  • so sad song and so much with wisdom.. shaking my bones vibrating my heart!!!

  • His most poetical song. Nothing more to say. It would only sound trite.

  • after hearing this song on a wreck dive video im hooked.

  • @nickepicke76 has encouraged me to reply with ditto, ditto and ditto. And last but not least ditto. There really is nothing more to say.

  • @royser1

    Wait a sec here.

I was under the impression that the K-man did this song for a movie about extraterrestrials RESCUING us from a future of decay and utterly self defeating capitalism.

Nonetheless there are Knopfler knumbers that are easier to listen to.

  • @tiktoffG13 As opposed to the self - inspiring, uplifting, freedom of socialism/communism?

  • @vintagestrat100 they just dont understand it.

  • I have so much respect for this man as a musician, and a songwriter, and a human being. He conducts himself with such stlye and grace and humility it's difficult NOT to love him and his fans. He has an angel in his pocket!

  • Pure story telling genius, oh, and he can play a guitar. Seen him live twice.

    Well worth the price.

  • The best songwriter in the world. My personal opinion.

    His music is so amazing.

  • @nickepicke76 No question about it. Back in "The Day" kids would chant: "Clapton is God!" With no disrespect intended to Eric, Mark has taken all contemporary guitarists to school. Although I would never be so blasphemous as to say that Mark Knopfler is God, I can't help but feel that his gift is from that source. In my humble opinion, he is the best musician who ever took the stage. If there was only one artist I could keep in my collection, it would be Mark by a mile.

  • @greasegun49

If you only could keep one of his albums (dire straits included) which one would you keep.

I would probably choose shangri-la, or on every street.

  • @nickepicke76 That's a tough one. Mark is exactly the same age as I am, nearly to the day, so I appreciate what he's doing in his later years. But the stuff he did with Dire Straits still rocks me hard. I'm thinking maybe "On The Night". No. I think "Get Lucky" would be it. No, wait...Ah Nick, I need them all. Tonight my answer is "Get Lucky." And we'll see what tomorrow brings. 'Cause after all the violence and double talk, there's just a song....

  • @nickepicke76 Nick, I'm sorry. I'm new to this and I replied without signing my wife out first. Don't really matter; she feels about the same as I do. Dianabee had "Walk Of Life" played at my sons wedding. My boy grew up listening to "Sultans" and the "MTV" piece. Wife loves them too.

  • The nature of this song has inherited some genes of Brothers in Arms (Dire Straits). Listen first before arguing, please.

  • Hard core Celtic.........absolutely beautiful. It's not the story of a ship, but an industry that dies in Glasgow and other great ship building ports. I think it speaks to those of us who have been marooned in life because of age or whatever. I love this song. MK is The Best.....no argument.

  • @radxone you've got it man. This is about the stagnant decay and utter waste of capitalism

  • I want this song played at my funeral.

  • If a movie is ever made of the Highlander saga "Outlander/Cross Stitch" series, Mark Knopfler should contribute greatly to the sound track. Haunting music for a haunting tale. Diana Gabaldon, are you listening?

  • It is hard for me to understand why She has not Knighted him as yet..He is certainly deserving, and a National Treasure. Is there anyone there that can offer the suggestion ??

  • It is like a musical history. I know this is weird, but after listening to some of his songs I look up stuff on the internet. I never knew what Albion was until I heard him.

  • immer wieder schön anzuhöhren...

  • Дядька душевно пишет и поёт,дай Бог ему ещё столько же сделать.

  • I Just Love This Musican Legend,

    Mark Knopfler is Awesome.

No one will Never Get Close To His Standard!! ..

  • I've listened to this man's music for years. He's been the only guitarist/song writer to make me cry like a baby with his music. Only Knopfler could write something so poetic and beautiful about where a decommissioned ship goes to die

  • This is a poetic song about death. “Glasgow and Newcastle were shipbuilding towns and world famous forengineering excellence. As a child, I’d lie in bed and listen to the foghorns. A breaking yard in India is a long way for a beautiful Clyde-built ship to go to die."

