway, They could have easily included the lyrics in this hybrid. Where's Clapton when you need him?
@yanis3: Where's Clapton? Are you kidding? Beck isn't some rookie who just hitched a ride into town on last night's train... he's an all-time great himself. he's laying it down as good as Clapton would do, maybe better!
@GeorgiaBoy1961 I love Jeff Beck. But since 90 percent of human communication is non verbal, its not surprising you read my comment as a put-down to Beck. Since this documentary featured performances by the best of the british blues players, it would have been awesome if Clapton had made it. Hearing that eight bar blues really made me long for a bit of his singing and playing.
The DVD is Red, White & Blues - The British Invasion. This one of the DVD's about the Blues which ran as a TV program called Red White and Blues around the world. It is a fantastic DVD series film made by martin Scorcese mainly focussing on the roots and development of the Blues and all it's artists. This particular one talks about the US blues artists coming to Britain and the British taking to the blues.
This clip is great. I actually searched for it since I am looking for this DVD, which I saw once a few years ago. Voss, or anyone else, what is the name of this DVD?
This is amazing! The whole feature is great. Thanks for sharing. Jeff Beck is the man.

I had forgotten how good Mr. Morrison actually sounds. He has an intrinsic sense of old school delivery that most don't see the need to emulate.