  • Allways surprising with new beautifull music and lirycs.

  • amazeing stuff from a musical genius.. great to hear him singoing about the working classs of scotland, its so nice to seee a rich successfull musician keep his feet on the ground and go back to his roots ..glasgow "the clyde"

  • Genialer Mensch !!!

  • Had i not watched a ship breaking video just before this i would've probably not liked this anything like as much as I did. Great song when you know the context

  • i respect the people with their handicap for disliking this music.

  • The amazing thing about Marks' solo material, unlike his Dire Straits stuff, is that at first it just seems good, but not brilliant, but gradually you're just drawn to listen to it more and more, and then you realize that at least on some level it's even more brilliant than Dire Straits...!!

  • @GeorgeTel100 Exactly! I find when I get a new Knopfler solo album, I'm slightly let down, as I'm looking for the flair in guitar playing from the Dire Straits days, or perhaps something with more energy. Upon listening a few times, the solo stuff grows on you, as you realize his mature/spiritual take on so many things in life, and you find yourself humming tunes in your head. The man is awesome, and a true class act!

  • @greenwich1754 Thanks for the response, always nice to know; we're lucky we have his music in our lives, you're right he is awesome, more so than I ever realized before; take care!

  • Was brought up not far away from Mark!! and know exactly how he feels about this song.. Lot of feeling in it for the Clyde and the men who built the ships.. My old man was one of them!

Brilliant musician ,,, wont be too many more like him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • is the ship a metaphor for something?

  • @winggoddess actrolly if u type the name of the song into google + meaning you will get an article about ships that are rammed into the shoreline during high tied and dismantled almost by hand. It's very intresting. Check it out. I don't know if this is exactly it, but someone made a good guess and its the best bet for me. hope this helps. :)

  • @Adem242 well i understood that the lyrics were talking about ships being dismantled on the shore... but he sounds sympathetic about this like it's a tragedy so i was wondering if he was simply feeling sorry for the ships, or if the ships were a metaphor for something more being used, taken advantage of, destroyed, etc.

  • @winggoddess And "the Clyde" is the Scottish river, or what? :)

  • @selfenten yes - its a scottish river famous for ship building in the old days

  • @winggoddess i don't really know. depends on how he feels about oil rigs. idk he writes about a lot of obscure things. lol.

  • @winggoddess Yep, but... you can't go so much rational with a song... it there's a second meaning, it will be a different one depending on who's listening. I think it's a song about the walk of live... a recurring theme on knopfler's songs. It's about a sad, almost anonymous end, so far from home... but there is someone that still remembers (the captain)

  • @ClyderSkyner yeah different people can read different meanings into things. but i was just wondering if anyone knew if mark knopfler himself had a particular metaphorical meaning for this song, or if twas totally literal.

  • Seriously, I dont think this guy is human. so much good stuff from one man, impossible!!

  • Comment removed

  • vote for knopfler in rock and roll hall of fame!

  • there are pictures old letters and poems in my grandparents things that talk of the Clyde and their voyage here to Canada. this song reminds me very much of those items.

  • Can't stop listening to it...

  • Iam willing to bet that anyone who knocks this song,no.1,he's not Scottish, hasn't a clue what the Clyde is,where it is,and what the song is about. Now be honest, tell the truth, post your comment, the information is there, just ask,SLAINTE.

  • Another brilliant song fae Mark,Its Mark going back tae his routes, back tae where he wiz born,Bonny Scottland,Glasgow, Gid stuff. SLAINTE.

  • Sublime

  • Labai graži daina, super.

  • Labai graži daina, super.

  • @ttefteliss Pritariu, Mark FTW! :D

  • 7 people are justin bieber's fans

  • fantastic - as usual

  • I can't believe this song is causing arguments! There should be 100,000 views and 0 comments. That's like watching him live and then texting on your phone - you just don't do it!

  • sucks

  • @Mubble

  • This is a beautiful song. Wow. Thanks for posting!

  • why didn't he play this in concert?

  • Comment removed

  • 7 dislikes, deaf fucks - Riyanna, lady gaga & beiber fans. Why dont you do us all and mankind a favour and get the fuck off a cliff. How can you not like this, is beyond me.

  • @fIRsTRATmAN

Why don't YOU do us all a favour and stop bitching.

If people don't like it...does it affect your life?

Listen to the music and shut the fuck up.

  • @theyorkshirewhites listen you bitch, seems to me like i hit a soft spot,go back to listening to biber & gaga you dumb thick headed hillbilly. Why the fuck are you swearing you at me you sad cunt. Have I said anything to u? NO. Seem's like your the one bitching u sorry fuck. Its called having a sense of humour, you prick. I hate cunts like you who start swearing at random people on the net, if i saw u in real life i would beat the fuck outta you, you faggot. Have a nice day and go fuck yourself.

  • @fIRsTRATmAN

What exactly was supposed to be humorous about your comment ?

" I hate cunts like you who start swearing at random people on the net "

" Why the fuck are you swearing at me you sad cunt "

    Ever heard of irony?

Btw.if I liked beiber or gaga I wouldn't be on here listening to a class musician like Knopfler.

As I said..listen to the music and shut the fuck up !

  • Comment removed

  • @fIRsTRATmAN

Yes I swore at you, but when you swore you back I didn't complain about it did I?

Doesn't bother me, it's just words on a computer screen.

Actually it's quite surprising how you use a lot of words......Most of them begin with F, which shows how low your IQ is....but you manage to say very little.

  • @theyorkshirewhites I was talking about the deaf 7 cunts who disliked this video & describing them. Youtube is freedom of speech. Did i say anything to you NO.saying shut the fuck up, is that respectful NO,is that swearing Yes,go ask anyone with half a brain. If anyone said that to me in real life,i wud beat the fuck outta them.I have no heat with u why start a fucking argument over something we both love.If u read my comment properly u can see im passonate about MK.

  • @fIRsTRATmAN

And I was replying the way I did because | don't see why you refer to them as " deaf cunts " just because they don't happen to like this music.

    Where's your tolerance?

I love MK/Dire Straits, but I don't swear at people who press the dislike button...Youtube is also freedom to vote like or dislike.

Live And Let Live..enjoy the music.

  • @theyorkshirewhites its got nothing to do with tolerance,i think someone has to be a deaf retard not to like MK's music. The music scene the way it is today is because of deaf retards, all this rap shit & dumb beiber, gaga riyanna crap thats on is killing real music bcoz real artists are starving, not getting record deal's, i work with many musicians, i know what is going on.There are no more Guitar Hero's and MK is one of the few last. Most of the youth and teens etc dont know what music is.

  • @fIRsTRATmAN

It has EVERYTHING to with tolerance, you can't expect everybody to like the same type of music, how boring would that be?

Young kids are not going to like the same as the older generation, and it's always been that way.

In the 60's some parents didn't like The Beatles or The Stones etc, that's just the way it is.

You like it so you listen to it, let them listen to what they want. I hate Rap/Hip Hop etc, so I just ignore it.

Calling them deaf fucks isn't going to change a thing.

  • @theyorkshirewhites Im not bothered whether they change or not, and frankly you need to chill out. They are deaf fucks in my opinion. And by the way there are lots and lots of young people that do like MK and good music. I dont blame parents not liking the Beatles, I dont like them myself. I listen to all forms of good music that includes classical aswell. I belive people who like commercial shit like riyanna, gaga, bebier etc are deaf fucks and abit slow & dont know what music is.

  • @fIRsTRATmAN

I need to chill out ??

I'm not the one calling people deaf fucks because they don't share my taste in music.

It doesn't bother me what others like..if I like it I listen to it, if not I don't.

    Have a Prozak.

  • Comment removed

  • @theyorkshirewhites I'LL SAY IT AGAIN PEOPLE WHO LIKE DUMB SHIT LIKE GAGA,REIYANANA,BEIBER AND ALL THE COMMERCIAL SHIT ARE DEAF AND DUMB.

I DONT CALL PEOPLE WHO DONT SHARE MY TASTE IN MUSIC DEAF/ DUMB B'COZ PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENT TASTES, I RESPECT THAT. I DONT CALL COMMERCIAL SHIT MUSIC, I CALL IT CRAP & IF PEOPLE LOVE CRAP THEN I CALL THEM RETARDED. IF THEY LOVE THAT SHIT THEN I PITTY THE FOOL WHO'S HELL BENT ON SAYING THATS MUSIC LIKE URSELF. HAPPY NEW YEAR.

    fIRsTRATmAN 3 seconds ago

  • @fIRsTRATmAN why mention those names on here? why not just focus on this music instead of worrying about other peoples tastes

  • @theyorkshirewhites U keep telling me it doesnt bother u wht others like then why did it bother u wht I said? Wheres your tolerance? Why didnt u just carry on instead of commenting on something u didnt like? Why did u bother to comment on my post & start to use fowl language if it didnt bother u what i said. Why didnt you just ignore it? You keep saying "things dont bother me and im tolerant" Where is ur tolerance?

Dont pretent ur any better than anyone.STOP PATRONISING & BEING PRETENTIOUS.

  • @fIRsTRATmAN

First of all..I'm glad you stopped shouting at me..my ears were hurting.

I think, considering you have used FOUL, not fowl, language several times and I used it to you just once....

    I have been very tolerant.

Maybe I should have ignored your original comment, it just seemed to me that you were

( and apparently still are )wasting your time swearing at people who dislike the song, and you should just ignore them and enjoy it.

We're never going to agree, no need to reply again.

  • @theyorkshirewhites You get it all wrong mr smart ass. I was not swearing at people who dislike the song, I was swearing at those people in general who like gaga, riayanana, beiber and all the commercial crap thats on today. I used foul language at you several times because you used it to me first. Instead of swearing at me you should have read my initial comment, you would have realised what i was saying. You wuldnt act like this in real life so why do people like urself do it on the computer.

  • @fIRsTRATmAN Mark Knopfler will be no less wonderful just because 'they' don't understand and appreciate his music. We can just be happy to belong to those who can and do. And I don't think Mark would want us to hate and swear at those who dislike his music. It wouldn't change them and it would certainly do us bad. It is not a pleasant feeling to hate someone.

  • @faradyeva Chill out for God's sakes, no ones hating anyone. You sound like some old granny, stop being so pretentious and patronising.

  • Comment removed

  • @fIRsTRATmAN I answered you 2 days ago but somehow it didn't appear. Anyway, I don't think I'm pretentious or patronising, sorry if I sounded one, but I think we can agree in one thing that both of us love this music and we can feel sorry for those who don't. But that's their problem. However, if anyone can tell me what are the things that basically decide the kind of music someone likes I will be glad. I've been pondering over it all my life.

  • @faradyeva Im sure your not and I apologize for any misunderstandings. I wish you well and all the best with life. Well there are so many factors, but generally if someones an air head or dumb, lacking in brain cells then their choice of music tends to be that way too. Peace.

  • One of the best songs of MK. Mark talks about the shipyard of Alang in India which wasnt too far from where i lived in india. All the ships come there for breaking as its the largest ship breaking yard in the world. What a song, have a listen after you've been to Alang, it will touch you beyond words!

  • jest absolutnie genialny,mój mistrzu żyj wiecznie

  • #MusiMorning - НЕПОВТОРНИЙ МАРК НОФЛЕР - MARK KNOPFLER - So far from the Clyde !!!

  • pieknie pieknie

  • If I had ever worked on a ship that met this fate I would be really upset by this song.

  • MAGIC!!!!!

  • it's criminal that Mark gets 80k views and Eddie Vedder gets millions... Mark is a songwriting legend!

  • @OmriLahavComposer YES, it bothers me too, and bieber alike get 400mil (not kidding), but DIAMONDS ARE RARE!!!!!!!

  • absolutely gorgeous

  • einfach nur genial der mann!

  • killer =)

  • Unutterably beautiful. Symbolism unsurpassed when the ship's being "salvaged"; like a great whale being hacked up on the beach, as the lyrics suggest.

  • Gut wrenching....

  • God of Music = MK

  • awesome!!!

  • Look

    'ss germanic 1875'

    up on wiki.

Not directly relevant but poigniant nontheless.

  • FANTASTIC !!!!!

  • Absolutely Beautiful !!! And this is correct!!!!!!!!!!

  • Astounding material from possibly the best guitarist/song writer to emerge in the UK in 25 years. So nice to see him finally engaging with his roots in the North-east and Scotland. Beautiful.

  • superb !!!!

  • 4 people missed the "Like" button :P

  • @JPMOliveira Yes, it can only be some fatal mistake to click on dislike. Anyone with at least one ear must love this.......

  • from 0:00 till 6:45 AMAZING What a Legend

  • Pure poetry, with every word, every note.

  • "'Til it's only a stain on the sand." What a wonderfully sad but true line. A moving song. .

  • amazing , on of the greatest musican we have

  • I once played some blues with this bloke..it took us nearly 2 hours to realize who it was..he was there for the music not the fame..and he just played the back line till the end..he sang then left to silence;profound silence .a true muso

  • a wonderful haunting song mark at his very best, i wish he had played it at rah on june 4th, an awesome concert

  • amazing nothing more nothing less

  • I love how he finds new ways to surprise us. I think Get Lucky is a stronger album than KTGC. This is absolutely stirring.

  • Am going to MK gig this friday Glasgow, first time

Have noticed this song hasnt featured on previous setlists this tour, that said as he will physically be performing about 100 yards from the Clyde I sincerely hope he plays this!

  • @EKTed72

    i was there too!

  • which 4 so called music fans disliked this , must be the same ppl that listen to shit like lady gaga and n dubz . These same ppl have no taste in music.

  • Going to see Mark in Glasgow this Friday. Expect him to finish the main set with this and, hopefully, the encore with the theme from Local Hero. Can't wait!

  • Have to admit, all through his Dire Straits career I never knew Mark was born in Scotland. Now, at this late stage in his career his roots are showing. Great song.

  • I saw MK in Milwaukee. Probably my favorite Get Luky piece. He did not play this song. Thanks for the post

  • Semplicemente stupendo!!!!!

Adoro qst canzone....ha 1 qlks di speciale...........

Mark...6 sempre il migliore!!!! MK <3

  • If you like this stuff check out "Edmund Fitzgerald" song

  • Amazing to hear the melancholy of this song...but then again it is no happy moment when you find that your next job as captain will be to sail your ship half-way across the globe to have it beached. And it must be even worse to realise that in the end, the world doesn't care...

I like the comparison that Mark has made between the local pilot and a hangman, for that is precisely what he is. It doesn't matter if you wield an axe or a steering wheel, you will always be a murderer.

  • A fine dirge and unmistakably Scottish to me. The Fall of the Clyde and Scottish Industry and yet far more.

  • @pjane5 Still making ships on the Clyde...the rest of the "ladies from hell" are still making stuff..check out Billy Connelly

  • @dergrossen I will. It is good to know it is not all gone. "Edmund Fitzgerald" came to mind right away. We do our best to save horses from slaughter so this reminds me of what could have happened to my majestic Shire mare (many people call Shires Clydes here in the US) who at 5 is only beginning her life and will die of old age never to be hoisted and rendered while possibly still conscious. google imzadi the shire

  • @pjane5 yeah I will....the band is currently on tour..in Denver right now I think..well worth a visit if you can make it...the shows are often better than the recordings. Look up GET LUCKY tour with Mark Knopfler..sa far the folks are in raptures about this show. Today is April 20 2010 and a lot of you should be able to pick a venue near you IF any tickets are available.

  • Just beautiful..... wow.... thx for posting this and thx MK for writing it......

  • This song is also great, I love it

  • I love the allusions to the Passion (e.g., last supper, washes their hands). This is my favorite MK song - so beautiful.

  • The first three or four notes are so much like a song of his own from the princess bride sound track. Great song, a bit too sad to me now. I prefer Border Reiver and Piper to the End.

@ raithrover: it sound pretty much like a Les Paul but with knopfler... who knows... he has a great amount of guitars... it's believed taht he used to play an strat, but actually he plays also Gibsons, also his custom Shur Guitas, and some vintage models form the 60s

  • @ClyderSkyner There ear some ripper live versions of Piper to the end, Lucca in Italy . This one I converted to MP3 the sound is amazing. Border Reiver like wise, 2010 concert edition. There are so many subtle licks and fills by MK, I hear more every time I listen to it. Simply stunning from a genius. If you can't find either I'll send you the link or the MP3's, just let me know

  • a great song writer no matter what they say i love his simple way of writing that has a deep meaning in it , he writs in every day language

because most of his songs a bout every days life

    that's why he is great

  • absolutely great great song, remember me brothers in arms. AWESOME

  • einfach immer wieder super! this is music! Mark Knopfler is the best!!!

  • six minutes outside yourself. mark is awesome, as usual.

  • Brilliant guitar player and a very underestimated song writer. One of the few artist that can give me the chills though pure sound.

  • Tu m'a encore fait pleurer de bonheur mark, merci.

  • Mark Is My Life

  • Is it a Gibson Les Paul he's playing on this song? He normally plays a Strat. Great sound as usual though.

  • yes I think so :D

  • Just gorgeous

  • awesome!

  • sounds like good ole newfoundland music

  • an incredibly poignant song. amazing analogy of life on the clyde. a proud ship built by a proud people, both deserve more dignity in their twilight years.

mk has such a poetic majesty

  • just like other said

i get chills everytime I listen to this.

  • It's amazing how one man decade after decade still has the touch to write beautiful music.

  • He is a genius...Glad he came out with this album....

  • JUST BRILL WHAT MORE CAN BE SAID

  • this song is not coming out of my head!!!!

  • i get the chills from 0:00 till 6:00

    thats how great it is

  • I get chills long after 6:00. That's how amazing it is!

  • It is just a way to feel to come back to the roots of clyde...or his country ...to embrace the destiny...the age.

the song talk ...and keep feelings.

    Good work Mk.!!

  • this is pure beauty,,,,i wish he would have played this live,,,,,

  • yeah in Amsterdam 28 June 2010 im going

  • Magnifique chanson, qui ne laisse pas indifférent

    Merci.

  • Mark is in a league all of his own. One cannot compar his genius to anyone! He stand alone on the top of the mountain, writing in a more sophisticated way than anyone before him.

    Darius Taj

  • just...SUPER!!!

  • Great... Your a legend man !

  • The Clyde is actually the river that runs through Glasgow. Although it is well known that Mark Knopfler grew up in Newcastle in the north east of England he was actually born in Glasgow and stayed there till he was seven years of age. Just another small connection between M.K. And th Clyde.

  • bellissimo pezzo sel maestro Mark.....non vedo l'ora che arrivi il 9 luglio x poterlo vedere ed ascoltare in concerto a Padova.....ho già il biglietto

  • Not only does MK write better music than 99% of his contemporaries, but, with each new release, he broadens the scope of his subject matter. Honestly, who ELSE out there is going to write a gorgeous song about the dismantling of an old ship?
